Since the mysterious disappearance of Habib Zahir has become a major issue, this correspondent was sent to Nepal by the Pakistan Today management to probe into Zahir’s disappearance, who went missing after arriving Nepal on April 6.
Visits to Kathmandu, and Lumbini from where Habib Zahir was abducted have led to startling revelations which suggest that the last signals from Zahir’s cellular phone were received at a tower beside Maya Devi Temple, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
The Nepalese officials remain tight-lipped over the ongoing investigations to trace the whereabouts of the missing Pakistani national who had been invited for a job interview in Lumbini, in the Southern part of Nepal, which borders Indian Province of Uttar Pradesh.
Despite repeated requests with the officials of Nepal, no official was available for on the record comments.
Nepal terms the mysterious disappearance of Habib Zahir as a classic case of entrapment and abduction by sleuths of the neighbouring India.
According to interviews and investigations conducted, Zahir was received by an Indian national Dolly Ranchel at Gautama Buddha Airport on April 6. Later, the duo left the airport at around 1:45 pm in a white Suzuki car without a Nepalese number-plate. The last signal received from Habib Zahir’s cellular phone was at the tower near Maya Devi Temple (Gautama Budha’s birthplace) at 2:45 pm.
Unlike his other colleagues, who were based in Nepal and were a part of the network, Dolly had arrived at Lumbini on April 4 from India.
The footages of CCTV cameras have proved that Lt Col (r) Habib Zahir had arrived Kathmandu on an Oman Air flight, and he arrived at the Lumbini Airport on the same day. But there are no traces to be found afterwards.
According to the officials, Habib Zahir was not in the Nepalese territory anymore as he had been abducted by the intelligence agencies of India. Gautama Buddha Airport falls in Bhairahawa municipality of Rupendehi district where Zahir was seen last time.
A visit to all the relevant places in Bhairahawa revealed to this scribe that Kalidaha border crossing is the closest passage from Maya Devi Temple where last signals of Zahir’s phone were picked. The border crossing, only seven kilometres away from the Maya Devi Temple, also has a police picket, which, according to natives, is used by smugglers and human traffickers who smuggle Nepalese women into India for the sex trade. There is a strong possibility that Habib Zahir was smuggled into India near this border crossing.
The border along Kalidaha border crossing is also used by Indian terrorists linked to various Terai mafia groups who have full backing from the Indian border force, Shastra Sema Bal (SSB).
There are total 24 districts in Southern plains of Nepal bordering India having 22 border crossings with India. Nepal, India border is porous and it has many illegal and informal entry and exit points which are (mis)used for human trafficking, smuggling and trade.
Pakistan Today also visited a neighbouring Sanoli border crossing, another border between India and Nepal, which is only 35 kilometres away from the Kalidaha border.
A visit to Sanoli crossing, which is only five kilometres away from the Gautama Buddha Airport, revealed the fact that vehicles and humans were crossing the post without any random checking. During the stay of this scribe at the post for around half an hour, not a single person was asked to show legal documents and nor any of the vehicles were searched by guards.
“Despite being a legal border, it looks like a bridge which anyone can pass without any checks,” said Mona Khan, the reporter accompanying Pakistan Today.
The Nepalese investigators believe that Indian sleuths have abducted Habib Zahir but the Nepalese government is unable to take up the matter with India which treats Nepal as its province.
