Thales Secures Maintenance Contract in Saudi Arabia
10 Oct 2017 | Railway News

Thales has signed a two-year contract with the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) to maintain the signalling and telecommunications systems of the 2,400 km Northern Train project.

This contract also includes the transfer of knowledge to SAR national teams and complies with the objectives of “Saudi Arabia Vision 2030”.

Northern Train Project
The Northern Train project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the longest railway in the world equipped with state of the art technology signalling and communications systems, the ETCS Level 2. The project, currently in operation, involved the construction of 2,400 km of track, sidings, yards, depots, stations and administrative facilities of the two lines. SAR transports passengers from the capital city of Riyadh to Qurrayat (Northern Saudi Arabia), in addition to the heavy transport of minerals from the mines of the raw phosphates and bauxite in the Northern and central regions to the processing and export sites on the Arabian Gulf, in addition to Wa’ad Al Shamal project.

Signalling and Telecommunications
The maintenance activities will be performed by Thales through specialised engineers and technicians located across eight maintenance bases situated along the 2,400 km of railway line.

The contract includes the transfer of knowledge, which will be performed through a curriculum of training at Thales’ factories in the kingdom. This will allow SAR maintenance teams to gradually take over the maintenance activities for the duration of the two-year contract.

To achieve these objectives, Thales has contributed to equip the electronic laboratories and has simulated the signalling and telecommunication systems in Saudi Railway Polytechnic laboratories which will be used for the training programmes.

Saudi Railway Polytechnic (SRP) was established in Buraydah (Qassim Province) through a partnership between SAR and The Technical and Vocational Training Corporation (TVTC) to provide the Saudi teams with the vocational and technical qualifications in signalling & telecommunications systems, rolling stock maintenance and train driving.

Thales Maintenance Services
In addition to the partnership with SAR for the deployment and maintenance of its railway network, Thales provides maintenance services across all solutions and systems in use by significant transport infrastructure providers. In the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Thales provides maintenance services to the Al Mashaer Al Mugaddassah Makkah Metro (MMMP, the metro of the holy sites in Makkah) and Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Just to give you guys a little idea of what kind of nature we are up against in this part of KSA.

Some of those sand dunes (the tallest in the world) can get up to 500 meters tall. People can do the math.

. .
Very good to see KSA investing in its infrastructure and development. It's always good to see countries (especially developing) strive to lift up their peoples living standards and improve their way of life. Infrastructure also plays a big part in this. Since as they say wherever road /railways (or infrastructure in general) goes development follows.
Very commendable project. Such projects should be implemented over the whole country in the long term.and the standards should also be maintained, not abandoned with time.

.
Is this train going to extend to Israeli border???

Hopefully you will not only one day be able to travel from Salalah in Southern Oman all the way to Al-Quds/Jerusalem but also once day from one end of the Arab world (Oman) to the other (Morocco).

From Salalah in the East:

To Agadir (Morocco) in the West:

And Insha'Allah we will see a railway connection between Makkah, Madinah and Al-Quds one day as well.

Thats very good for all GCC people.

Added bonus would be for Dajjal to be able to travel freely from Israel to Medina whenever he wishes. Or atleast ferry supplies.

Dont mean this in negative sense but just can't stop thinking about how things are taking shape.

o_O

Since he most likely has an Israeli passport and travels with it, he will not have access to KSA so you should not worry my friend.

Well, I am afraid that a railway or a lack of it will not stop him either.

Anyway trolling is trolling.

Very good development. Seems the Saudi government has a good vision to uplift the country and improve people's livelihood. This is the sort of thing other developing countries should be emulating.
Seems this new Saudi leader is a modernist and forward looking dude. That's why its always good to have young people take the lead of a nation, instead of having old leaders whose time have passed thus limiting their ability to properly think in a rational way. Leaders like the old crippled Algerian president Bouteflicka, Mugabe of Zimbabwe, Paul Biya of Cameroon, or former ones like Mubarak, etc and many other African/M.E dictators should be a thing of the pass.
I heard that this young Saudi leader has even lifted the ban on women going to football stadiums?

Indeed. TONS of positive news coming out of KSA lately and much more is to come.

I fully agree.

Yes, that moronic law (in place since 1979) was removed and yesterday 1000's of women in Jeddah saw a local match.

Another moronic law with origins in the "Sahwa era" and in the post Grand Mosque Seizure/Iranian "Islamic" Revolution (both in 1979) era. In the dustbin for good. A few of such moronic laws remain in place but their lifespan is very short-lived by all accounts.

‘We will cheer until our throats go sore’: Saudi women celebrate at Riyadh football match

RIYADH: History was made in Jeddah on Friday night — and then came Riyadh’s turn.

Pink tickets were issued for today’s football match between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad, the second since a ban on women attending games in Saudi Arabia was lifted.

There was cheer in the capital as women started arriving at the King Fahd International Stadium, with face painting, food trucks and other fun activities outside the ground.

Scores of women signed a board to mark their attendance at the historic match.
Inside the stadium, women were waving flags and singing team anthems as the game kicked off.
Siham, an Al-Ittihad fan, said she had never felt happier, or more free.
“I’m quite surprised by the turn out! I assumed families will attend, which is true. However, the amount of ladies coming together in groups to have a good time and enjoy the match overweighs the number of families,” she told Arab News.
Layla, another fan in the crowd, said: “This is a joyous day; tonight we all stand together, teams aren’t the main focal point; us attending is. And we will cheer until our throats go sore.”
Amid the contagious excitement of the crowd, a further cheer erupted as Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan — president of the Saudi Federation for Community Sports, and a champion of women participating in sport — entered the stadium.
Princess Reema waved to the crowd and sat chatting with some fellow fans in the stadium.
One elderly father was with almost 30 female relatives at the game, including his daughters and nieces.
Sitting a few rows back from them, he looked on happily as the ladies cheered and waved their team’s flag.
Fans of both teams sat in the same area — united by both a love of football, and the new freedom to watch it in person.
The game follows Friday night’s showdown at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, which saw Al-Ahli host Al-Batin in a Saudi Pro League meeting.
The decision allowing women in stadiums was first announced on Oct. 29, a month after a historical royal decree lifting the ban on women driving.

Saudi Arabian football fans are peaceful. Only a few ultras/hardcore fans but they are nothing like in Turkey (Besiktas for example or Trabzonspor fans) so they have nothing to worry about. Cursing (not too much of it on football stadiums in KSA), women do themselves. They are not so innocent as many of us believe. So no worries.
