Rizvi: India to sell old-fashioned weapons to Bangladesh through defence pact

Bangladesh’s defence would be an extension of Indian defence system if the agreement is inked as it would create a sort of obedience, said Rizvi

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that India wants to sell archaic weapons to Bangladesh through the proposed 25-year defence pact.

Referring to a statement by one of India’s former military chiefs, Rizvi said that most of the weapons India would provide were old-fashioned and far from the standards of modern weaponry equipped with the latest technology.

He made the claim during a press conference held at BNPs Nayapaltan headquarters on Friday afternoon.

The BNP leader said: “It is matter of great confusion what type ordnance would India, a military hardware importing country, export to Bangladesh.”

“Bangladesh’s defence would be an extension of the Indian defence system if the agreement is inked, as it would create a sort of obedience,” Rizvi added.

“India has proposed a $500 million in line of credit to Bangladesh to purchase their military equipment, which means Bangladesh will have an obligation to spend a huge amount to purchase their military hardware.”

Bangladeshi people have started realising that India has hidden motives behind the deal, Rizvi added.

Media reports suggest that India and Bangladesh are going to sign a defence cooperation agreement, including the purchase of military equipment from India, during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi in April.

The senior BNP leader also called upon the government to make around 50 other “secretly” signed treaties with India public.

There wont be any solid defence pact. It is simply not a feasible option for Hasina to walk against the military, who is a very key stakeholder to her reign to power. Its true that she is in deep water and will face extreme challenges to sort this matter out. At best, MoUs or purchase equipment only for Coast Guard, which are a neglected sector. In that way, all parties including China would be happy.

I dont think our military would be to bothered if we get guns, speed boats, training programs, joint ops etc. through the "pact" that everyone is so obsessed about.

Those arent old fashioned weapons. They are currently what India produces! LOL! You are getting their latest ones.
If you want latest weapons from india you might need pockets big

Never the less India produces Nuclear Submarines to AESA Radars

Long range SAM's to Sophisticated avionics and Jammers.

MBRL to 155mm Artillery and APV

Every single weapon India produces is an amalgamation of imported parts and local welded metal put together or assembled.

Local Sophistication? How?

You simply can't say non-factual things just because they sound nice or fill Indians with pride.

Your signature fighter program (LCA) as well as main battle tank (Arjun) are both considered failures by your own military. The Kaveri jet engine program is a dismal failure after two decades and Billions in investments. So are all the others.

The nuclear sub is not even ready for service (in sea trials) after half a decade even after all sorts of ToT from Russia. God save the sailors in it.

India is the world's largest weapons importer because of political corruption.

These are all fact.

Bangladesh is becoming hyper active to gain India's attention. Bangladesh is already buying weapons from china and they can continue do so. India did not take bangladesh's bait of using china card and now so called defence pact is being thrown around to squeeze more concessions. Defence acquisitions will always be a open tender process and the best will get the contract. No need to get worked over it.

dude , bangladesh is completely surrounded by India. Other than myanmar there is now where they can use all these advanced equipment. More than buying the equipment its the maintenance cost that will be high.

China card? This term is new for us.We never blackmailed India referring China or anything. It is India, which is getting jealous by Chinese involvement in BD.Our economic and defence partnership with China is very old and normal and, it is getting momentum by now.BD never said India should invest in BD or sell weapon to us,otherwise we will go to China. It is India, who unnecessarily trying to sabotage BD-China relation and trying to forcefully shove defence equipment to reluctant BD.Indian are welcome in economic and security co-operation with BD,If you can outshine China in these sectors,no problem for us.And for defence, India should not get any trouble of supplying anything to BD. I failed to see how we are using socalled 'China card' to extract something from India? It is actually opposite. We want minimal involvement of India in BD.

A majority of the Indian trolls here using the 'smoke and mirrors' thing to mislead us.

Bangladeshis have no desire to sign any sort of pact (much less a defense pact) with India. In fact its the last thing we want.

I will accept to Bangladesh concerns. Why should Bangladesh accept our weapons when our own armed forces doesn't show confidence. Let us make a world class millitants industrial complex, they will only come and ask.
On contrary we can persuade Bangladesh for a treaty to allow our armed forces across their Land in a case of emergency , of course at a price....

Bangladesh is getting ambitious to be a regional power... We should treat them as equal
I did should respect it and direct them to be a responsible power also..

Long live indo-bangla friendship.
