First phase of Makkah project to be ready in four years

MAKKAH: The first phase of a massive project to develop Makkah and the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah will be completed within four years, Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal announced on Wednesday.

“The completion of the first phase will coincide with the completion of the new Haram expansion project,” the governor said while presiding over a meeting of the executive committee of the Development Authority for Makkah and the Holy Sites.

He said the giant Makkah development project would change the face of the holy city by setting up an integrated transport system including trams and ring roads and developing underdeveloped residential districts in various parts of the city.

The meeting discussed executive measures to implement various projects and how to remove the obstacles facing some projects. Prince Khaled said the King Abdullah project would bring about an unprecedented development of Makkah and the holy sites.

More than 7,000 real estate units will be acquired and demolished in Makkah in 2012 to make way for the expansion of the Grand Mosque and the development of the holy city.

“About 3,000 of these new units worth more than SR40 billion will be appropriated as part of the King Abdullah project,” said Mansour Abu Rayyash, chairman of the real estate committee at the Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said another 4,000 houses would be demolished for the construction of the parallel road from the western side of the Grand Mosque. “About 1,300 real estate units will be demolished after their value is evaluated for the construction of the second ring road while the remaining 2,700 houses will be demolished to make way for the first ring road and other development projects,” he said.

Abu Rayyash explained real estate units that would be seized for the second ring road were those lying at the extension of the road joining the Al-Biban area and Al-Kaaki bakeries. “The real estate in this area is very expensive and the value of the houses may range from SR15 billion to SR20 billion,” he said.

Meanwhile, Prince Khaled presided over the signing of an agreement between Al-Balad Al-Amin Co. and Duroub Development Co. for the development of the old path to the holy sites. It is part of the project for the development of the holy sites.

The project includes construction of shopping centers, prayer places, public toilets, medical services, car parks and other support services. “The new project will provide excellent service facilities in Mina and Aziziya and contribute to sustainable development,” said Makkah Mayor Osama Al-Bar, who is also chairman of Al-Balad Al-Amin, adding that the project would cost about SR6 billion. “This is the first joint project between Al-Balad Al-Amin and the private sector,” he said.

Makkah to establish SR 2.4 billion solar energy project

Makkah municipality will establish a mega solar energy project, costing about SR 2.4 billion, to produce about 100 megawatt of electricity to meet the energy requirements of the municipality.

“The project will be established on an area of about two million square meters. About 20 international consortiums consisting of about 100 companies will compete for the execution of the project,” Mayor Osama bin Fadl Al-Bar told business daily Al-Eqtisadiah on Wednesday.

He said the municipality would pay the cost of the project in monthly installments of SR 10 million. “The Ministry of Finance has approved the scheme,” he added.

Al-Bar said under the contract to be signed with it, the winning consortium would decide the location of the area on which the project would be established. “The contractor would buy the piece of land whose ownership would return to the municipality at the end of the contract,” he explained.

The mayor expected the project to save about SR 2.2 billion on the municipality’s general budget for electricity bills. “We have been asking citizens to use solar energy instead of electricity. We should set an example. The government incurs about three times the value of the electricity bill paid by the citizen for each kilowatt of power he consumes. By using solar energy, the government will save a lot of money it used to spend on electricity,” he said.

The mayor said the bids to implement the project would be opened during the first week of 2013. “The offers should have been opened on Saudi National Day but some consortiums asked for more time to further study the project,” he explained.

Al-Bar said the success of project would encourage would encourage other municipalities and government departments to follow suit. “Solar energy will also save the local consumption of oil which is expected to be eight million barrels a day by the year 2030,” he said.

According to municipality sources, this project would be used to satisfy the needs of the municipality for energy while another similar project would light streets and tunnels.

They said the two projects were part of more than 100 projects that a team of municipality specialists had specified to ensure the participation of the private sector in municipal activities.

MAKKAH – Muslims around the world could be setting their watches to a new time soon when the world’s largest clock begins ticking atop a soaring skyscraper in Makkah.

Saudi Arabia hopes the four faces of the new clock perched atop a tower, which is expected to be the world’s second tallest building, will establish Makkah as an alternate time standard to the Greenwich median.

The clock reflects a goal by some Muslims to replace the 126-year-old Universal Time standard – originally called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) – with Makkah Mean Time.

At a conference in Doha in 2008, Muslim clerics and scholars presented “scientific” arguments that Makkah time is the true global meridian. They said that Makkah is the center of the world and that the Greenwich standard was imposed by the West in 1884.

I just read a long spiel by a Saudi on another site about how "spiritual truth" is unchanging - that is, regardless of the objective truth that Israelis individually or as a whole are innocent of many things they are accused of, for her the "spiritual truth" was that the Jews were always guilty. Dude it is opposite.. holy sites are being expanded and glorified... in Saudi Arabia.

It all depends what is holy for you... in India Muslims are not allowed to slaughter cow on Eidul Adha, which is truly wrong..... but no anger on that matter?

Only negativity i see in the project, is that there were 5 star buildings all around Haram, which are being demolished just because, Saudi planning authorities failed to predict future, during last expansion.

May be some Saudi can confirm or perhaps I shall go there and check the situation by my self.
