Well can't blame the Russians. They have a lot of strategic interest in both Iran and Syria. Weapon sales is just a small part of it. While Iran may be more independent in thinking compared to Syria, there are a lot of opportunity it offers:

1- Doesn't have a competitor in the name of USA or now as we know, Europe. So a big potential market with a very stable level of per capita income.

2- Iran is energy rich in terms of oil and gas. A country that has such resources if friendly to Moscow means, Asia remains to some extent in Russian influence if not backyard-rule.

3- Iran's link to the Arabian Sea and its land connection to Russia offers Moscow the "warm water port" factor that they've been hungering for the last 4 decades. Trade and business opportunity will quadruple if the alternate transport corridor gets cleared. I honestly wish that India-Iran-Russia transport corridor opens up as an alternate to the expensive Suez Canal. All 3 nations will benefit massively.

But is the Bear willing to militarily fight entire NATO brigade right now and weaken all the economic growth it is enjoying as a BRICS nation? European Union is already in crisis and has nothing to lose, compared to Russia which has seen growth after 10-15 years of serious chaos of 90s.
