The new Russian torpedo will reportedly be able to reach speed more than 60 knots and hit targets at a range of over 35 miles.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The tests of Russia's advanced deep-water homing torpedo named Futlyar (Fizik-2) will wrap up this year and the Russian Navy will introduce it into service in 2018, a defense industry source told Sputnik on Friday.

"The tests of the newest Futlyar torpedo — an improved Fizik — are being carried out successfully. They are planned to be completed by the end of 2017. The Russian Navy will put it into service in 2018," the source said.

The source added that Futlyar torpedoes had improved systems of homing, remote control and its effective distance had also been increased if to compare with Fizik torpedoes.

According to the publicly available sources, Futlyar would be capable to reach speed more than 60 knots and depth of more than 540 yards and would be able to hit targets at a range of over 35 miles.

MOSCOW, March 13. /TASS/. The crews of nuclear-powered submarines under construction for the Russian Navy will get the submariner’s improved escape gear, Navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said on Monday.

"The crews of nuclear-powered and diesel-electric submarines will be supplied with the submariner’s improved escape gear designated for the personnel’s individual escape from a stricken submarine from depths of up to 220 meters," Dygalo said.

The submariner’s escape gear has undergone operational evaluation at the Research Institute of Rescue Works and Underwater Technologies of the Navy’s Military Training and Research Center, the spokesman said.

"The submariner’s improved escape gear is planned to be supplied to the crews of nuclear-powered strategic and multipurpose submarines that are under construction for the Russian Navy, as well as to the crews of Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines, a series of which comprising six underwater cruisers will be built for the Pacific Fleet," the Navy’s spokesman said.

Simultaneously, there are plans to supply the improved escape gear to the crews of submarines already operational with the Russian submarine force.

The submariner’s escape gear comprises an insulating respiratory system and an escape and immersion suit. It can also be supplied with the PP-2 parachute system to brake the submariner’s surfacing and prevent Caisson’s disease (the decompression sickness).

According to the Navy’s spokesman, the escape equipment will allow working outside a submarine at depths of up to 20 meters.

the Russian sub has a crew of 64 sailors compared to 120 for the USS Illinois. The Russian nuclear-powered subsurface ship is capable of operating at a maximum depth of 600 meters (1968 feet), while the Illinois can dive to a maximum depth of 450 meters (nearly 1480 feet). Although both can travel at comparable speeds, the Yasen class is reported to be more self-sustainable.

Ruslan Pukhov, who heads the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, said that the Yasen-class is also better armed that its American counterpart. The Yasen class can be outfitted with either 32 Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles or 40 Kalibr-PL anti-ship, anti-submarine and land attack cruise missiles.

"the Yasen class is expected to receive sea-based cruise missiles with a range of 5,500 kilometers, double the range of the latest version of the Tomahawk," Gazeta.ru observed.

The Yasen class is expected to become the backbone of the Russian Navy. Severodvinsk, the first Yasen-class sub, entered service in June 2014 and was assigned to Russia's Northern Fleet. The second Yasen-class submarine, dubbed Kazan, will be the first watercraft of the improved Project 885. It is expected to be commissioned in 2018.

Four more Yasen-class subs are currently under construction, with the sixth Project 885 watercraft, called Perm, laid down in July 2016. A total of six updated Yasen-class submarines are due to join the Russian Navy by 2020.

The laying down of Russia’s fourth Aleksandrit-class (Project 12700) coastal minesweeper is planned for April, navy spokesman Capt. 1st Rank Igor Dygalo said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The new vessel will be named after Vladimir Yemelyanov, a renowned Soviet shipbuilding industry figure who died in 2015, according to Dygalo.

"The laying down of the fourth Project 12700 coastal minesweeper will take place in the last third of April at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard in St. Petersburg as part of the state military shipbuilding program," Dygalo told reporters.

The first Alexandrit-class vessel, Aleksandr Obukhov, is already in service with the Russian navy.

Georgiy Kurbatov, the second vessel of its class, is set be launched this year, while the third Project 12700 vessel, Ivan Antonov, was laid down in January and is expected to be launched next year.

In December, the Russian navy said it had contracted for another seven Alexandrit-class coastal minesweepers on top of the four ordered earlier, with plans for a total of over 40 vessels to be commissioned with the navy in the longer term.

Project 12700 vessels are designed to detect and destroy mines in waters around naval bases. The minesweepers have a full displacement of 890 tonnes, measure 61 meters (200 feet) in length and 10 meters in width. The hull is a monolithic fiberglass structure, which is stronger and more durable than steel frame hulls. The ship uses various types of mine trawls as well as remotely controlled unmanned underwater vehicles to destroy mines.
