How could that gurmakh singh count enemies? they were most probably in hundreds so to glorify themeselves and to impress their british officers they hugely exaggerated the numbers. British accepted the account of gurmakh singh without verifying it as it could be used to boost morale of troops.

Details of the Battle of Saragarhi are considered fairly accurate, due to Gurmukh Singh signalling events to Fort Lockhart as they occurred.

• Around 9:00am, around 10,000 Afghans reach the signaling post at Saragarhi.
• Sardar Gurmukh Singh signals to Col. Haughton, situated in Fort Lockhart, that they are under attack.
• Colonel Haughton states he cannot send immediate help to Saragarhi.
• The soldiers decide to fight to the last to prevent the enemy from reaching the forts.
• Bhagwan Singh becomes the first injured and Lal Singh is seriously wounded.
• Soldiers Lal Singh and Jiwa Singh reportedly carry the dead body of Bhagwan Singh back to the inner layer of the post.
• The enemy breaks a portion of the wall of the picket.
• Colonel Haughton signals that he has estimated between 10,000 and 14,000 Pashtuns attacking Saragarhi.
• The leaders of the Afghan forces reportedly make promises to the soldiers to entice them to surrender.
• Reportedly two determined attempts are made to rush open the gate, but are unsuccessful.
• Later, the wall is breached.
• Thereafter, some of the fiercest hand-to-hand fighting occurs.
• In an act of outstanding bravery, Ishar Singh orders his men to fall back into the inner layer, whilst he remains to fight. However, this is breached and all but one of the defending soldiers are killed, along with many of the Pashtuns.
• Gurmukh Singh, who communicated the battle with Col. Haughton, was the last Sikh defender. He is stated to have killed 20 Afghans, the Pashtuns having to set fire to the post to kill him. As he was dying he was said to have yelled repeatedly the Sikh battle-cry "Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal" (Victory belongs to those who recite the name of God with a true heart).

Actually after the Saragarhi fort was attacked the Pashtuns advanced onto a British held fort. They where able to get a good and accurate account.

1)Group Captain Zafar Ali Shah was recipient of Vir Chakra. He was one of first from Indian Air Force to get the award in 1950. He got it for Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. He commanded No.10 Squadron of Indian Air Force in that war.

He was killed in an air accident in the 1960s.

2)Lieutenant General Mohammad Ahmed Zaki (born 20 January 1935, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh) is a retired army general.

Zaki was educated at the Rashtriya Indian Military College, Dehra Dun from 1947 to 1951. He was selected for the National Defence Academy in 1952 and on getting commissioned in the Indian Army, he joined 19 Maratha Light Infantry in 1955. In the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Zaki was wounded in the battle of Thatti Jaimal Singh and was awarded "Vir Chakra" for a conspicuous display of gallantry in the face of the enemy. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, he was in command of 2 Maratha LI (Kali Panchvin) in the Shakargarh area. He has held many important appointments such as Instructor at the Infantry School, Mhow, Brigade Major in Ladakh and Instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

Both brothers have a Vir Chakra for the same feat of shooting down Sabre jets. This is the first time two brothers have received Vir Chakras for the same reason.[1]
