Russia has a couple of serious disadvantages compared to cold war days. One is the lack of a unique ideology. Russia could not come up with its own civilizational ideology in order to be able to live as an independent state from West. This ideology could be anything. The other disadvantage is the disastrous low in which Russian science and technology sank after the break up of Soviet Union. In 1990's, it looked as if Russia was hellbent to go from a major science producer to a third world state. Then follows from this, the lack of marketing for whatever technological products Russia had on its hands. There was no effort to offer these to nations who were willing to buy. For instance Iran was interested to buy the production lines of Tu-204/IL96 at a hefty price, which could have allowed Russia to finance R&D for next generation of airliners. But Russia outright refused. Instead choosing to import Western planes for its domestic market.

No it is not collapsing. It is in a recession and not as severe as one that Germany faced in 2009.

The hundreds of billions of dollars that Russia has in reserve will be used to cushion the Russian economy, while the government adjusts to lower oil prices over the longer term.

This is actually a great opportunity for Russia to make the necessary economic reforms to re-balance its economy away from oil and gas.

Russia is suffering pain but this is not a death blow to it's economy.
