Haramain express train to start operation next year

March 22, 2017

JEDDAH — The Haramain express train will start operation in 2018, local daily Al-Madina reported on Tuesday quoting Rumaih Al-Rumaih, chairman of the Public Transport Authority and the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO).
The train will be linking Makkah and Madinah with Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh.

“Work on the project will be completed before the end of this year,” he said, adding that test runs are currently being conducted on the Madinah-Rabigh line.

According to recent reports, only 20 km of rails in Makkah are to be completed. Out of the distance of 450 km between Makkah and Madinah, about 430 km of rails have been completed.

The train will cover the distance between Makkah and Madinah in two-and-a-half hours and the distance between Jeddah and Makkah in 30 minutes.
It will be a convenient means of transport for pilgrims.

Rumaih also said that a study will soon be conducted for the construction of dry ports near King Abdul Aziz Seaport in Dammam and the Jeddah Islamic Seaport.

“These dry ports will reduce the pressure on sea ports in the western region and the Eastern Province and will put an end to the stockpiling of containers,” he told local daily Al-Yaum on Tuesday.

Rumaih said that studies have been completed and blueprints are ready for the construction of a 1,150-km-long railway land bridge linking the west and the east of the Kingdom.

He said the bridge will extend along the coast of the Arabian Gulf to Riyadh then along the west coast of the Red Sea to Jeddah.

Rumaih invited the private sector to participate in the implementation of the project and said partnership between the public and private sectors will improve services and boost the sustainability of the basic infrastructure.

Fund established to build 'Darb Al Haramain complex' valued at about SR4 billion

Residential and commercial complex for Al Haramain Train Station visitors located in the old airport area in Jeddah

Economy_15_1.jpg

May 25, 2017

JEDDAH — Al-Enmaa Investment Company has established a real estate development fund to build the Darb Al Haramain complex that costs about SR4 billion located in the old airport area in Jeddah, its CEO Eng. Saleh Al-Hanaki said.

The complex, regarded as the most important residential and commercial complex for Al Haramain Train Station visitors, occupies an area of 1,383,345 square meters on the intersection of King Abdullah Road and Al Haramain Train Station. The start of the execution of the construction plans began in December 2016, while the marketing and selling of units are expected to start early next year. The project is planned to be completed by the beginning of 2018.

The complex has its modern unique structure that was designed by Hossam Al-Abdulkarim›s office in alliance with Cal Thorpe, Kranekel, and WPS. The affiliation with these specialized architecture offices ensures the development of a modern complex that is full of vital services and modern facilities, allowing the residents as well as visitors to enjoy their stay in the complex, achieving all the success and comfort factors for the complex as a residence or an investment opportunity. The complex design stands to be the first of its kind when compared to other similar projects in Jeddah, as it is structured with seven floors (services + 5 identical residences + an appurtenance) with the minimum number of 60 floors for the residential buildings within the complex, and located directly on King Abdullah Road. In addition, the main road named “Al-Hijaz Road” was constructed to divide the complex from the west to the east, with buildings along the sides ranging from 20 – 60 floors each. The complex also includes a large central park and medium-size gardens that obtain all the sports and entertainment activities, as well as services amenities for the residences of the complex. The latter was designed by Kranekel Co. in cooperation with the Engineer Hossam Abdul Karim office who also supervised the complex›s infrastructure deign by the Canadian company WSP.

The supervision and implementation of the project were assigned to The Arab Center for Engineering Consultancy, a center that has been specialized in the field of engineering consultancy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for nearly 30 years, during which it has provided its services for several major projects across the kingdom.

Al-Enma Investment Company has appointed Saqefat Al-Safa Real Estate Development and Management Company to undertake the implementation and marketing of the project. The latter is well known for the development of several distinguished projects within Saudi Arabia, as well as the marketing of other distinctive projects across the kingdom and other countries in the last twenty years.

Darb Al Haramain complex will have access to high-level road networks trafficking from and to the complex, as well as allowing Jeddah metro to pass through Al-Hijaz road, leading to the nearby Al Haramain train station, allowing major commercial and touristic interchange in the area. The Sulaymaniyah main station in Jeddah is considered the most important railway station of the five connecting Al Haramain train station, as it links the departure and arrival of a huge number of users, which calls for an urgent demand of houses, hotels and various commercial projects, where the need of hotel rooms reach up to 17,000 rooms during the first five years of the train’s launch, and its commercial services or activities. Some 1.5 million visitors and pilgrims are expected to travel through Darb Al-Haramain residential, accommodation, or commercial projects, benefiting from all the surrounding facilities, especially Al Haramain Train Station, King Abdulaziz University, its hospital, and all the vast commercial centers that are surrounding the location. The residents of Darb Al-Haramain will benefit from the possibility of traveling through Al-Haramain Train to Makkah in 21 minutes, and to Madinah in an hour and a half, in effect, they will enjoy the possibility of visiting the Holy Mosques on daily basis and with ease.

