BRUSSELS/GENEVA – Three million migrants are expected to arrive in Europe by 2017 as they flee war and poverty in Syria and other conflict zones, with a small positive impact on the EU economy likely, the EU’s executive arm said on Thursday.

“Overall, an additional 3 million persons is assumed to arrive in the EU over the forecast period,” the European Commission’s economic forecast for 2015-2017 said.

It predicted that there would be 1 million arrivals in total during 2015, 1.5 million in 2016 and half a million in 2017, adding that it would represent an increase in the EU’s population of around 0.4 percent once unsuccessful asylum applications were taken into account.

European Union Economic Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said that the migrants could help boost the EU economy, helping the moderate recovery predicted in the eurozone during that period.

“There will be an impact on growth that is weak but positive for the EU as a whole, and that will increase GDP (gross domestic product) by 0.2 to 0.3 percent by 2017,” Moscovici said.

“That will combat a certain number of received ideas and backs the politics of President (Jean-Claude Juncker),” who has pushed for the EU to do more to help migrants, Moscovici added.

Meanwhile, the U.N. said refugees and migrants are likely to continue to arrive in Europe at a rate of up to 5,000 per day via Turkey this winter, and appealed for more funds to avert tragedy in Greece and the Balkans in coming months.

More than 760,000 people have already crossed the Mediterranean so far this year, mainly to Greece and Italy, after fleeing wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as conflicts in Eritrea and other parts of Africa.

“Harsh weather conditions in the region are likely to exacerbate the suffering of the thousands of refugees and migrants landing in Greece and traveling through the Balkans, and may result in further loss of life if adequate measures are not taken urgently,” the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said.

“UNHCR’s new winter plan anticipates that there could be up to 5,000 arrivals per day from Turkey between November 2015 and February 2016,” it said.

The agency is seeking an additional $96.15 million to support Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia and the former Republic of Macedonia, bringing the total amount that it is trying to raise for Europe’s refugee crisis to $172.7 million.

The fresh funds will be used to upgrade shelter and reception facilities for winter conditions, and to supply family tents and housing units equipped with heating, the statement said. Sanitation and water supply systems will also be improved.

“Winter clothing and blankets, as well as other essential items for protecting people from the elements, will be included in the aid packages to be distributed to individuals with specific needs,” it said.

More children are joining the ranks of refugees streaming into Europe, with some families taking a new route from Turkey to Bulgaria to avoid crossing rough seas to Greece as winter sets in, the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Wednesday.

Now i see how hard it has been for Turkey in controlling these threats. What EUROPE needs to do is to increase support for Turkey in addressing this humanitarian issue and to support Turkey's bastion in fighting these DAESH threat.

It is in their hands now so I don't think closing the borders, would solve their problem.

I have also been following Iranians living in Japan who have been posting in Japanese social media about the issue of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, Qatar in their influence of radicalization and monetary donations to suspected terror cells. Clearly we should RE-consider security cooperation with some 5th column states. An address and consideration of cooperation with Iran should be considered. It is apparent that it is not Shia who are conducting such attacks, but are Wahabists.

I personally don't care at the moment :meeting: lol

Iran and those states, are almost enemies.
Follow some Arabs and hear the same claims about Iranians and Shiite terror cells working within their countries.

I have. Extensively, actually. The issue I have with the GCC is the amount of private citizen activity and donations to known DAESH activity. There has to be a clerical reformation in KSA as the clerics in the Kingdom are preaching jihad and violence against the West as well. This does not, ultimately, help in regards to moderation and anti-radicalization processes.

Its easy to say close the borders but the reality looks different.
Whats even more hilarious is that EU would probably condemn Turkey if it actually closed the borders to Refugees.

What the Turks need to do is ultimately open a front line in Northern Syria. Collaboration with the Peshmerga is in my view an eventuality and territorial issues can be dealt with later on after Syria an Iraq has been retaken. Governmental processes can be ironed out then. Provided ultimate victory is ascertained.

First we must eviscerate the vermin. Then we can talk of the spoils of war.

You're not up to date with the events in this part of the world. Turkey isn't fighting the Daesh. Never has. It's more like "the enemy of my enemy (Kurds, Assad) is my friend (or to be ignored for now)". The Daesh are also pretty much ignoring Turkey.

The only way to have Turkey fight the Daesh if to provide concessions in Syria for Turkey, concessions that aren't feasible as they would further destabilize the region (as neither Iran nor SA will be happy about it) and antagonize Russia.

I can't speak on their behalf, @Full Moon @Saif al-Arab @JUBA

That is exactly what I meant about the need of leadership in Brussels and Germany. We are witnessing, my friend, a paradigm shift, real time.

Why not?

I also support closing the borders or atleast controlling and selecting the right refugees to come to europe.
Pros for closing the borders and it will work:
1. Less Refugees will start planing and actually start moving to europe.
2. If Europe is closed, they will try to go to turkey, egypt, emirate.
3. ban illegal, unregistered refugees, transfer them back to their homeland or build a mass "unknown, unregistered"-refugee-camp (tents with fences and watched) where they can stay until they tell their homeland.
4. Defend fenced border with military. If they start revolting, use advanced counter measure (tear gas, water canon, rubber bullet)

but dont think this is fair, because everyone who fled from their homeland from life danger should get a chance:
1. Only selected refugees, true refugees. Excludes for example: Afghani, Iraqi, Balkan people and those who was in a safe country before they enter europe like turkey.
2. Also exclude trouble makers like extremist and who doesnt accept or dislike european values (tolerate other religion and people of the religion).
3. Exclude and send back those who does crime, any crime!
4. No unnecessary complaints, and no compromises. If they dont like to live in ireland, rumania, or in a small village or even in the forest, their second and last option is go back home.

We can talk about fighting isis with you when you share a 900km border with Syria, lets see who is gonna play the hero first.

My friend, clearly there needs to be more military and economic support for Turkey. There has to be a greater NATO participation in this paradigm. I would say that this crisis is all due to European habituation of reliance on others instead of proactively soling the issue. One cannot be just reactive.

That isn't true.
Prove what you are saying and better not some news reports, articles or bullshit you individually believe in. I don't have time for it.
