Russia, India sign contract to supply S-400 missile defense system – senior official

. .
Initial order is for 5 full scale regiments (each full scale regiment has 4 battallions each with 4 fire units per battllion) i.e 20 battllions and 80 fire units. As oppossed to common belief, the S-400 has been under review intially by India since 2012, Indian observers had been invited quite a few time for witness of trials and then early disucssions began.

Russia can deliver roughly 1 regimental set of 2 battlions per year, mean while production is being increased. Early deliveries of fire units should begin late 2018 or early 2019.

Perhaps another 7 regiments will be ordered under make in India under discussions.

The S-400 is a highly mobile system and fire units can be quickly relocated/airlifted by C-17s, IL-76s, C-130Js to active theaters.

Russian official has refused that the deal has been signed.

Most probably Rao Indrejit meant that both the sides have agreed upon the terms and conditions.

April 27 /TASS/. A contract for delivering the Triumph S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems to India is not yet concluded, Sergey Chemezov, director-general of the Rostec State Corporation (with which the Oboronexport arms trading firm is affiliated), told journalists on Wednesday.

"The contract has not yet been signed," Chemezov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, some Indian media outlets reported with reference to the Indian defense minister that the contract for delivery of Russian S-400 systems had already been signed.

@PARIKRAMA and @Abingdonboy
Parik , try dig out if there is anything to be celebrated.

The only news to be celebrated is that Russians will do the first flight of the Phase 2 engine which will be 20% improved performance characteristics than the present one in late 2017.
This means one of the biggest problem between India and Russia on FGFA will start getting resolved .Further Later this year our team will be taking a close look at one of the prototypes.
I hope things go on well on this, because untill 2030, we won't have any other viable 5th gen option.

. .
No substantial agreements would be signed with Russia under a BJP regime. Forget about FGFA or S-400s for at least another 3 years. If Modi/BJP comes back to power again in 2019 then forget until 2024 or later or never (as we are seeing Congress mukt Bharat..)
