Mi-17/171 Hip - Update

An Mi-171 was taking off carrying 6 rocket launchers. It is one of the over 100 Russian-made Mi-17/171s (serial numbers LH917xx, 927xx, 937xx, 947xx, 957xx, 967xx, 987xx, 997xx) which represent the majority of medium transport helicopters in service with PLA Army Aviation (LH). In order to replace the obsolete Z-5/Mi-4, 24 Mi-17s were initially purchased in 1991 following the US government's refusal to sell more S-70Cs. Since then another 35 improved Mi-171s were purchased in 1995. Among them, some were modified by adding IFF, ASO-2V chaff/flare dispensers and external pylons for carrying up to six bombs, fuel tanks, or rocket launchers. Some are also modified to lay mines or to carry paratroopers. One Mi-171 was modified to carry 8 TY-90 IR-guided AAMs possibly for the Z-10 program. Recently some Mi-17/171s have been upgraded with a pair of communication antennas on top of and beneath the boom. However unlike the similar type in service with Russian Army (Mi-8TV), these locally modified Mi-171s appear to lack cockpit armor plates, nose machine gun, engine exhaust IR suppressors. Its cruise speed is 230km and range is 1,000km. Apparently this cheap, robust and versatile helicopter has become the backbone of LH. A small number of Mi-171s modified with a search light, an IRST turret also entered the service with PLAAF for SAR missions (serial # 30x7x). A new batch of Mi-171 (M-171E?) was imported in 2006 by the Army (S/N B46xx, 927xx, LH987xx, 997xx, 9107xx) as well as the Air Force (S/N 999xx) which has a similar configuration (solid nose and loading ramp) as Mi-17V5 (see below). A few VIP model were also imported (with old Mi-17 style rear doors). Some Mi-171s were installed with an IR jammer (SOEP-V1A?) which works together with the flare dispenser to protect the aircraft from MANPADS attacks. One Mi-171 was modified in 2008 to have two antennas installed on top of the external pylons. These mushroom shaped antennas may serve for the communication (relay) purposes. The latest image (September 2011) suggested that one Mi-171 might have been installed with a retractable battlefield surveillance radar similar to that onboard French AS-532 Horizon battlefield surveillance helicopter.

IMO we should convince the chinese to sell us the Mi-17s which are now being mass produced in china!

Before USA used us for destroy Rooooossss in Afghanistan!!
Now Russia will use us for destroy America in Afghanistan!!

We have to find balance in relations. With changing geopolitical environment we should have to built close ties with Russian Federation in civil and military levels. We also need Russian support to get into SCO. Just imagin if you were in SCO then you got support of all members of SCO against any military offense of US. We have to think for the strategic regional development.

That's a good progress in constructing ties with RF so we should consider their offer with hope of further military technology deals.

Russian Tech is ok, however even European countries like Finland, Swedan, Italy has better weapons then Russia,

This is typical cold war era propaganda. Upon evaluation many Soviet systems were found to be superior to anything the west had. Russia has had a number of systems that were years ahead of their time. For example the supercavitating VA-111 with a 370km/h speed puts everything NATO operates to shame. The countries you listed also have 'nitch' technologies that are good but overall their weapons are not more advanced and in fact countries such as Sweden relies on many foreign systems in their weapons, for example, the Grippen has more foreign parts than an elaborate chop shop. Although Italy does have some nice light combat trucks and Finland, well Finland can probably built better snow plows

Chinese weaponry is advancing wouldn't be surprised in 5-10 years China surpasses Russia in weaponry quality, Russia is simply living off the inheritance of the Soviet Union.

Did you bother doing any research before you made this comment? There are countless systems that have been introduced after 1991 or recently have been introduced, many more systems are under development. Russia has created new submarines, ships (frigates, corvettes ect), APC's, small arms, helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, a variety of short and long range SAMS, ect, ect, ect... and if you take something such as the SU-34 you will see that many new systems were developed for the aircraft--systems include radar, engines, and various electronic warfare equipment.

Russia will not sell anything that it hasn't sold to India before as a better version.
Till India has the Russians by the cojonies in terms of defense investments.
Sit back and enjoy the little tidbits.

Wrong,

Wasn't it Pakistan on 1st to get military technology in south Asia from US? And what happened then?
Pakistan couldn't hold this supplier in hand and India attracted and left us with empty clapping.

Why don't we change ourselves with changing strategic ground but waiting till somebody come and request us "Please consider us for your mighty needs" and waiting when India quit deals with RF! It’s not going to happen. We should make our own position if not equal to India then not less than India in Russian arm market, military & strategic relations.

these 10 Mi-17s were already on order - nothing new in this so called 'enhancement' of relations - if there is enhancement of relations then more than just 'un-armed' helos should be offereed. no fire-no smoke!

If you were in place of Russia, Did you offer armed technology at this stage? Surely NOT. They are not going to offer us AC carrier or Project 941 Typhoon (Akula class) submarine to enhance better understanding so first we should strengthen & move up ties on level where they feel no hesitation to offer something better than MI-17 ARMED.

Hi, there is no way Russia will sell Pakistan heavy offensive weapons, simply no way. The reason is, they will upset the large sales to India. It is basic economics.

Besides India is buying close to 140 brand new Mi-17s. This dwarfs Pakistan's potential sale of 10.

India to buy more Mi-17 military helos

May be you will get something from my post no 57!

Mi-17 is good heli

But i don't think Russia will sell any Attack Heli's or any weapon of offensive capabilities to pak beside transport heli and civilian sukhoi super jet 100.

We are fine with 30-40 Mi 17 , It serves the purpose we need these helicopters for

The role for this plane ideally is for providing soldiers , and civilians supplies at least for time being and that is role we are happy with for the helicopters , 40-50 of these helicopters would be sufficient to deal with floods and other rescue missions

These helicopters are sufficient for attack role , for Pakistan army

China_Z-9-attack-helicopter.jpg

China makes unlimited amount of these attack helicopters and for standard basic air support these are ideal to get Pakistan started in decent attack helicopters

But Pakistan now needs to move away from Old Mi-17s, we need to buy new models now.

A equipment is only old as the spare parts supply , and Mi 17 are a perfect transport machine ideal for Pakistan as it can carry 8-12 people , and tones of supplies

Also the Chinese z-9w are ideal four standard helicopter (attack) mode for our army instead of chasing dreams of Apache or Super Cobras we should just induct 100 Z-9 for army first and then focus on special purchases like Apache or Super Cobras

We need to cover the basics first

It doesn't seem troll thread.. but few posters are trolling..
