SC: If sati can be banned, why not polygamy ?

. .
How prevalent is Polygamy in Pakistan ?

@Icarus @waz @fatman17 @Spring Onion @Imran Khan

Not very common really, maybe more common in rural areas. Honesty apart from some Mullahs I haven't met a single Pakistani either in my family or friends with more then one wife. Also try getting married again, the society will make fun of the man if he is trying to marry another woman. I'm talking about Karachi, I don't know about rest of Pakistan but I guess the attitudes would be similar in other urban areas of Pakistan.

.
So Sati where a widow is burned on her husbands funeral pyre is being compared to Islamic Polygamy where a man is burned everyday of his life by his (upto)4 wives and (mother in laws). I don't get it

the society will make fun of the man if he is trying to marry another woman

I would rather see a man having more wives than more affairs. How many people in power have been openly mocked by our society for having affairs ?

. . .
Nop, it was a pretty popular practice among you guys:

Has been abolished, but not by choice - you were forced to abolish by a civilized foreign bunch. ;)

so what do you say about the practices followed by the ISIS ( who do everything in the name of Islam ) . you are commenting about something that was abolished....now answer me about the barbaric thing existing in your religion that is existing today....

P.S: dont say crap like - ISIS are false/ misguided muslims and all that coz we could also argue that that those hindu's were also misguided.

Table 4: Gender Inequality Index | Human Development Reports

Both at rank 127 now. So Pakistan dropped 4 ranks and Indian gained 5 ranks since your news story.

And I bet that trend will continue.
It will again improve again but still the very fact that muslim Pakistan had a better ranking than you should be a hard slap on your self perceived superiority and we are not even comparing you to other muslim states with more equality like Egypt,Turkey and Iran here

Banning multiple wives can only be a good thing for men in general, and Muslim men in particular.

All married men suffer from bouts of homicidal ideation.

Multiply that by 4 and you have some idea of why some Muslim men do what they do.

Multiply the 4 into 4 separate mothers-in-law and you have an exponential potentiation of that explosive (pun unimplied) situation.

I've never really understood the theology behind the promise of 72 virgins, nor the intricacies of the riders involved, but the fact that its virgins and not wives gives me a clue as to the attraction of the promise implied.

On topic, yes, one man, one wife, for all Indians, thank you very much.

Cheers, Doc
According to my information, according to the changing rules of Islam it is not really allowed anymore... polygamy that is. It was done to reduce the wives of muslim arab men and now there is no place for it. You have one wife only.

Did I read this wrong. But looks like India at 135 and. Pakistan at 146.?

I think there have been a lot of scientific studies to show that children brought up in polygamous marriages, everything else being equal, do much worse in a lot of indicators than kids brought up in two parent homes.

Sati temples discovered in Ramanathapuram - The Hindu

Mr. Rajaguru found that they were ‘Maalai temples’ built on the burial sites of warriors and heroes, who laid down their lives during battles and while performing heroic acts, after their wives committed ‘sati’.

“The four-pillared temple near Bharatha Matha High School in Narippaiyur has distinct Pandya style of architecture and could date back to the 13th century,” Mr. Rajaguru told The Hindu on Saturday. Three such temples were found in Narippaiyur. Statutes were missing in the temples, except for a half-broken statue in one temple which indicated that it could be of a warrior, he said.

Local people had no details about the temples but called them ‘Maalaiyadi’ temples, indicating that the temples were built to offer worship and in gratitude of ‘Maalai’ (woman) who committed ‘sati’, he said.

There were no inscriptions in the temples, he said, adding the pillars and corbels in one of the temples had a mark of Pandya architectural style, prevalent during the 13th century, he said.

The other two temples in the area could date back to the 15th century Vijayanagar period. Sandstones had been used for construction of these temples, he added.

Descendents of a woman, who committed self-immolation after her husband died after falling from a horse, still offered worship at a 18th century ‘sati’ temple at Kokkarankottai near Sayalkudi. Worship was also offered at ‘Maalai Amman’ temple in Vembar in Tuticorin district which was six km away from the place, Mr. Rajaguru said.

Where have I said that we are superior? Religion/culture has very little to do with Gender equality when education and economics dictate the bad development position of the majority of people.

However when that is sorted out relatively speaking, we see which countries are clearly bad for women by the gender equality rank being much worse than their HDI rank.

KSA for example has HDI rank of 34 compared to gender equality rank of 56.

For Qatar its 31 and 113 respectively.

Jordan its 71 and 101 respectively

Egypt 110 and 130 respectively

Iran 75 and 109 respectively

-----

On the other hand Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Turkey and Malaysia and Indonesia have better or equal Gender equality ranks than their HDI rank.

So Muslim countries seem to have a big variance in trajectory for gender equality as they develop. I wonder which one Pakistan will follow.

Thats HDI rank. Gender equality rank is two columns over.

Polygamy practiced in Islamic history during the time of wars which was to safeguard the widows and give protection to the orphans.
