Sri Lanka's population growth 0.7 percent over last decade

Sri lanka is an example to follow in many things for other south Asian countries.

However , such a slow growth rate can lead to some trouble later on when there will too many old people and too few young people being burdened with them . For a developing country particularly this can be a problem .

Yeah that's what I read somewhere as well. Already the SL population is aging in comparision to other South Asian countries which causes its own set of 'problems' (health care + welfare + large population not contributing to the economy). Having said that I'm sure the 0.7 rate over the last 10 years was heavily influenced by conditions of war with lots of people leaving the country.

7.9% is still really impressive for the first quarter, when you consider China had 8.1% growth in the same quarter, which is a difference of only 0.2%.

So still amongst the highest growth rates in the world. :tup:

Also, the maps above are quite interesting. It seems that the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka is the most densely populated, whereas in China it is the Southeast coast.

These areas are much develop than other areas of the country, mainly the climate is good for living.
foreigners mostly choose Galle district after Colombo.

.
I think the ratio to keep national demographics from aging is 2.11 children to every couple. Most of the developed world has dipped way below that, China included.

Good work, Sri Lanka!

Every South Asian country except India can reduce their population growth.. No offence but India is full of slums and the people inside tem have no knowledge of anything so Indiais slowly becoming more and more densily populated.

I think India has reduced its population growth, but I think the scary thing is that because India already has a massive population of more than 1 billion any additional growth makes it mind boggling. I read somewhere that India adds about 25-30 million people to its population every year which is a LOT of people.

Being densely populated does bring its own issues, but not necessarily if there is proper planning (Japan, Singapore, Netherlands, South Korea are all very densely populated countries). The issue in South Asia at least is that there is no or very little planning so more and more people get added to the population without any corresponding investment in better infrastructure, public housing, transport, schools, health, etc and that does bring about a lot of problems.

Nice job at dissing India, but the key word here is 'can'..the reality is that all major countries in South Asia have a higher fertility rate higher than India

Pakistan= 3.52
BD=2.83
Nepal=3.28, and

India= 2.81

With regards to Pakistan I think that at independence Pakistan had an AMAZING opportunity to reduce popopulation growth and thus free itself of the population pressures found in other South Asian countries because at independence Pakistan had a population of 30 million in a huge land area. That is 30 million people in an area bigger than South India! However that has ballooned to around 170 million people today. But even today Pakistan has a lower population density than other South Asian countries.

Its very important for Pakistan as Pakistan only has 26.5% of their land arable.

Great work Srilanka.:cheers:.. all of south Asian countries need to follow on Srilankan steps and reduce population growth...
They killed many innocent civilians , thats an act of shame , more over SL army too had causalities . Thats the reason for less growth .

Death of people due to war - I think - is a minor contribution compared to immigration out of the country. Also, the census did not take into account a million+ Sri Lankans working in the Middle East.

i think death toll in war is high irrespective of the side , the war also has indirect effect like migration ,....

This is a problem Pakistan will continue facing till the time it does not improve its disgustingly low literacy levels .

India 's TFR is lower than most nations in South Asia including yours . Now go read about what TFR is .

India TFR - 2.6 ( 2010)
Pakistan TFR - 3.4 (2010)

Apart from that India has one of the highest amount arable land in the world. Real population density is calculated on arable land. now educate yourself about the term ' real population density ' .

We have lowest density population rate in South Asia.. Even if we grow for more than 4 decades at this rate we won't be able to reach the population density rate India is at

We have lowest population density rate in South Asia, even if we grow like this for 4 decades we won't be able to reach the population density India is at right now.

I don't understand the bit about "arable land" because from the definition in the link above it appears as if arable land is just defined as land that has been cultivated - disregarding any land that has not been used for cultivation/farming. Meaning it is just a measure of how much land is in the country is used for cultivation - not a measure of the % of land in the country that COULD BE cultivated.

Same as how it's not reliable to measure GDP per capita in a third world country like Pakistan, India, BD, Sri Lanka etc

Buy your arable land is not going to increase and you have only about 25% of your land as arable in Pakistan making it South Asia's lowest after Nepal.
