ASELSAN climbed 4 places this year to enter the Defense Top 100 list from 48th place. Thus, the goal of being in the top 50 was realized. Despite all the negativities and uncertainties caused by the corona virus (COVID-19) epidemic on a global scale, ASELSAN was one of the first 4 companies whose market value was least affected in this process in the Defense News Top 100 companies.

TAI, which was included in the list in the previous year, has risen 16 steps this year and ranked 53rd. TAI is now very close to being among the top 50 companies in the world. BMC dropped 4 places to 89, Roketsan decreased 2 places to 91, and STM decreased 7 places to 92nd place on the list.

While 5 Turkish defense industry companies were on the list in the previous year, 2 more new Turkish companies were able to take place this year. This year, FNSS Savunma Sistemleri A.Ş managed to enter the list from the 98th place. HAVELSAN, the other Turkish defense industry company that entered the list from 99th place.

Thus, seven Turkish companies were included in the top 100 list, which includes the world's most prestigious defense companies. This total number is expected to inevitably increase in the projection of the next 10 years, if other companies that fail to make it into the list with small differences are taken into account.

Goodspeed!

Inshallah, next goal is to have a Turkish company in top 30 in next 5 years. Turkey can tap massive potential markets like Pakistan, Qatar, Malaysia, Algeria, Iraq, and Indonesia even (to name a few). If Arabs stop losing their marbles, GCC can also open up for Turkish defense products in the future IA. So the potential is huge.

Turkey has two major challenges to overcome: One is reliable and competitive engine technologies for its weapon systems and the second is competitive electro-magnetic suites for its weapons especially fighter jets, radars, Jamming Crafts etc.

By competitive, I mean competitive with cutting edge Western systems...and that might prove to be even harder than the engine technologies. Wishing nothing but the best though!

.
Good for Turkey

However, I should point a few things here. Firstly, the companies are ranked by 2019 revenues, which means it has almost nothing to do with the pandemic of 2020. And I believe some companies use a financial year of 2019-2020. Secondly, I believe a number of companies making revenues from defence contracts may be misleading. For instance, Germany has only 3 companies (4, if you count in KNDS) and Israel also only has 3 listed companes. I don't believe neither one of those countries isn't competitive in the world's defence market simply for fewer companies have a head office in their countries. Overall, it is a good result for Turkey.

This is all a matter of process.

Turkey has gained great experience after 1974. I do not want to go into much detail, but the foundations of a strong national defense industry were laid after the Cyprus peace operation.

In 1983, it became the first country in NATO to initiate an independent defense planning process other than the French. Even the EU has just started this process through PESCO. This process played a major role in the institutionalization of the Turkish defense industry.

In fact, everything you see today has a 40-year background.

Defense planning, which started in 1983, continued to strengthen its infrastructure until the 2000s. In 2004, a new process was initiated by showing political will. In 2004 Defense Industry Executive Board decisions, allmost all foreign-ready system purchases were stopped and domestic main system projects were initiated.

Turkey's political will in this sense, has brought some covert embargo activities by so-called allies. Turkey's access to many critical subsystems denied in this period. These implicit embargo activities were tried to be used as a leverage to direct Turkish foreign policy.

This situation triggered the 3rd phase in Turkish defense industry planning: vertical specialization. Today, more than 90% of approximately 700 projects carried out under the Presidency of Defense Industry are related to subsystems which includes microcomponents / materials / electronics and related technologies. Each of the above-mentioned main companies has grown into huge ecosystems surrounded by hundreds of subcontractors and universities.

The Turkish defense industry, which stands out on the basis of main systems in the 2010-2020 period, will come to the fore with subsystem supplies in the next 10 years.

The biggest obstacle to the Turkish defense industry is that the situation it has come need more than, TAF's needs. Therefore, it has to provide access to new supply networks, strategic alliances and markets.

This title was moved without any excuse.

Is Defense News a local magazine? No, it is the world's most respected organization in its field. Is the Turkish defense industry a local supplier? No, it exports to 4 continents.

