Scraping through: 45% population living below the poverty line, reports BIS

The question of poverty is without doubt an issue.
The blatant corruption by our scumbag leaders is the tip of the iceberg. I hope and pray for new leadership to make this one of the most important priority in their manifesto.
The lack of credibility that these morons have installed in the international field has not helped. Its harder to attract foreign investment and so the circle of poverty continues.....

I believe more data on the shindigs going on in BISP must be unearthed here..
for all its claim of digitization.. its nothing more than a massive pool for funnelling of funds for personal corruption.

So 1000 rs per month to more than 20% of poor family ..thats a good scheme

Horrible to say the least..
and out of the so called people BISP lists.. a large percentage is fake.. on paper..
its a shame that such officials dont have the moral decency to realize on which cause they are looting and filling their coffers.

More than 1 million fake cases found in (BISP) Benazir Income Support Programme - YouTube

No Pakistani should be against a real appraisal of the situation, how else would a treatment be found if the ailment and the extent of its spread, reasons for it etc are not known. Poverty in the subcontinent is rampant. Pakistan is no different, More or less half of your population lives in poverty. Think of solutions - it is more easier to solve it in Pakistan/ Bangladesh like countries owing to their smaller homogeneous populations.

I think this BISP the report authors validity is somewhat questionable:

BISP biggest corruption hub, says ANP leader.

A key partner of PPP's ruling coalition, Awami National Party, on Sunday alleged that the much-touted Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) was the hub of corruption, having no role in combating the alarmingly-rising level of poverty across Pakistan.

Senator Zahid Khan, the ANP's central information secretary, during a chat with media here said he would file a question with the Senate Secretariat on Monday regarding 'massive corruption in BISP'. "We would like to know what they have achieved in these three years with regard to fighting poverty," he noted.

In fact anything to do with that corrupt Zardari and Gillani must be dealt with suspicion. Certainly I would question the veracity of any claim made by them

We have public distribution system where almost 30% of grains are found in private shops ..but still it is a good system.. Providing a kg of rice for 3 rs .. I am all for such schemes even if 40% is misutilized ..remaining 60% certainly will go to right mouths ..

Unfortunately.. that is difficult to achieve with current government inefficient.. and most independent observers are not suited to take up accurate data..
For eg.. what may be considered poor in Norway may be "lower middle class" in our nations..
It has to reflect our income vs expenditure..and our basic needs... only then can we come with a realistic appraisal.

I know there is incredible wealth that is present in Pakistani accounts of people that live abroad.
In 2008 i know of a small travel agency that, through hawala banking - sent in the region of £311,000,000 in 11 moths to Pakistan. This figure show in itself if things were to show signs of change their would be an incredible amount ready to be poured into our nation. Instead people are sitting on these funds or directing it towards Dubai etc.
Secondly its about time someone with balls put their foot down and made the likes of Zardari accountable for example of his personal wealth and how he acquired it - the likes of him have milked our nation enough and its high time they are removed or even exterminated if Pakistan people are to be given the chance of letting the ship change direction.
These people must be brought into line by the next powers to be - simple........

You do realize the UN reports have to depend on statistics/data provided by the corresponding Govt.

From where were the figures of 12% poverty calculated in official documents, as suggested by first paragraph of OP?

Why are people even surprised by poverty in Pakistan? Looking at the current state when nothing is going its way what else can be expected.. No functional govt, no FDI, terrorism/terrorist (taliban) sympathizers on rise etc are the main contributors to the numbers..

From where were the figures of 12% poverty calculated in official documents, as suggested by first paragraph of OP?

Talk to this guy - Shahbaz Rana – The Express Tribune

He probably will have all answers for you..

a small Travel agency with around 311 million pounds sounds like shady and Hawala banking transaction does prove it.. And I must tell you all the Hawala money turns into black money and is often uses for reasons that are considered all not good..

why the topic poverty in india is banned and this piece isnt.

I agree and support you on banning poverty related topics.

The big problem is that corruption is done before the common man is given his rights. In countries of middle east, corruption does happen big time. But the thing here is that corruption is done after the rights are given, and proper work is done.

For example, a Park was being constructed near my house, site engineer was pakistani. One day huge amounts of concrete and iron rods were being placed in the ground, and I asked what is this for? he said for pavement. I said 'khuda ka khauf karo, truck guzarna hai?'. The reply he gave was that the main contractor wants some money for himself, so he pours extra amount of material in, so as to inflate the cost.

This way, the pavement is perfectly fine, and durable, while the contractor gets his share.

What happens here is that no work is done, while corruption is done to the full. Everybody thinks that corruption is their right, and then try to justify it.
