Religious parties offer blood money to Taseer’s family - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

KARACHI: Religious parties representing the Barelvi school of thought on Tuesday announced that they would challenge the Islamabad High Court decision to uphold the death sentence awarded to Mumtaz Qadri, who was convicted of killing former Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

They also offered to pay blood money to the deceased governor’s family for the acquittal of the self-confessed killer.

Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, leaders of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan, the Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, the Pakistan Sunni Tehreek and the Pakistan Sunni Alliance claimed that the government in the name of an operation against terrorism was treating all tolerant and non-violent religious circles in a same way.

“The government is responsible for creating challenges which ultimately increase its own difficulties,” said Shabbir Abu Talib of the JUP.

“Parties representing the Ahle Sunnat school of thought do not want to trigger any chaos or violence. We are ready for a healthy debate on the Mumtaz Qadri issue.”

He said parties of their school of thought had decided to challenge the judgement against Qadri in the Supreme Court and for that meetings with legal experts and senior lawyers were being held.

“We have a key case of Raymond Davis fresh in our memory. The political leadership of the country compromised national security, exploiting the provision in Islam to set that killer [Raymond Davis] free. We are ready to pay much more Khoonbaha (blood money) to the family of Salman Taseer [for Qadri’s release],” said Mr Talib.

The Islamabad High Court on Monday acquitted Qadri of charges of terrorism, but upheld his conviction under the Pakistan Penal Code.

Mumtaz Qadri, Mr Taseer’s gunman and former Punjab police elite force commando, assassinated Salman Taseer in Kohsar market in Islamabad on Jan 4, 2011.

Angry over conviction of Qadri under the penal code, the religious parties hinted at taking it to the streets for his release.

“We will now hold protest demonstrations on Friday,” said Mr Talib. “Our struggle is under democratic norms and will remain peaceful. We are not going to challenge the writ of the state in the name of protest. In Karachi the main Friday protest will be organised at the Numaish traffic intersection.”

He said parties representing the Ahle Sunnat school of thought had called a joint meeting on Saturday to prepare a common strategy for their cause.

They are lucky I'm not Pakistan's leader. I would have these idiots arrested, quartered and THEN executed publicly for treason. Pakistan is filled with fools who support these dumbasses, and I'm sick of it. If the Pakistani public is too stupid to actually think for themselves, and support these barbarians, then Pakistan is already a dead nation. Religious parties need to be banned. If they want to field candidates, or participate in politics, they should form secular parties to represent them.

They use democracy when it suits them, but speak against it almost on a daily basis; it sickens me that they're continued to be tolerated for fear of retaliation, even if I can understand the reasoning. Even though they expressed public support for Pakistan's enemies, they continue to get a free pass, because they have the ability to kill hundreds in minutes, and plunge the country into a deeper civil war.

[edit]: Never have I been as angry towards Pakistan as I have now. If the government doesn't do something soon, I will change my opinion to supporting a military leader instead. If GoP doesn't do something soon, it will be clear that Pakistan is not ready for democracy.

I demand the death penalty of qadir.
As an Indian, taseer did tavleen Singh and left behind a Hindu kid. So I claim my stake in avenging him.

@That Guy
You said the same thing as I was thinking. These guys should be arrested at the least. I hope that the kidnapped son does not become a factor in this. The family can be forced by that.

Even they offer blood of one billion people, this man should be hanged and I would suggest to hang him in public so that every one should learn from it. Also, we should create a religious department to to make sure that only well educated and bright minded people be allowed as religious leader in society.

What was the point of forming a nation for the benefit of one particular religion? Un-secularism is a logical conclusion of that exercise.

The majority of Pakistanis want the country to be an islamic republic, and hate the concept of secularism. And it is a human failing, that most people who follow a religion would want special priviledges for that religion. That is why countries should be formed on the principle of secularism, so that even a minority of one can feel that the country is as much his as others'. But when you form a country for the benefit of a particular religion, and do not put any provisions in the constitution for secularism, there is no way you will get secularism in a country where one religion overwhelmingly predominates. If the USA did not have secularism enshrined in the constitution (including the amendments), sooner or later the dominant religion (protestantism) would have become influential on affairs of the state, and congress would have passed laws helping it and hindering other religions. Ditto with India and hinduism.

It was a mistake to form a country solely for the benefit of one religion. I know it would sound unpleasant to Pakistanis, but that's the fact.

If they wanted a 'healthy debate' (not sure what the ultra-religious mean there) the terrorist Qadri shouldn't have killed Mr Salman Taseer first merely for saying that blasphemy law is being abused. Whats the point of carrying the banner of "Islam is a religion of peace" after blowing up earlier seriously? There's no time for any sane activities, long-delayed death punishment awaits the killer. Surely, the Pakistani nation will carry his funeral, chant 'Qadri Zindabad' and declare him Shaheed hero after he's hanged, that much I am always certain for a mass majority of my countrymen. Since well all of God's viceroys have approved of the former Governor's assassination and assured the killer of a place in the high heavens. And, I am not sure why does a pious God fearing (no pun intended) Muslim like Qadri fears death at all, he should beg for death seeing how he will have a far better than the pathetic life he ever had in this world, not delaying it by appeals and protest.

so in nutshell it means that once again a killer will go scot free in pakistan after paying the "blood money"

Where does the concept of blood money arise ?

On what basis they can be arrested? They have just spoken about blood money and that is legit as far as I know.

It wasn't to benefit one religion only, rather it was made so Muslims of the subcontinent could practice freely, with other religious groups also having a place to call home, but mainly for Muslims. That's not the sake thing as being only for one religion.

Yes if that would have been this easy WOW
Things are never was.
