Trapped by Tradition

That does not mean women in poverty, in the villages, lower middle class have the same or equal rights, its a contradiction, India on one hand has women in power and leading the country, while on the other had you still hear about how badly women are treated, all you have to do is do a Google search and you will find tons on material.

Once again guys thank you for the great debate going on in here, it's good we can talk about this, this is one of the reasons I enjoying reading the post of Indians here, please ignore the Pakistani trolls, I don't want this thread getting derailed, because we are starting to have a good debate and many good points being raised.

well, having two extremes is nothing special in India, but again, you cant apply all this for all of India. Perhaps it isnt easy for a foreigner to see the different culteres and lifestyles in India, like it isnt easy for an Indian to see the difference between different european countries, although they have much more in common than some sates here in India.

first of all these Sex trafficking , women rights violations , has nothing to do with our tradition ....
but these things are happening in our country , we do not have any hesitation for accepting these facts.... [ like our neighbours do]...
but point here is .. things are improving and hopefully those radicals behind these activities will be kicked out from our community

What or how do you guys think would be the best way? Education? Better policing of laws and harsher sentences? I am learning a lot about India, and my respect for your country has grown the more I have learnt, a lot of things have shocked me as well, but reading and seeing how openly and honestly your guys are talking about only gives me hope that India is indeed moving in the right direction, thank you guys once again, for debating with me in a intelligent manner.

hmm only with education wont resolve these issues.... ,

let me tell you basic fact .....

1: if children are kidnapped in a city from railway station or pilgrim centres or any other crowded place [these are the places criminals is targetting ..]

2:with in hour the child will move to a safe location controlled by goons and , getting of the child is absolutely difficult after this

3:if the child is boy he will be used for begging and for female she will be mainly used as sex worker....

my point is , all these are not a independent crimes , there is clearly a strong mafia working with strong connection with our corrupted bureaucrats in each city....

so our govt and law and order system should show some courage to wipe out these activities from this soil.......

Do you think that the general public could be used by the police? Like a warning system, if the public see something strange and suspicious? Can civil society step in and help?

India is always on the move and always busy, so how do these goons kidnap the kids in broad daylight with so many eyes around?

first of all nobody care about another.... it is a basic fact.. [Especially in metros] , and there is always public can contact police... but it is not getting much effective because our police to population ratio is very very less , and our police force also equally affected by corruption , so civilians are need to give bribe for start even the investigation.......

But can this be changed? Can the police be made effective with proper training from police forces around the world? India has friends allover the world and surely the government can ask police from other nations to help train their police forces?

dude.. it is not about training .....their hands are tied up by some one else....

see i am not trying to point my finger against anyone...... , a country will have the same character of its own citizens....
same way our country has problem because of ourselves... we ourselves all the citizens need to change......

when it comes to corruption , we all trying to point our fingers agains politicians which none other than citizens of this country which we selected ..... so it is actually pointing to ourselves...

when somebody jumps the signal in traffic , we tried to give bribe and trying to escape rather than paying the fine to goverment... in this cas we ourselves encouraging the policemen to take bribe....

same way in all places in order to save time or some amount of money , all the citizens are fall under corruption....

So you are saying that corruption needs to be stopped from the ground up? You might have a point, do you think corruption is ingrained into Indian society?

Exactly.. i has to be cleared from the root level...... , corruption is like a common factor in our society.....

Getting passport is a right for all the indian born citizens... but we most of all will be giving some money to policeman who coming for investigation... but no one is consider this as courrption or something it is now more or like a tradition..... problem here is no one wants to mess with buerocrats.... every one wants to move on with their life with out puting their head in to any troubles......

Sexual harassment/assault and rape of women in india is so prevelant across ALL of india that the United States Government had to issue a travel warning to women attempting to traveling to india.

India

Disgusting!!!!!!!!!

Thats not true... Few states like Delhi,UP,MP, Rajasthan, Haryana & Maharashtra records highest crime overall n same with crime against women .... Anyway I say Delhi is not just capital but its Crime capital too...... East & Southern parts have less crime.....

Do you think this can be changed? The mindset of the ordinary citizen? If it is so deeply rooted then how does India change? How does India take it to the next level and stamp out corruption?

The first step to change the mind of the ordinary people is to have a good role model, in this case a honest and charismatic political leader
Our free press and media might remind us from corruption but I dont think that this alone will lead to a general change in behaviour considering corruption.

^^ But does India have a strong young leaders? India is the youngest country on Earth, yet the politicians are decades past their use by date? Old and mired in the past, why don't the young kids in India want to lead the country from the front?
