ASEAN summit on Myanmar to be held in Jakarta: Brunei and Malaysia

For Myanmar pro democracy leader:

We are not your servant, who do you think you are ???

If you dont appreciate our effort, we would better let you short out your own problem and face military junta alone......
They are listening to western powers. Same thing what happen in Libya where African Union try to resolve it. But in this case the target this time an opportunity for western power is to weaken ASEAN. If they are smart they will take ASEAN offer, gradually build up democracy.

Indonesia has urged the Myanmar junta regime to agree to an ASEAN proposal to nominate a mediator for the ongoing political crisis or return the mandate to the region's leaders, its top diplomat has said, as the bloc struggles to break the diplomatic impasse six months after the military coup.

The fall of the democratically elected civilian government in February has proven to be a large pebble in ASEAN’s shoe, with the association failing to move the needle in Myanmar after a barrage of formal and informal meetings, both virtual and in person, as well as a dozen more visits shared among the region’s foreign ministers.

ASEAN’s nine leaders met with coup maker Min Aung Hlaing in late April in Indonesia, where they made several demands to de-escalate the violence and have the junta accept the appointment of a special envoy to mediate talks betwe…

Myanmar is a shithole now. There's disease, famine, war, flooding and even earthquakes. Min Aung Hlaing is sitting pretty in his fortified capitol and the NUG leaders are probably all out of the country as well. Meanwhile the rest of the country is starving and dyeing of covid. I doubt ASEAN special envoy can make any difference here.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov talks as a painting of Indonesia's First Presiden Soekarno is seen behind in the background during a press briefing following his meeting with Indonesia's Foreign Minister Retno

JAKARTA, July 6 (Reuters) - Russia strongly supports the Southeast Asian diplomatic effort to end the crisis in Myanmar and has conveyed similar messages to the country's military leadership, its foreign minister said on Tuesday.

The five-point consensus agreed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc should be the basis by which the situation can be resolved, Sergei Lavrov said during a visit to Jakarta.

"In our contacts with Myanmar leaders, military leaders, we promote the position of ASEAN which should be in our view, considered as a basis for resolving this crisis and bring the situation back to normalcy," Lavrov said.

Lavrov will hold virtual talks with his ASEAN counterparts, during the visit to Jakarta, Indonesia's foreign minister Retno Marsudi said.

Lavrov's comments are significant and come amid deepening engagement between Russia and Myanmar's military, as major global powers sanction its businesses and top leaders and call for a global ban on arms sales to the country.

Myanmar has been in crisis since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government on Feb. 1, unleashing nationwide anger that quickly turned into protests and strikes brutally suppressed by security forces.

Fighting between the army and newly formed militias in several regions have displaced tens of thousands of people.

Despite junta leader Min Aung Hlaing agreeing to an ASEAN peace plan reached in April, the military has shown no intent to follow through and has instead reiterated its own, entirely different plan to restore order and democracy.

The ASEAN effort calls for dialogue between all parties, the appointment of a special envoy, greater humanitarian access and an end to violence, but the bloc's most outspoken members, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, have been frustrated by the military's lack of action.

Though it has expressed concern about the violence in Myanmar, Russia, a key supplier of arms and training to its military, is among only a few countries that have recognised the junta and has sent top officials to the country to meet the generals.

Russia last month welcomed Min Aung Hlaing and a military delegation for an extended visit to Moscow, during which he gave numerous speeches and media interviews and was bestowed an honorary professorship. read more

Lavrov also discussed with Retno an agreement on health cooperation and possibility of jointly producing vaccines.

Even so, I still don't see much chance of a negotiated settlement. The two sides are too far apart. China is supporting the ASEAN effort too but from China's latest actions it seems China has already given up hope on the Junta.

China is secretly supporting the Junta, while on public, China make a loud noise scolding Tatmadaw.

There reason is, almost every young people in Myanmar hate China now because they think China is behind the coup. I know this from the facebook of my Myanmar fr.

no secret supporting. China is supporting the ethnic armies in the north on China's borders. Even those that are openly at war with the Junta like the KIA. Basically China has given up on central and southern Myanmar and is leaning on the ethnic armies in the north to help secure the border and prevent a refugee crisis in China.
