Report: Syria deploys anti-aircraft missile batteries along Turkish border​

Syria deployed anti-aircraft missile batteries along the Turkish border in what seems to be a response to an incident last week when a Turkish fighter jet shot down a Syrian plane, a Kuwaiti newspaper reported.

Syria deployed the anti-aircraft weapons and “is ready to deal with any hostile Turkish plane that enters Syria’s airspace,” sources from the Syrian army and Hezbollah told Al-Rai on Monday.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Minister of Information, Omran al-Zoubi, criticized Turkey in an interview on Syrian TV Sunday evening, saying that the country is facilitating the continual entry of armed terrorist groups into the Kassab area in Latakia, the Syrian Arab News Agency SANA reported on Monday.

Latakia is a stronghold of Bashar Assad’s regime.

Zoubi accused some Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey of backing terrorism.

Syrian air defense systems have "harassed" Turkish F-16 fighter jets patrolling their own airspace by repeatedly putting them under "radar lock", suggesting they were about to be fired at, the Turkish military said on Thursday.

The incident, which took place on Wednesday, comes only days after Turkey downed a Syrian warplane that Ankara said had violated its airspace, in an area where Syrian rebels have been battling President Bashar Assad's forces.

I did some reading from VICE. The ISIL were mocking the Western's accusation against Turkey opening borders. I'll quote some of the important parts which ISIL members post on social site.

The Atmeh internet café crops up frequently in social media posts, and indicates the relative normality of jihadist life far from the frontlines. In a clear recruiting drive, British fighters frequently refer to Syria’s “5 Star jihad” and urge their compatriots at home to join them while they still can.

One British Facebook account mocks the travel warning given by the police to those suspected of planning to travel to Syria:

“What the police give to those whom they think might be travelling to Syria lool they gimme joke!!... It means right now they can't really do squat... Hence the word "interest" lol.”

The same account then mocks the ease with which foreign jihadists can cross the Turkish border into Syria

“Who thinks they can jump that???... Subhan'ALLAH... 1 hour flight from Istanbul, 30min drive from hatai and bing bang boom ur in!!”

Story how Turkish army approached them.

Another British jihadist tumblr account states that Turkish border guards facilitated their illegal entry into Syria, despite Turkey’s recent denials of support for jihadist groups (the bracketed notes are his own):

“a huge army vehicle from the Turkish army appeared from the border we were about to cross. On top of it was a machine gun with a soldier in control of it and two more men inside. A few of the brothers thought this was it, that we were going to attain martyrdom or be arrested, strangely enough my heart felt at ease and content. They commanded us to get out of the car and asked us to open our luggage. They asked us were we jaysh al-hur [Free Syrian Army] but we replied no we are here for sadaqah and we weren’t lying as we had no intentions of being anything to do with jaysh al-hur (free Syrian army) as many among them are murtadūn (apostates).

The commander was debating between whether to send us back or let us through the border but as soon as our driver told them we was British, they smiled and were inspired by our presence. The sad thing was to see they had love for the deen (religion/straight path) but they had sworn allegiance to the tawagheet (tyrant rulers). After searching our luggage and taking a pair of our gloves as a gift (they gave us no choice) they let us go on our way. Our happiness wasnt hidden, it gleamed from our faces so much that it brought smiles to theirs but they made the vehicle we were in turn around and leave, leaving us to travel through the border on foot.”

This part is interesting.

Such a distinctive location can easily be tracked down via satellite imagery, which suggests that the jihadists either have a very poor sense of information security or absolutely no fear of being bombed by the regime or monitored by Western intelligence services.

Recent reports indicate that, stung by Western criticism, the Turkish government has increasingly begun to restrict access to Syria for foreign jihadists, which means that the best days of the "5 Star jihad" may already be over.

Despite this, the calls for fresh recruits make the place sound about as tempting as a gig joining in in Syria's carnage could ever sound:

“To the brothers: What are you waiting for? There are plenty of weapons here waiting for you to come and play with them. Plenty of food as a sheep gets slaughtered regularly depending on how many brothers are around, there are plenty of women here waiting to get married waiting to bare the offspring of the army of Imam Mehdi by the will of Allah and there is honour for the Muslims here.

