The U.S. has conducted a test of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) defense system in Alaska by launching a ballistic missile over the Pacific Ocean, military officials said early Sunday.

The weapon was fired by a U.S. Air Force plane and intercepted by the system, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said, describing the test as "successful."

The exercise will help the U.S. “to stay ahead of the evolving threat,” said MDA Director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves in a statement, without elaborating.

Earlier this month, U.S. officials told Reuters that the military was planning a test amid tensions with North Korea. The U.S. has THAAD interceptors in Guam that are meant to help guard against a missile attack from a country such as North Korea.

THAAD is a ground-based missile defense system designed to shoot down short-, medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

Lockheed Martin Corp, the prime contractor for the THAAD system, said it has the ability to intercept incoming missiles both inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere.

“The U.S. Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Army soldiers of the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade from Fort Bliss, Texas, conducted a successful missile defense test today using the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system,” the MDA statement said.

“A medium-range target ballistic missile (MRBM) was air-launched by a U.S. Air Force C-17 over the Pacific Ocean. The THAAD weapon system located at Pacific Spaceport Complex Alaska in Kodiak, Alaska, detected, tracked and intercepted the target.”

The U.S. has also deployed THAAD in South Korea to guard against North Korea's shorter-range missiles — angering China, which says the system's powerful radar can probe deep into its territory. Moscow and Beijing, in a joint statement, earlier this month called on Washington to immediately halt deployment of THAAD in South Korea.

i dont think that N.K is more stupid enough to launch ballistic missile on US mainland !!

It would not be stupidity, but 'nothing to lose'.

NKR is on the way to collapse. Kim Jr. knows it, and China knows it. Dictators are often killed when they fall, so where does that leave Kim ?

I don't think THAAD can stop DPRK. May if US builds a coalition including China, that might change the formula.

The number one goal of the Kim regime is to stay in power. One of the quickest ways for that regime to be obliterated from the face of the earth is to launch a ballistic missile first strike on the US mainland.

But if he has nothing to lose because he is attacked first, he would probably try to bring everyone else down with him.

Not to mention the fact that he is essentially holding South Korea hostage with all that artillery pointed at Seoul.

THAAD is designed to take out MRBM that will target Guam and Hawaii, no way will it be able to stop 100s if not 1000s of NK SRBM

NK ICBM aren't cheap and neither is the nuclear warheads. they will have a limited amount for the next 5 years.

also NK has a long track record of failures. most of their ICBM smight just fail let's say 40%, the ones that don't will be intercepted by THAAD,SM-3IIA,GMD, and also the accuracy of NK nukes is questionable, if it misses a city by more than 3KM then that 15 to 20KT nuke isn't going to kill as many muricans as they hope.

What is the point when you cannot stop the salvo launch?
we can stop a salvo launch of MRBM and ICBM. we can't stop MIRVS. SK and Japan will be f*** all those MLRS and scuds will overwhelm any missile defense system.

like I said NK big missiles like the Musadan and KN-14 haven't proven they are reliable. if NK only has 10 or less nukes that isn't enough to get past our missile screen.

the best defense is offense in my opinion. we need to hit NK with a preemptive nuclear strike. hit Pyongyang and hit the underground bases housing the MRBM/ICBM. cut the head off the snake and hopefully someone else steps in and leads NK or China comes in and takes over. Fat boy Kim time is running out
