What's new

Russia invites Pakistan to invest in Sukhoi Jetliner program.

Agreed, but those purchases are becoming less and less as China fast approaches the same level of military technology as that of Russia and America. It's virtually negligible now. If Pakistan is serious about becoming an advanced military power, all the resources that we need are already there via China. We don't really need to look to Russia, America or anyone else. We need to make use of our existing possibilities. Russia is not relevant to us in this regard.
Agreed, still, Russia might have valuable tech to share, and Pakistan should look into it before contemplating investments, with nothing to lose and if there is something potent to gain why not.. China is the best avenue for Pakistan, but other avenues should also be explored, mostly tech-wise..

That's not true at all. China needs at least 1.0 - 1.5 decades to reach where Russia is today and the reason is that reverse engineering can only take you so far. To develope something revolutionary, a country needs to invest in fundamental research in addition to applied research and China is still behind the developed countries so still a long way for China to reach there. Russia, like USA and other developed nations of west, is a primary source of technology/R&D so why should we rely on secondary or tertiary sources only.
While we invest in all three programs to get techs from all. Being a businessman, I know that it is not a good idea to put all the eggs in one basket even if it is made of gold.

Big surprise Russia offering Pakistan co- share in Sukhoi Jetliner program. 2017 seems to be a good year for Pakistan

Yes it will be great, still, considering how Russia deals with its JV partners; it wants them to invest in new developments and research which is good for both, but it is almost out of the question that they will give ToT of their own existing tech.. And yes again, anything that Pakistan can get its hands on will be a step forward to designing its own 5th G fighter plane.. Now it will depend as always on the budget and the amounts asked for vs the tech from the R&D to be acquired..

That is where smart diplomacy comes into play. Pakistan is in a position to make its situation very clear and still offer Russia dividends in some other strategic areas like trade & CPEC, cooperation in Afghanistan etc so Russia will be more than compensated. Furthermore, Pakistan and Russia see more eye to eye on global political issues vis-a-vis the USA and the chasm in the relations will narrow over time due to several reasons. Thus Pak-Russia cooperation on this front helps Pakistan tremendously.

It is akin to India investing money in BRAHMOS project and learning and gaining knowledge from this experience of joint venture.

Hi,

I would not buy a russian passenger aircraft---. I will stick with Boeing or air bus.
If it clears the necessary certifications from agencies like FAA you should be safe to fly in them no matter who makes them.

The articles starts off with Sukhoi Jetliner, then calls it Sukhoi super jet only to make it sukhoi super fighter and calling it a fofth generation fighter plane. No need to comment on its credibility further. This should be taken with a pinch of salt!

We would be far better off investing in J-20 & J-31. It's good that we have cordial relations with Russia but it should be left at that. The Russians can't really benefit us.
we can acquired sam tec and RADARS from Russia but not jet

That's not true at all. China needs at least 2 - 3 decades to reach where Russia is today and the reason is that reverse engineering can only take you so far. To develope something revolutionary, a country needs to invest in fundamental research in addition to applied research and China is still in a state of infancy vis-a-vis developed countries so still a long way for China to reach there. Russia, like USA and other developed nations of west, is a primary source of technology/R&D so why should we rely on secondary or tertiary sources only.

Prove it to me. Don't forget your old sincere friend when you make new friend. Russia is looking for a new substitute for India to be milk-cow, cause India already bled white. I hope you don't fit in that role. Making friends and buying weapon from Russia is quite ok, just don't need to drag China in.

This is old news basically it refers to the stealth version of SU-35 which Russia is working on. Russia is offering us many things now it depends on us which we want to pursue.