Talgo train reaches 310km/h on Saudi HS line

Written by Keith Barrow
June 15, 2017

TESTING of Saudi Arabia’s 453km Haramain high-speed line reached a milestone on June 15 when a Talgo 350 train reached 310km/h on the section between King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) and Medina, exceeding the maximum commercial operating speed of 300km/h for the first time.

In the coming weeks speeds will be incrementally increased to 330km/h (maximum speed +10%) as the train fleet moves towards final approval for passenger operation.

Talgo says dynamic testing is proceeding satisfactorily in extreme environmental conditions, with outside temperatures of up to 50oC and windblown sand.

The trains are equipped with a so-called “desert pack” encompassing more than 30 additional technologies developed specifically for the project. Features include certified thermal resistance of up to 50oC and an auxiliary power supply which is capable of keeping the air-conditioning system operational for more than two hours in the event of an overhead electrification failure.

The trains are also equipped with blowers positioned close to the wheels to clear sand off the track, positive atmospheric pressure, military-grade air filters, reinforced door seals to prevent dust ingress, and polyurethane sheeting on the driving cab windows to reduce wear from blowing sand.

Talgo is supplying 36 of the 215m-long trains (including a royal train) with an option for 20 more. The manufacturer will maintain the fleet for 12 years.

“I would like to thank the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince for supporting the project. I would also like to thank the Emir of Makkah, the Emir of Madinah and the security and service authorities. The support and aid of these various government entities is what made the project a success,” said Al-Rimaih.

He also said the Saudi Railways Organization is working on fulfilling the Vision 2030.

“The train connects Makkah with Madinah passing through Jeddah, King Abdulaziz Airport and King Abdullah Economic City in Rabigh. The project is progressing faster than planned and is expected to be completed by the end of 2017,” said Al-Rimaih.

KSA to issue tenders for 1,600km rail line early ’18
3 hours ago

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia is planning to issue tenders for its long-delayed Land Bridge rail project linking the Red Sea port of Jeddah with the Arabian Gulf and the capital Riyadh by early 2018, Saudi Railways Company Chief Executive Bashar Al Malik told Bloomberg.

He said the firm had seen an encouraging response to an invitation for expressions of interest for the 1,600km line from the private sector. As a result, it will issue contract tenders by the end of 2017 or early 2018, he said.

Contracts for the project were first awarded in 2008 with the aim of accelerating freight transport across the kingdom from the current five days to two days.

The project originally included 958km of track between Jeddah and Riyadh, the upgrade of a 450km line between Riyadh and Dammam and a second 150km line between Dammam and Jubail.

Al Malik said the cost of the line would depend on the exact route chosen and the location of the Red Sea terminal. It was originally estimated to cost around $7bn.

Local and international engineering companies and financial institutions are expected to be among the bidders.

The kingdom has allocated $14bn to infrastructure and transport projects this year from $10.1bn last year amid renewed progress on key rail projects.

The high-speed Haramain line linking Makkah and Madinah is expected to by fully operational in the first quarter of 2018 following test runs this year.

The kingdom will also open a 2,750km line from Riyadh to Gurayat on the Jordanian border to passengers in December, according to reports.

Saudi Railways is looking at other projects including an increase to freight capacity for Saudi Arabian Mining Co at Waad Al-Shamal in the kingdom’s north and extra rail links to Saudi Aramco’s operations in the Tabuk, Turaif and Al Jouf areas.

Another potential project could increase freight haulage for agricultural production in the Busaita area of Al Jouf that is home to some of the kingdom’s largest farms, Al Malik told Bloomberg.

Saudi to open 2,750km Riyadh-Gurayat rail line in Dec

Wednesday 13 September 2017

Saudi Arabia is planning to open a 2,750km rail line between Riyadh and Gurayat near the Jordanian border in December, according to reports.

The new line, which is being built at a cost of SAR10bn ($2.66bn), will reduce rail travel time between the two cities from 13 to eight hours.

Two trains will operate the line during the day and overnight respectively and pass through Al Majma’ah, Al Qassim, Hail and Al-Jouf.

Services between Riyadh and Al Qassim began in February.

Saudi Gazette cited an official from Saudi Railways Company as confirming the December 24 opening date.

The daytime train will include nine coaches, with three for business class passengers, four for economy passengers and one each for dining and baggage.

“This train can carry 444 passengers and will run at a speed of 200 kmh,” the official was quoted as saying.

The night train will have 13 coaches – three for economy, one for business, three sleeping, four to transport cars and one each for dining and baggage.

It will accommodate 377 passengers and travel at 160kmh.

Each of the six stations on the line will also feature arrivals and departures areas and areas for shops, restaurants, tourist services and car rental as well as parking for 500 vehicles.

The planned December opening comes following several trial runs over the past year.

The kingdom is also expected to open a 450km express line between the holy cities of Madinah and Makkah in the first quarter of 2018.

A train linking the airport to the city metro is very practical, I had a first hand experience of it in Europe.. a very good project for KSA, they can add special dedicated Taxi services like here in North America, it is also very practical for many, amongst them business people..