"To the sisters: What are you waiting for? Your husbands clothes need washing! (I’m joking) but seriously what are you waiting for? You may wear your veils without being harassed, no woman is harmed here and if she is there is a harsh penalty as the woman’s honour is not to be tampered with whatsoever, there are plenty of mujahideen desiring to get married who have some of the most loving and softest characters I have ever witnessed even though they are lions in the battlefield, there are orphans here waiting for mothers to love them the way their parents would have. Come to the land of honour. You are needed here.

"We don’t just need men and money. We need communities. We are building the Islamic state. Join us as it is becoming extremely difficult to enter through the borders.”

Turkey returns artillery fire into Syria​

ANKARA: Turkey on Friday fired artillery into Syria to retaliate after cross-border shelling hit its territory without causing injuries or damage, the army said.

"Six shells hit in Yayladadi in Hatay province and caused no damage," said the Turkish armed forces in a statement.

"In accordance with the rules of engagement, Turkish artillery shelled the area where the fire originated."

Turkey, a staunch opponent of the Damascus regime, hosts about 800,000 refugees from the three-year-old Syrian conflict, many of them in camps along the border.

Turkish armed forces stationed along the Syria border often retaliate when munitions from fighting there hit its territory.

On March 23 Turkish F-16 aircraft shot down a Syrian fighter jet for a breach of Turkish airspace.

Turkey toughened its rules of engagement after one of its jets was downed by the Syrian air force in June 2012. Ankara warned that any military approach of the border from Syria would be seen as a threat.

Army captain arrested for illegal MIT truck raid | Investigations | Daily Sabah

ADANA, Turkey — A Turkish army captain has been arrested on Thursday as part of an investigation into an illegal search of trucks belonging to the country's MIT intelligence agency in January.

The captain identified only by the initials H.G. and another active soldier were held on Wednesday in Ankara, their place of duty, before being transferred to the southern city of Adana, where the incident on January 19 took place.

A court in Adana ordered the arrest of H.G., whereas the other soldier remains in detention.

En route to Syria, seven trucks belonging to Turkey's intelligence agency were stopped by gendarmerie teams on January 19 despite a national security law forbidding such an act.

Turkey's Interior Ministry said the trucks were conveying humanitarian aid to the Turkmen community in Syria.

The prosecutor and security officers who ordered the stopping of the trucks were later removed from their posts.

Turkey, US 'planning joint operation against ISIL​

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been particularly hostile against Turkey and other opposition groups in Syria.

It has been claimed that the United States and Turkey are together planning to conduct a joint operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) rebel group in Syria.

Speaking to the Daily Sabah, an unnamed source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry said that Turkey and the US will be co-operating against the armed group.

The ISIL, originally starting off as Al-Qaeda's branch in Iraq, broke off from Al-Qaeda when ISIL commander Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi disobeyed the orders of Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahri to pull out of Syria.

Zawahri had designated affiliate Nusra Front to fight in Syria under the command of al-Baghdadi's former right-hand man Abu Muhammad al-Golani.

Instead of pulling out of Syria, the ISIL turned their guns on the Nusra Front as well as other Syrian opposition forces including the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and local Turkmen and Kurdish groups.

Fedaa Majnoun, a senior FSA official, has said that once Bashar al-Assad's regime has been ousted, the FSA will be fighting to rid Syria of the ISIL, which instead of fighting regime forces has been busy fighting the Syrian opposition.

The ISIL has also been hostile to neighboring country Turkey, making threats to attack the Turkish base at Aleppo's Suleiman Shah tomb. This prompted the Turkish authorities to consider carrying out airstrikes against ISIL targets in northern Syria, with Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and others accusing the ISIL of being Assad's 'backstage partner'.

Last month, militants from the ISIL opened fire and killed Turkish security forces in Turkey's south-eastern Nigde province when officers attempted to stop the vehicle they were travelling in.

The Daily Sabah quoted one source saying "ISIL members do not consider Turks as Muslims according to their understanding of Islam. They think that a NATO ally, secular and a democratic country cannot be Muslim. As a result, they do not avoid killing Turks."

The ISIL's main base was in the city of Raqqa until they withdrew. Ironically, regime forces never bombed Raqqa when it was in ISIL hands. After other opposition groups took control of the region, regime forces began to pound in area with airstrikes.

Although it is not entirely clear where the ISIL is getting its support from, it is believed that they have been illegally selling Syrian oil after taking control of reserves.
