Trapped by Tradition

Shatterpoint, u said it urself.. India is a massive country with massive population... Since we are a trapped tradition, people take more time to come out of it, and these days we are coming out of problems fast.. Already southern states have nearly eradicated them(but still exists in small %), and the northern states are getting developed faster now .. So when science meets tradition some ugly things turn out.. In next 15 years, when the older gen passes out, u can see a remarkable change in india...

Indeed Indian society is too diverse to make such generalising statements. Take my state for example, open love affairs among teenagers are becoming more and more normal thanks to media (especially Facebook and co). So if u take a fully literate and educated population together with the power of the media u can observe rapid changes in society. But whether this is good or bad is another question.

Thank you guys for having a intelligent discussion on this topic, I know that this is sensitive matter, but I also know that most Indians are open about their problems and will talk about it, look rape/sexual assaults happen all over the world and India is definitely not an exception to that rule.

I wonder if the majority of the population in India is aware of this, or it it so ingrained in society that it does not get noticed anymore? Is there a push for sex education in schools etc? I only ask because I do not know the ground realities in India, I am from a very different culture and country.

I know things are changing and India has a lot to deal with, but do you guys think that women's rights etc need to be up at the top of things to do for India and Indian society as a whole?

There's no on/off switch

I started this thread in the Indian forum because I want a serious discussion on this topic, I want Indian's perspectives on this and a lot of you Indian posters are intelligent people. Stuff like this needs to be talked about, I just find it extraordinary that this is allowed to happen and is tolerated by Indian society.

I know India is a huge country and things take time to change, I know the India is coming to grips with the 21st century and still has a lot of ancient traditions, I did not start this thread to put India down, I just want honest discussion on this topic.

First of all sex slavery or any kind of slavery is not allowed in our tradition yar n you may be seem to be thinking that its a part of tradition nut its not at all, there might be some other reason since i ud not see the video so cant tell u exactly ..... yes child marriages was/is in our traditions n allowed in some society.... but slowly slowly things are improving..... N most of indian from educated society condemns such things in the name of traditions.......

I can't believe that things like this are still tolerated in India, it also looks like sexual harassment of women in India is rife and tolerated and called "eve teasing" when in actual fact it is sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment/assault and rape of women in india is so prevelant across ALL of india that the United States Government had to issue a travel warning to women attempting to traveling to india.

U.S. citizens, particularly women, are cautioned not to travel alone in India. Western women, especially those of African descent, continue to report incidents of verbal and physical harassment by groups of men. Known locally as “Eve-teasing,” these incidents can be quite frightening. Eve-teasing can occur anytime or anywhere, but most frequently has happened in crowded areas such as in market places, train stations, buses, and public streets. The harassment can range from sexually suggestive or lewd comments, to catcalls, to outright groping. Southern India is very distinct from the other major cities and has a strong reputation for being very traditional. If you are a woman traveling in India, you are advised to respect local dress and customs. According to the latest figures by Indian authorities, rape is the fastest growing crime in India. Among large cities, Delhi experienced the highest number of crimes against women. Although most victims have been local residents, recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas underline the fact that foreign women are at risk and should exercise vigilance.

Women should observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions, restricting evening entertainment to well-known venues, and avoiding isolated areas when alone at any time of day. If you are a woman traveling in India, you are advised to respect conservative local dress and customs. Keep your hotel room number confidential and make sure hotel room doors have chains, deadlocks, and spy-holes. In addition, only hire reliable cars and drivers and avoid traveling alone in hired taxis, especially at night. Use taxis from hotels and pre-paid taxis at airports rather than hailing them on the street. If you encounter threatening situations, call “100” for police assistance.

In my research on India I have come across some very disturbing things, just found out that India is one of the largest sex/child/human trafficking countries in the world. There was also another documentary on child brides in India which along with Afghanistan is at the top of the list.

I can't believe that things like this are still tolerated in India, it also looks like sexual harassment of women in India is rife and tolerated and called "eve teasing" when in actual fact it is sexual harassment.

I want to get Indian posters perspective on this and how India can stamp out such stone age practices, it's quite shocking to see how rife this is in India, here are the links, to be honest I would not expect this from a country like India.

"About this episode

Acclaimed Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor invites the CNN Freedom Project to see what modern-day slavery looks like in his home country, India. This documentary chronicles Kapoor's trip to a remote village in North India where nearly all of the women have been sent into prostitution or sex slavery, often by male members of their own family or community. But thanks to work done by organizations like Plan India, the numbers of trafficking victims in this region are decreasing every month."

i agree to ur subject but before i reply i would like to clarify that i am not at all trying to defend but rather trying to educate so that the problem can be addressed better.

first when we speak of india being the country of the biggest amounts of poor ppl and this and that we need to bear in mind that india also is the second most populous country and while we compare we should make a sampling on victims/population ratio so that identification is proper and issue can be addressed better.

2ndly there should be very strict laws against human trafficking and there must be mutual understanding b/w several countries as it is often observed that a very large amount of the HT victims land up in foreign countries and unfortunately so called developed ones, so extradition of ppl found guilty should be done.

3rd is education, followed by employment opportunities for the poor.

AND FOREMOST THERE SHOULD BE A CHANGE OF HEART AMONG ALL OF US INDIANS THAT A GIRL IS INFERIOR TO THAT OF A BOY

These things used to happen even in he developed world on a large scale when they were poor and developing . These are just some social evils that come from living in a poor country where people lack awareness and politicians can get away with a lot . Howvever , rapid improvement is being made and the country is more aware now with the strong media and increasing literacy and education levels . At the end of the day India is still a poor , developing country so these things will take time to go away completely . What is important to see is whether progress is being made or not .

That does not mean women in poverty, in the villages, lower middle class have the same or equal rights, its a contradiction, India on one hand has women in power and leading the country, while on the other had you still hear about how badly women are treated, all you have to do is do a Google search and you will find tons on material.

Once again guys thank you for the great debate going on in here, it's good we can talk about this, this is one of the reasons I enjoying reading the post of Indians here, please ignore the Pakistani trolls, I don't want this thread getting derailed, because we are starting to have a good debate and many good points being raised.
