Row in Oz as woman asked to remove veil at interview

I am in great favour of banning Burqa anywhere in the world wherever the risk factor of terrorism is involved. I wouldn't mind if they ban burqa all over the world. But here its not burqa and i am talking about Hijab. I have always raised my voice over the banning of Hijab which is a short piece of cloth.

So looking at this picture, why would any one ask the other person to remove hijab.. Its plain stupid.. Its like wearing a cap or a hat. While based on western culture, you dont wear a hat inside work place, but its not such a big thing. Either the report is confused between a hijab and a veil, or the interviewer was one hell of an idiot

same question i raised when they banned Hijab in France. What kind of security problems are invovled in this hijab. You can clearly see the face of a women, her hands are naked, her whole body is visible incase a person thinks she is wearing suicide jacket underneath her clothes/hijab

It was banned to discriminate Muslims and not for the sake of freedom of speech as i am failed to understand how can such a small piece of cloth create security issues. Still i have no complaints as since childhood i have been saying that "Follow the rule of the land" and if you have complaints with it, go back home or reside in a country where you have freedom to practice your religion and after France banned Haijab, Muslims living in france must know if they want to be practicing Muslims, they must leave the country or "Do as the romans do"

Had they banned Burqa, i would have supported this decision and was understandable, but Hijaab - never

I completly agree with you in this. If hijaab is to ban they have to ban this too

. .
And therefore we should develop our own education system in such a way that they want to come to study in our univeristies and not the way it is now.

well said, inshallah one day :)

no actually i don't care if they ban this dress of nun's or burqa or anything that covers your face.

I have a problem for banning hijab

The sad truth is that most students who go there go with an intention of migrating to these countries and not for the purpose of education. A big percentage of these students go there for courses such as hairdressing and hospitality management to take advantage of their immigration policies.

I personally know a family from India who went through a lot of trouble to send their son to New Zealand in a hospitality management course with the intention that he would first settle there and then gradually take the whole family there. I found it very amusing since the kid was a bright hardworking type who would had a bright future within India itself.

.
Its remove her FACE VEIL which are over and above religious requirements, not the hair veil like Catholic nuns which has been claimed to be the source of the "inspiration".

well it is becoming hard to practice our religion in west day by day. What can i say here, if i a women wishes to wear hijab, that should be her own choice. She should not be forced to wear or take it off.

I still did not understand one thing. Did she went there for a work/job (that we usually do by hands) or for modelling where they wanted to see her look? Hijab still shows your entire body except your hairs so i don't understand why west is becoming so narrow minded nowadays. In order to promote freedom they are continuasly snatching the freedom of Muslims :D - well its australia so not part of europe but everywhere its same :)

I wonder if one day West will ban wearing dress in the name of freedom or equal rights opportunity. There are some clothes that only rich peoples can afford to buy, so ban the clothes to avoid discrimination :)

And my statement says that they will come to the universaties so that their parents could follow them. But first thing first, a standard of these Hijabs must be set as to how much of the face is to be covered. can we atleast do this.

In Canada, living in Ontario it is confusing for nonMulsims to see covering from head to sides to total coverage, we must decide as to how much face need to be covered as per sunna. canada is a society of very respecable folks and we must not by our actions loose their respect for our failures to conclude about standards of true Islamic values

when visiting holy Mecca women are required not to cover the whole face, just head and the sides of the face.

No one knows how much money was paid to this women for the burqa advertisaement.
This is how it works today...
There were no burqa women in past and now they want job?
The employer did a good job calling the world media and explaining her trouble... simply refusing the job was certainly not enough.

BTW... i wonder if burqa women can get any job any where in the world???

if it was burqa then yes, she should have taken it off. if it was hijab, i dont see the justification .

Hi,

Sir---you missed it totally---Hijab is not an issue---Veil is---. Hijab is not veil---. Veil is Veil.

It is the personal belief of the australians that you have to see the person's face and eyes to judge them---judge their character.

It is their country---they make the decisions to pick and chose---.

It was her choice to wear the Hijab and she has every right to do so but it is the employers right to refuse you a job. Seems like this woman is another attention seeker. If she can't understand the employer/employee relationship then she is not ready for a job in the real world yet.

if it was burqa then yes, she should have taken it off. if it was hijab, i dont see the justification .

Hi,

You children need to have a better understanding fo the language and what you are speaking---a Hijab is NOT a VEIL---Hijab is different than a Veil---. The issue is with the Veil---and justifiably so---.

If I had a business in pakistan---I would not hire any female wearing a Veil at work.

There are many such stories this is just the tip of the iceberg. I live in Melbourne the most multicultured city in all off OZ, but the movement here is gaining steam to ban the veil - not the HIJAB, having said that the Hijab is also getting flack for a lot of reasons some listed below:

Some clippings from the article above;

"I don't want sympathy
Sarah Shehata, 21, Melbourne, Arab
It's like being an outcast. It's terrorising. I shouldn't have to wake up every morning thinking about how I am going to respond to verbal or physical abuse. I shouldn't have to walk around the streets thinking that my headscarf makes me a target, or that when someone looks at me it's because they resent my religion. Even when people smile at me, I shouldn't have to think it's for sympathy. I don't want sympathy. I don't want to feel terrified. I don't want to be hated for choosing something that makes me happy. I just want to fit in regardless of how I present myself.

Australia is their country
Sahar Elsemary, 48, Sydney, Egyptian
At times, living in Australia as a Muslim is rewarding. At other times it is very difficult. I feel stressed going to certain suburbs or states. I worry that some ignorant person will swear at me for being a Muslim or pull my scarf off. This happened to me once when I was leading a tour in Lakemba. A man stopped me in the middle of the road and called me a terrorist and demanded that I go back where I came from. I tell my children it's just a small percentage of Australians who are ignorant and racist. That Australia is their country and that they should prove it to others that being a Muslim is an advantage.

I have being told that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim
Faeeza Jawaid, Melbourne, Pakistani
I have being told that the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim. This was in response to me saying that there is good and bad in every cultural or ethnic group and that the majority of Muslims are peace loving. I feel as if I need to constantly and actively denounce acts of terrorism because if I didn't the wider community will believe that I condone these heinous acts. It's saddening because this is not expected of our non-Muslim fellow countrymen. It indicates that Australian Muslims are somehow different to the rest of the community. I also feel very lucky to be an Australian. I happen to be surrounded by educated people who are fully aware that the majority of Muslims all over the world just want to get on with their lives peacefully"

you have the good and bad but at the end of the day, issues still persist, and no middle ground that can be agreed upon on this subject.

.
I think it was a Hijab in which case i think doctor was wrong however if it was a burqa then she definitely should have removed it.
seems a case of Burkha :"Under traditional Islamic view, a woman cannot show her face to any man except her husband and male relatives,"

It's a 7 year old thread people i am sure most of the people you guys are quoting aren't even active anymore.
