NEW DELHI: There has been a rise in resignations and applications seeking voluntary retirements from paramilitary forces last year, with BSF and CRPF topping the chart, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday. There was no specific study to ascertain reasons for voluntary retirement and resignation, Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said in a written reply.

There have been 151 voluntary retirements and resignations of gazetted officers in 2016 compared to 117 in 2015.

The figure for subordinate officers had almost doubled for the same period. There were 1,400 resignations and voluntary retirements in 2016 whereas the figure stood at 707 in 2015.


For other ranks, the figure stood at 7,415 in 2016 which is more than double of 3,052 that was reported in 2015.

In last three years till January 15 this year, more than 20,000 personnel have sought voluntary retirement and resignation from six paramilitary forces.

Out of this CRPF tops the list with 7,166 personnel having resigned or sought voluntary retirement followed by BSF with 6,959, CISF 2,823, ITBP 1,971, SSB 941 and Assam Rifles 812.

In the past 3 years the size of BSF was 245,000-250,000 & CRPF 290,000-295,0000.
Which means resignation rate only 0.85/100 for CRPF & 0.95/100 for BSF personnel.

Actually you are right, Indian Army suicides rates are lower than all other armies which reveal data:
USA, Israel, Canada, France, UK, Australia, Turkey, Japan, Korea etc.

And most of these armies have seen extensive combat both abroad and home and then there are those ARMIES, which can take pride in ZERO suicides.

Suicide is not a problem of Indian army only.Also it's lesser in compared to other modern armies although having half of size..
If you compare by number of active personal & reserved the retirement rate is very low..

There are suicides in every army because soldiers are human too, sometimes problems overwhelm people and they take drastic decisions.
It's just that some armies reveal suicide numbers and some don't.

India has huge paramilitary force. And if there are VRS it's not a problem. They will give chance to new ones.

There is rise because there are so many opportunities other than forces and even on road projects forigen companies or countries dont bring their men here for work

Still, reasons are unknown but hope to read about the same in details. The system should see it coming and must compile the reasons stated by the persons seeking resignation and through other observations/evaluations as it is impossible that serving personnel sought resignation without any plausible explanation which only need compilation of record to share for study and resolution except few unavoidable circumstances.