So Why? I do not know, may be because of some positive information about Turkey.

Now let's look at some of recently opened topics on the first page of the World Affairs section:

Ertugrul - a Turkish drama has gained popularity world wide - specially Pakistan

Tesla No Longer Even A Growth Company; Going Bankrupt

China and The Future of Technology

No Longer Leader of the Free World: Trump Admin. Humiliated at UN over Iran Arms Embargo(by chinese member)

Harboring illegal separatists may add obstacles to China-UK ties: ambassador

Turkey threatens Biden, tells US it will “pay price” for criticism

Australia needs Trump to win the election because 'we cannot face China alone'

Debt-trap diplomacy: PNG wants Huawei loan cancelled

Chinese stocks lead gains regionally; Japan’s economy shrank 27.8%

Australian diplomat urges restraint in deadly border spat between India and China

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan: A partnership too important to fail

Facebook refused to check hate speech by India's BJP fearing business fallout: WSJ report

Academic Ranking of World Universities 2020 (ShanghaiRanking)

Countries where land and environmental activists are killed the most (2019)

Chinese yuan is best major currency bet, In each and every category of fundamentals, China beats US

Australia's defence industry needs to triple output to keep up with arms race

Large population decline expected in China and India

Featured Congress has secretly blocked US arms sales to Turkey for nearly two years

For the first time, The Fortune Global 500 is now more Chinese than American

China leads peers in 5G investments, half of worldwide investment from the country

Income Tax raid finds money laundering worth ₹1,000 crore by Chinese firms

On this occasion, I am sharing with the forum for the last time what kind of systematic retrenchment applying against us. From now on, PDF reputation rapidly decrease in Turkish communities, but I hope the PDF board will be able to see the corruption in them one day, without us.

What do you mean it was moved? As in relocated from World Affairs to Turkish Defence Forum?

I don’t know who moved it, but in general we prefer to keep military related stuff in their respective sections. Ertugrul, Tesla etc are not military topics so that’s probably why they were left in world affairs.

So all Pakistan military or Defence related threads should be in the relevant Pakistani military section, not the World Affairs section.

All Turkish Defence and military related topics should be in the Turkish Defence section, unless discussing something that involves other countries, like sales to Pakistan etc.

This has been the policy since the respective military sections were created. Trying to suggest that someone moved the thread because of ‘not wanting anything positive about Turkey’ or ‘systemic discrimination’ is just absurd.

I doubt it. Even Elbit System and Rheinmetall AG have failed to crack into top 30. Here is a list of companies that failed to make top 20 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Naval Group, Honeywell, Dassault, Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation. They are all reputable major defence contractors with a diverse porfolio with backing of their government with much larger budgets than Turkey. It is always great to be ambitious and dream big, but realistically, no, I don't think both Aselsan and TAI of entering into Top 20.

Thank you for your information. However, it's not so convincing as you are comparing Aselsan and TAI with the world's leaders in the defence industry such as Honeywell (their total revenue is more than $40 billions, if it was a Turkish company, it would have been the number one Turkish firm in terms of revenue by beating Koc Holding by a wide margin), GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce and they will dominate the industry in any foreseabale future.

For instance, TAI is rumored to use GE Aviation F110 engine for TF-X (and I still doubt the US congress & GE Aviation actually greenlighted this 'sale' as there is no confirmation from the US). Both Aselsan and TAI will constinue to do business with those international companies and contribute to their revenues. They will continue to grow and invest in technologies and engineering as they are backed by much bigger countries with larger budget.

Again, I am glad that Turkey is ambitous, but please, be realistic. You can list whatever projects, but you should be mindful that any of them could flop like Altay and I don't think those projects would help Aselsan or Tai to overtake likes of Dassault (which is a main contractor of FCAS and many other European projects), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce.

Most of the Turkish defense project are either joint ventures with foreign nations or copied from foreign designs like Altay which is actually a south Korean K-2 Black Panther, but @MMM-E wont understand
