Sultan of Brunei bans Christmas 'because it could damage faith of Muslims'

But if you read, basically they allow but he just banned the public festivity...though in my personal opinion it was needless but still it should not blown out of proportions. Even in Pakistan, we think banning many Islamic religious practices publicly due to public nuisance.

would you be ok if India and Nepal (hindu dominant counties) ban public celebration of Muslim festivals? they can celebrate in secrecy in their own mosques but not outside.

Think about it. if thats not ok to you, then it should not be ok for any other religion to be shut down to secrecy by a muslim ruler.

It seems clear that Muslims aren't to be allowed to celebrate Christmas, yes?
Sir try to understand, as Islam is the only true religion and Islam is religion of peace as proved by Ghauries and Ghajnavies in ancient Indian subcontinent :Dand today's Middle East ,Sultan is doing a favor to its citizens by banning religions of hate:lol:

@Indos

I was pleasantly surprised that Brunei is not part of the Saudi alliance while sad that Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives are. As expected Indonesia is not part of the alliance.
So according to Saudis Indonesians are not true Muslims :D
Btw I think it's a favor to Indonesia, it's a modern powerful multicultural country that doesn't need any religious alliance

India would need to declare itself as a hindu republic state before doing so. I will have no objection if they throw away the mask of secularism and openly claim their identity and ensure the safety of Mosques while Muslims are celebrate their days in the mosques and homes.
Brunei is a kingdom and they never claimed to be secular or democratic and any other type of hypocrisy. They are what they are we must respect them for that.

Brunei has banned public celebrations of Christmas, warning that putting up festive decorations or singing carols could threaten the country's Muslim faith.

The conservative Islamic country on the island of Borneo allows non-Muslims to celebrate Christmas, but only within their communities, and they must first alert the authorities.

At least 65 per cent of the 420,000-strong population of the oil-rich state are Muslims.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs said in a statement: "These enforcement measures are ... intended to control the act of celebrating Christmas excessively and openly, which could damage the aqidah (beliefs) of the Muslim community."

In a warning to Muslims earlier this month, a group of Imams warned that any celebration "not in any way related to Islam” could lead to "‘tasyabbuh’ (imitation) and unknowingly damage the ‘aqidah’ (faith) of Muslims".

“During Christmas celebrations, Muslims following that religion’s acts – such as using their religious symbols like cross, lighting candles, making Christmas trees and singing religious songs, sending Christmas greetings, using signs praising the religion, putting up decorations or creating sounds and doing anything that amounts to respecting their religion – are against Islamic faith,” the Imams said, according to the Borneo Bulletin.

“Some may think that it is a frivolous matter and should not be brought up as an issue. But as Muslims and as a Zikir Nation, we must keep it (following other religions’ celebrations) away as it could affect our Islamic faith.”

Some Brunei residents rejected the ban, by posting Christmas pictures on social media using the #MyTreedom hashtag.

Brunei, a former British protectorate, is run as an absolutist Muslim monarchy by the Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, 67.

Political discontent is limited thanks to a high standard of living and free education and health care, although members of the royal family have been criticised for their extravagant lifestyles.

Michael Jackson, the late pop singer, was reportedly paid more than £10 million to give a concert in Brunei in 1996 to mark the sultan’s 50th birthday.

Last year, the sultan caused controversy by introducing Sharia criminal law, which allows for punishments including stoning, whipping and amputation.

This policy triggered a boycott of the hotel chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei’s sovereign wealth investment agency by a group of celebrities, fashion designers and other famous names.

Backed by the likes of Stephen Fry, Stella McCartney and Sir Richard Branson, the rich, famous and chic were urged not to book into any of the Dorchester Collection venues, including the Dorchester in London, Le Meurice in Paris, the Beverly Hills Hotel in LA and Il Principe in Milan.

THIS IS A BANNED FOR MUSLIM TO CELEBRATE A CHRISTMAS, I DONT SEE THAT BRUNEI BANNED CHRISTIAN TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS OPENLY

There are two interpretation of Shariah, first that Islamic government must act just like GOD like criminalizing Muslim who dont pray, follow Christian ceremony like Christmas etc etc

And the other is like me which is in a private life, no way such Islamic government control our religious duty to ALLAH, they are not our GOD.

The Islamic government should only control public domain, not the personal thing like wearing hijab or not. This is why prophet Mohammad never punish someone who doesnt pray,

Last week I had a early Christmas party in my house, in attendance were many of my friends who practice many faiths ; Catholic , Protestant, Evangelical, Shia, Sunni, Hindu, Shinto , atheist. A gathering of friends enjoying the celebration of the birth of Christ.

In fact I have gone to Mosques to celebrate Eid with my many Muslim friends, and also to pray with fellow believers .

Jesus in Islam was a holy prophet of God , Issa (peace be upon him) who was born incarnate from the Virgin Mary (Maryam). Even in Quran, there is a whole chapter dedicated to Maryam and her conception of Jesus by the power of ALLAH (SWT)!

Are you official christian country or christian majority secular country.

It is a secular , republican democracy. In fact their constitution clearly separates religion from the state. Tho the majority of Filipinos practice Christianity, there is a considerable number of muslims, buddhists, shintoist, taoist and even hindus in the country.

The place where I stayed at frequently, in Cebu Philippines, has a large number of Chinese Huaren who live there and there is even a Chinese Taoist temple there.

There is a lot of Christians in Filipinas, but they don't forcefully impose their religion on foreigners or locals who don't practice the same rite. They are mostly a very accepting, respectful people.

You miss interpret him, Saudi foreign minister calls our foreign minister so many times to include us into their alliance. Indonesian government reject because they dont give us clarity about the specifics related to that alliance. Indonesia itself is included in their official statement as supportive of that alliance.

Dont buy CNN report about us who said that our Islam is mix with our culture. That kind of Islam is only practiced by villages people and for times to times that practiced is abandon as electricity comes to their village and they start reading books. We mix Islam with our culture that is not against Islam practice and belief.

During Ottoman Empire, Indonesian has become Imam in Masjidil Haram....

My friend, where you are from, is there any sectarian issues between Shia, Sunni and Ahmadiya Muslims?
