saddam actually wasn't that bad in the begining. At one point they were the bread basket of the Arab world and produced the most scientists and PHD holders in the Middle East. Everything went to shi t when he attacked Iran and Kuwait. This is what happens when one man rules a country. When he goes insane, he takes down the whole neighborhood. Same thing is happening in KSA and Bahrain today.

Iraq, by 1979, was the most educated and prosperous of all Arab countries. May be the Saudis had more oil money but the human capital of Iraq was (and perhaps still is?) was better. Women, minorities were well protected and represented.
Indeed, one-man rule is a curse in a tough neighborhood. The dictator can feel some 'heat' from some internal and external quarters and goes beserk. He knows he is not answerable to anyone and does whatever he seems to think is the 'national interest'.

btw, I am not the least bit surprised about Iran's scientific base. Every Iranian I have met so far came out as intelligent, forward looking person. Iranian movie industry makes some great stuff. They can be found at Netflix. They can't arise in a culture without strong foundations.

The mullah regime is an anochronism. It is a repressive regime. It probably would not even be present had it not been the Western meddling in Iran's affairs, starting with the overthrow of the Mosadeque (spp?) regime in the 50s' (for which Obama has implied an apology). However, even now Iran's political system has significant elements of democracy.

3rd world countries can go through 100 political revolutions and still be dirt poor banana republics that won't defend their resources from the West.
But it takes only 1 scientific revolution to become a competitor.

Europeans can't understand the simplest of facts, or maybe it's that they don't care, I don't know.
They don't understand that every nation must go through a process. Democracy can not be force fed. Same with liberalism. It must be achieved organically or it won't work. Egypt might become like Iran but in a couple of decades it will change again like Iran is changing today. The only reason IRan is moving away from the ideals opf Khomaini is that 75 percent of Iran was born after the revolution. With the death of the old generation, new ideals take over. Iran is also much more educcated than the 70's. Back then, during the shah's time, only half the country could read and write. Today literacy among elementry school aged children is 100 percent. When the old generation dies, literacy rate of IRan will reach higher levels than some Western countries. All this is leading towards a more open and progressive society.
IMO the Islamic Republic was a necissary evil.

There is one point i didn't agree totally Abii jon
Most of people young during revolution are still alive: most of them.
It is true that very young people are so different. But it doesn't explain the most.
Revolution was not a wish for a dictatorship. But sadly with time, our gouvernance was misleaded. Invasion by Iraq didn't help.
Remember Khomeiny said no pasdaran no basij allowed in economy or politics : now they do
As well now many know Khomeiny gave order to assassinate the opposants and that's why Montazeri was blocked at home because he criticized it.
I have family from pasdarans . Even it changed inside. Before it was the war now it is peace and these people became mafia and basiji have too much power and advantages. it is not acceptable.
you add with this all the unemployment, the educated who go foreign countries... well there are so many problems
reformist was a hope but they didn't have much power . now people want even more. the end of this regime. even religious families like my wife 's one or martyr family like mine.
we're fed up of all this system. we want respect of people and that's Islam. Islam is not threatening people because they go on streets. Islam is not giving weapons to Hamas so they can kill more Israelis.
