A Taiwanese air force pilot has been killed and another is missing after their fighter jets disappeared in a suspected mid-air collision off the island’s southern coast, officials said.

The crash on Monday was the third such incident in the past half-year, at a time when the island’s armed forces are having to intercept Chinese aircraft on an almost daily basis.

The two F-5E jets disappeared from radar at about 3 pm (07:00 GMT) some 2.6km (1.6 miles) off the coast of rural southern Pingtung County, the National Rescue Command Centre said.

It added that the fighters, each with one pilot on board, crashed into the sea off the island’s southeastern coast after they apparently collided in midair during a training mission.

One of the pilots was found unconscious in the sea but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Rescuers were still searching for the remaining pilot.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said it was working on a statement, and provided no other immediate comment. The official Central News Agency said the air force had now grounded the F-5 fleet that operates from the Chihhang airbase.

Recent accidents
Another F-5 crashed in October, killing the pilot. The following month a much more modern F-16 crashed off Taiwan’s east coast, whose pilot also died.

In January last year, Taiwan’s top military official was among eight people killed when a helicopter carrying them to visit soldiers crashed in a mountainous area near the capital Taipei.

While Taiwan’s air force is well trained and equipped, mostly with US-made equipment, it is dwarfed by China’s.
Beijing views the democratic island as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under Chinese control.

Under President Xi Jinping, China has become markedly more hostile towards Taiwan and last year Chinese jets made a record 380 incursions into its defence zone, with some analysts warning that tensions between the two sides are at their highest since the mid-1990s.

The incursions force outgunned Taiwan to regularly scramble their own jets and keep pilots on a round-the-clock war footing that takes its toll on ageing aircraft and those flying them.

The US-built F-5E is an older generation fighter with a design that dates back to the 1960s. It first entered service in Taiwan in the late 1970s and has been mostly been retired from front-line activities, though some are still used for training and as back-up for the main fleet.

See what the stupid taiwanese woman will say... PLAAF shall send 100 fighter jet over Taiwan strait and try near Taipei now and see what ROCAF can do.

Why does Taiwan need to waste money on a large military. China can protect Taiwan. Does Hong Kong need a big military budget. No, HK focuses on her economy.

Speaking in terms of PRC dream than basis if reality. Protecting Taiwan is a matter for Taiwan, the US, and Japan.

PRC continues avoid recognizing that Taiwan wants good relations with China but does not want to be part of China.

Its a matter of near future Taiwan is under PRC control. Japan will never go to war for Taiwan. Taiwan now is getting more and more desperate.

I dont know why some countries keep operating that old F 5. Indonesian F5 squadron has grounded all of its F 5 fighter planes and currently get three Su 30 to keep the squadron flying capabilities. Budget has been allocated around 1.6 billion USD to fill this squadron with either F16 V, F 15 EX, or Rafale.

Even if Taiwan have difficulties getting the latest fighter models, they can already produce the AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo fighters... Similar in class to the F-20, but more modern... why are they still using the old F-5s..?? Taiwan doesn't seem to take their own defense seriously... perhaps they don't really think PRC as a threat..

China do not want to kill a single Chinese in this war from either side. This policy has created a space for the Taiwan to operate in defiance. otherwise china can take it in a short skirmish.

I hope Japan will go to war for Taiwan.

:yay::yay::yay:

Honestly I do.

Then the unfinished business of Nanjing Massacre and Unit 731 can finally be concluded.

That Yasakuni Shrine be finally turned into public toilet with Japanese Emperor as custodian of the toilet!
and Diaoyudao be back with China and Okinawa and Ryuku islands be granted freedom with China as big brother!

:D :D :D

F-CK-1 has terrible track record. It is severely under powered and highly unreliable.

Can I remain hoping?

Never know if my wishful thinking and yearning might actually come about!
No harm in letting Japanese viewers here know of that too.
And if they want to see their Emperor becoming the custodian of a public toilet.

:D:D:D

:pleasantry::pleasantry::pleasantry:
no point. japan now is no longer japan during WW2. it's just a vessel state of the US now.
