On March 25, 2025, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps IRGC revealed a huge underground "missile city" that is said to be one of its biggest to date, thousands of precision-guided ballistic and cruise missiles that can strike American and allied assets throughout the Middle East are housed inside the site, which lies about 500 meters below the surface of a mountain, high-ranking officials, including Chief of Staff Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri and IRGC Aerospace Force Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, highlighted Iran's expanding military capabilities during the unveiling ceremony.

Crucial Missile Systems Installed
The facility houses sophisticated missiles with specific functions:

Kheibar Shekan:
A solid-fuel missile with a 1,450-kilometer range was able to move around air defenses and launch more quickly.

Haj Qasem: The 1,400-kilometer-range ballistic missile Haj Qasem named for Qasem Soleimani is intended to go by missile defense systems.

The Sejjil: Is a two-stage solid-fuel missile that can hit targets with less than 10 meters of accuracy. It has a 2,500 km range and a Mach 12–14 speed.

Emad: Is an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) powered by liquid fuel that has a 750 kg warhead and a range of 1,700 km.

Ghadr-H: Is an improved Shahab-3 that can travel 1,650 kilometers while carrying a 1,500 kilogram payload.

Strategic Implications

The underground complex enhances Iran’s survivability against preemptive strikes while enabling rapid missile deployment, solid-fuel systems like the Kheibar Shekan and Sejjil reduce launch preparation to minutes, complicating enemy detection, the facility has already been operational, with reports confirming its role in recent strikes on Israel’s Nevatim Airbase, which reportedly disabled F-35 fighter jet operations.

Regional and Global Reactions
The unveiling coincides with U.S Intelligence Chief Tulsi Gabbard’s assessment that Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, but the missile city underscores Tehran’s focus on conventional deterrence, particularly amid ongoing U.S sanctions and regional tensions, Iranian officials reiterated commitments to diplomacy but emphasized readiness to defend national interests without external pressure.

Technological Advancements
Deep Bunkering:
Defense against bunker busting bombs is offered by the 500 meter depth.

Diverse Arsenal: Targeting and reaction times are made flexible by the combination of solid and liquid-fuel missiles.

Precision Guidance: Current missile defenses are put to the test by systems like the Haj Qasem escape capabilities and the Sejjil terminal-phase maneuvering.

Broader Context
This comes after Iran's gradual missile developments, such as the 2020 Haj Qasem launch and the 2022 Kheibar Shekan debut, a move toward decentralized, survivable forces is shown by the IRGC's current claims of hundreds of comparable underground locations, although Tehran portrays these initiatives as defensive, the scope and scope of its missile program exacerbate regional security issues, especially for American bases and allies like Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Launch of the missile city demonstrates Iranian asymmetric warfare approach, which uses technology advancement and geographic location to compensate for traditional military deficiencies, the facility serves both a tactical advantage and a geopolitical declaration of resistance to outside pressure as long as tensions remain.
