You know this is withholding tax and adjustable in your final tax return. The only people who should cry (why?) are the one's who don't file tax returns.

Wait a minute...so how do 16 year olds file tax returns?

The street vendor selling apples?

Or the local cobbler?

Or the security guard around the corner?

Now these people have to file tax returns?

Withholding tax is something you put on the items for the affluent, not on items for the masses.

For the 16 year olds - the same way they can afford cell phones worth thousands of rupees and pay for the service (through their affluent parents)

The poor cobbler and security guard can't even meet their basic needs in the salary they get let alone pay for the cell phone, the tax is basically for the people who make good money and spend on lavish items and services without ever paying tax, You gave example of cobbler and security guard but failed to mention Doctors, Lawyers, businessmen, importer/exporters, shop keepers, etc.. I know their would be some genuine low earning people who would get penalized because of many high income corrupt tax evaders.

In the civilized world, tax evasion is considered a crime and tax evaders are dealt like criminals and if caught go behind bars, give me one example of a person serving time because of tax evasion? The tax officials themselves teach people how to evade tax and not get caught for a "nominal" fee offcourse.

it's not as if the tax money is going to be spent properly, is it ?

Also, agriculture in pakistan is currently in a very bad state, taxing it, will kill the economy. Real estate is already taxed through capital gains tax....

And the affluent are not the beneficiaries. It's a tiny little class of political people that get the cake. That class is maybe 1% of the affluent at the most, the rest are genuine businessmen tried to make a decent living, evading taxes because the tax rates are too fu*king high.

No one is opposing tax people are opposing repeatedly increase in tax while no increase in salary and def o improvement in social services that could show/ proof where the tax is really going
