But the difference is that Sunni are not attacking and killing Shias in India unlike the caste wars among the Hindus.

In UP - the highest population and the highest number of Muslims, Sunni's have a very rich history of attacking Shia's each year. It is similar in Madhya Pradesh - though not as much as the way it is in UP. BJP has shia vote locked in UP and MP.

Same in Kashmir.

That said, the long term goal of BJP and RSS is Hindu consolidation. And each year in India, as more people get educated and urbanized who don't consider caste as their defining identity(not saying irrelevant, but just not the central one), BJP gains new voters because BJP and Congress have been successful in making Hindus truly afraid of the systemic capture by Muslims.

Regardless of the divisive politics, I hope the SC does the right thing.

I don't think SC will give a defining judgement. They might just cop out and say it is upto the GoI to make laws and kick the ball to them. This way they save themselves from this controversial subject.

These are PR gimmicks to sow further sectarian feuds and break up the Muslim vote. Those who know the Indian Muslim community closely will tell you the same.

Also the women. Yes, they will be thankful for the empowerment. But they are not blind nor stupid. They will take their pound of flesh. What happens at the ballots may not be a quid pro quo. Remember, they will remain Muslims. Married to Muslims. Mothers and daughters and sisters of Muslims.

I think sunni women voting for BJP is a fantasy that will never come to pass. But I have seen a sizeable number of Shias in UP vote for BJP.

Doc, your analysis is shallow. And while making an assessment, we must never let our biases in.
There are two aspects to BJP locking the Shia vote. Not just one.
One is ofcourse that Shias have been victimized by Sunnis in 3 places - UP, MP and Kashmir. (There is more amity between them in other places).

The second is one of the most important - BJP is offering Shia leaders money and power. See under Congress, Sunnis in general monopolized everything that came by way of support to the Government (power, political positions and most importantly money by way of contracts). Congress in particular gave quite a bit to the hardliners(wahabi and deobandis) even in Sunnis. The Shias gained zilch.

Now, BJP is offering them all of that , that which they were denied for decades under Congress. And BJP is not giving a single penny to the Sunnis because they too know that Sunnis will never vote for them.

These two reasons put together is ensuring the Shia vote goes to BJP.

SC order states that if govt does not come up with a new law, their judgement staying it continues. So, in essence triple Talaq is banned until the time Govt makes a new law.
If it takes 100 years, the ban stays for 100 years.

It's pretty obvious what SC has said. It gave govt 6 months to come up with a new law. In case govt fails to come up with a new law due to delays, their stay on Triple Talaq holds until the time govt comes up with a law.

SC basically is telling the govt that it has 6 months to come up with a new law. If they don't, then the stay continues and the govt will have to explain to people why there is no law in place.

My point (labor I must ...) is that you cannot give someone 6 months, and then in the same ruling also allow them opportunity indefinitely to do something.

The latter nullifies and renders irrelevant then the former.

SC asked the government to legislate a new law within six months. Which means this issue is still alive politically and BJP will keep on milking it while opposition is in a fix whether to openly support the new law or oppose it to continue their minority appeasement.

Edit: now BJP will raise the issue of Halala and polygamy.

But equally it is a sword over the government's head. The ball has essentially been kicked by the Judiciary to the Legislative Executive.

What happens if the Opposition clamors for the government to pass it into Law without delay instead? Without delay or hesitation?
