This is a clean-sheet design by the Japanese and only came into service in 2013. Japan is desperate for buyers in order to be able to recoup development costs. It's price is around 140 million US dollars when fully outfitted, but this will come down if Japan gains export orders.

BD really needs lots of MPA aircraft and current plans are to buy 32 cheaper jets from either Russia or China. No disrespect to either Russia or China but the Japanese aircraft is likely to be better technologically and also it has a massive range of 8000km, so the aircraft can patrol far from BD coasts and/or loiter for a very long time.

Would BD be wise to approach the Japanese for sale of these planes?

The P-1 is easily the best MPA in the world after the P-8 but I seriously doubt the need for BD to procure such expensive MPAs with such long range. What is BD's underwater threat profile?

Bangladesh should procure them definitely and very soon. In case of India-pak war bangladesh will be glad to lend it to india. (if not........)
Of course gas is on us, but I believe bangla brothers are generous enuf to lend it with topped up tank!

India doesn't need any external help to protect its interests.

Two of this will be cost like 350 million$ and surely bd can spend that much money .But it has no practical use for our navy .Myanmar doesn't have subs and India is a superpower ,So the answer is no.BD need more fighter jets than a fancy MPA .

India is the hero of such tiny n tidy countries like bangla,,lanka,,bhutan,,nepal,,etc. and they feel proud to talk about india.... But Pakistan is the hero of 56 Islamic countries and have a good relation with superpowers....

Acquisition costs can be dealt with if Japan offers a line of credit, but Bangladesh will need to be careful about long-term support costs.

At this time, the P-1 is basically only in use with Japan, and it isn't an inherently cheap system. If Japan can't or won't scale, then Bangladesh may be burdened by a platform that becomes unreasonably costly to operate.

I am not saying this is the case with the P-1, but it's worth keeping in mind when looking at hi-tech products that don't have the scale found in the U.S. or wide-scale adoption.

I'd recommend taking the Airbus DS C-235 or C-295, and then configuring it to be a full-fledged MPA with AShW, ASW and ISR capabilities. Bangladesh can even seek out the best sub-systems available on the market to ensure that its MPAs are well equipped. Acquisition, maintenance and operational costs could end up being low relative to the capabilities on offer.

Frankly saying and no hard feelings,P-1 is quite costly platform and Bangladesh barely needs so costly platform. They should first concentrate on their undersea capabilities.A simple co-op with India can get that data from India.Or they can simply join hands with USA for undersea detection capabilities.detecting a submarine will not be enough. You have to destroy it as well. For that, first concentrate on Submarines and strengthening its surface fleets.

I frankly believe BN and BAF should have join forces with IN and IAF. With network centric capabilities, its onl BN which gains from India. Like Joint OPeration command of US and Canada.

Simply no. We don't have the weight to buy and operate this aircraft.

Well we have both Myanmar and India to worry about as immediate neighbours. Myanmar won't need something as good as P-1 but India certainly will.

Now before you say it, BD does not consider India as an enemy but it must plan for capability and not intention, and who knows what the relations will be like in the 2040s when any MPA aircraft procured now will still be in service.

Japan has been a very good friend to Japan in terms of the generous aid they have given to build up BD infrastructure, and so BD buying these aircraft will be one small way of paying them back.

Within BD's budget, it can afford around 12 of these aircraft and this should be enough for BD to patrol deep into the Bay of Bengal round the clock and for extended periods.

I don't think that BD needs to worry about the fact that there is no foreign customer as the Japanese are committed and they will purchase a massive 65 of these planes.

@Quwa : see my above line about scaling.

Are you sure?

BD has an intention to buy 32 MPA aircraft from either Russia or China. These aircraft will sell for around 40 million dollars a piece and have nowhere near the capability of the P-1. If BD was to cut down the order to 12 P-1s then it would be affordable.

BD would not want to be reliant on India or any other country for it's long-term security.

Of course not.But till one can afford, one has to rely on others,or cheaper versions.

P-3c Orion is more than enough to meet BD's requirements.

BD has the money to buy over a billion US dollars of MPAs.The government has already budgeted for 32 MPAs and these look like they will come from Russia or China.

My point is why get larger numbers of less capable platforms when BD can purchase less numbers of a more capable platform like the P-1?

12 P-1s for say 140 million US dollars each is affordable for BD. Remember BD is spending the most money this decade on the Navy as it has made a decision to focus in this area for now.

not affordable, as BD need to upgrade other sector though which is had a more even dire needs (like fighter, beginner trainer aircraft, transport aircraft) and given a chance for a much more lower cost MPA aircraft like CN-235 or ATR-72 series. Remember, BD only had 2 to 3 billion US dollar to be spend for the entire branch of armed forces, and most of them had their own programme too.
