The protesting traders on Monday gave a three-day ultimatum to Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to fulfil their demands; otherwise, they will go on a countrywide shutter-down and wheel-jam strike. The countrywide traders' convention, organised by Markazi Tanzeem-e-Tajiraan Pakistan [central traders' organisation of Pakistan], criticised the government's economic policies and the FBR's documentation measures.

The traders who had arrived from across the country demanded the government to review the condition of seeking the computerised national identity card (CNIC) numbers of unregistered buyers and sales tax registration. Instead, they favoured the policy of fixed tax scheme for the traders.

After the daylong convention here at a local hotel, the traders held a protest rally under the leadership of Kashif Chaudhry, President central traders' organisation of Pakistan and its chairman Khawaja Suleman Siqqiqui from Melody Market to NADRA Chowk.

The traders were intending to lead the protest demonstration towards the FBR House, but they were stopped at the NADRA Chowk by the law enforcement agencies where the FBR representatives held dialogue with the traders' leadership.

Addressing the protesters, the traders' representatives urged Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa to intervene in getting their demands fulfilled. They also alleged that the government, at the behest of International Monetary Fund (IMF), is undertaking measures which, they said, are 'unjustified'.

After the dialogue, Kashif Chaudhry told the protesting traders that the FBR has sought three days to consider their demands. "This should be taken as ultimatum, and if the FBR fails to fulfil our demands, we will be forced to give a call of the countrywide shutter-down and wheel-jam strike," Chaudhry said.

He alleged that the FBR is not taking the demands of the traders seriously. "We are not against the dialogue, but the time should not be wasted in the name of dialogue," he added. He further alleged that FBR has failed to convince the traders on the condition of seeking the CNIC numbers of unregistered buyers. He further said that the government continues to issuing notices at the markets instead of preventing the smuggling at the ports and borders.

Chaudhry maintained that industries in the country are being closed down and purchasing at markets has reduced up to 40 percent; rather these are presenting a deserted look due to the 'failed' economic policies and the FBR's documentation measures.

"We have decided to approach the traders across the country, as we believe that the ongoing economic policies have already led to unemployment and decline in business, while it is feared that the situation could lead to chaos," he added.

Addressing the protesting traders, Khalid Mehmood Qureshi, President Traders Association of Multan, urged the Army Chief to intervene, adding that at the behest of the IMF, the government is taking such measures which would result in further decline in the overall economy and businesses in the country.

Let them strike - the elections are in 4 years, lets see if they can strike for all 4 years. They have bills to pay, they have staff who rely on wages, they have customers who want to buy. What happened at the last strike? Nobody even noticed.

Fixed tax is an excuse for their to get away with cooking the books, making huge profits and not paying their fair share.

No compromise should be made on this. This haram khori is the reason Pakistan is in this mess today. If they want to go on strike let them be. Lets see how long can they survive with business shut. In fact Pakistan Nation needs to boycott these thieves. Paying taxes isnt the job of salaried class only.

Exactly. Salaried class has no option but to pay tax. Everyone including the dirt poor have no options other than to pay indirect taxes (VAT, fuel tax etc). These guys think they are special because they have a bit of money in their pocket.

70 yrs old habits will take time to go away.

These people are used to paying bribe and bakshish which is peanuts compared to their due share to the tax dept and country.. Over time they have all grown and amassed wealth while the country has been ruined and plundered by leaders who are themselves like them i.e. Looters, squanderers and fraudsters.

How can they demand fixed tax.. Thats like goes only in their favor.. E.g 100 people own and run a shop selling clothes... How can we charge them tax under 1, 2 or 3 head counts. How will the smaller traders or new enterants compete with the already established players.

Their demand is thus not just, not for the best interest of the country but serves only themselves.

.
Ask them to pay taxes, and they start their usual Randi rona .. Shame of these Traders, bas haramkhoro se chori karwa lo , aur harami usi chorae hue paison se Hajj kerte hai ..

We need to blockchain PKR as a currency (with prerequisite investment in teleco for country wide mobile wallet access among investment in other tech) and go digital for all PKR 500 and above notes.

This qoum of ours is only interested in short cuts and can only be straightened with a danda.

How can we upgrade the infrastructure and alleviate poverty if no one is willing to pay taxes.

Everyone pays indirect taxes but only salarymen pay the direct income tax fully.

If we can improve direct tax collection then we can reduce indirect taxes on the general populace.

However, these arthi walas want to divert their direct tax share on others and then ask ke "mulak ke halaat tabdeel nahi ho rahe".

Taxes are a matter of life or death for nation

All these mafias are anti Pakistan , as they continue to promote a state within a state

World wide any trader who refuses to pay tax their businesses are shut down , accounts closed and owner jailed

Not only that the Business door has a government letter posted on it that Government has shut down this Business for Tax Theft

. .
Can We Organize A Large Scale Nationwide Protest Against This Mafia Through Social Media????

Good idea, these haraam Khor businesses take taxes from you, when you buy one of their products but never pass on the taxes to the government.

.
Put a Lock on their business and confiscate and auction their belongings that should fix people from not paying taxes

LAHORE: All factions of trader organisations have got united and announced a two-day shutter-down strike on Oct 29-30 following the “disappointing attitude of the government officials including those from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to address their demands about imposition of new taxes and laws through the Finance Act 2019-20”.

Traders representatives have announced there will be no more talks with the government unless it withdraws the condition of collecting copy of consumer’s computerised national identity card (CNIC) if shopping is worth Rs50,000 and above and its submission to the FBR for record.

The strike call was given by All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran (APAT) and Pakistan Traders Alliance (PTA) at two separate press conferences here on Thursday. The two bodies showed their full power and unity by calling a large number of trader leaders from over 50 markets to announce the shutter-down strike for October 29-30 (Tuesday, Wednesday).

Previously, a small faction of traders believed that the government and FBR should be given some time to address their grievances. However, despite two-month long talks with different FBR and other government officials as well as the elected representatives and ministers, the issues remained unresolved. APAT Naeem Mir Group Secretary General Malik Kaleem, along with President Waqar Mian, and representatives Mian Khalil, Chaudhry Amjad, Malik Khalid, Imran Bashir, said all rounds of talks with the officials remained inconclusive as the FBR was not in a mood to address their issues. The APAT had also held a “long march” on Oct 9 on Islamabad from across Pakistan, but the government did not pay any heed to their demands.

Malik Kaleem said APAT Central Secretary General Naeem Mir was in Karachi these days to make arrangements for the strike in the financial capital of Pakistan. He said the strike call could only be taken back if the government accepted their demands. He said traders had no political agenda, and they were only pressing for their just demands.

Meanwhile, PTA President Muhammad Ali Mian, along with Ashraf Bhatti, Khalid Pervaiz, Mujhaid Maqsood Butt, Mehboob Ali Sirki, Abdul Razzaq Babar, Haji Haneef, Asim Magoon, Khwaja Ijaz and others, said traders had presented a charter of demands to the FBR, but it was ignored. He said the condition of collecting the CNIC copy from customers was suspended for only two months. He alleged that the government was non-serious about economic revival and welfare of the general public. He also made it clear that there was no political agenda behind their strike call and they wanted only welfare of traders and revival of the economic activities. He said he was ready for talks with serious government officials to resolve the issue.
