Portugal’s Parliament Recognizes the Armenian Genocide

26 April 2019

LISBON – The Parliament of Portugal has voted for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, Bedo Demirdjian, Adviser of Artsakh Republic’s Permanent Representation to the Middle East, said in a Facebook post.

The Assembly of the Republic today voted to express sorrow for the victims of the Armenian genocide of 1915, thus preserving memory as an essential element for reconciliation between peoples and for the defense of the fundamental values of humanity, according to Diário de Notícias.

According to the text of the resolution, it is on 24 April that “the outbreak of massacres against the Armenian population is marked annually, since it was at that time in 1915 that the Ottoman authorities arrested and executed 250 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople under orders of the government of the ‘Young Turks’ “.

“In the years during and after World War I it is estimated that between 800,000 and 1,5 million people were killed as a result of the genocide,” the vote said, adding that “the systematic extermination by the Ottoman authorities directed at the Armenian minority in its territory is considered by the international community of historians as the first genocide of the twentieth century. ”

According to the text of the vote, the main organizers of the genocide were sentenced to death or imprisonment for their crimes in Ottoman military courts (1919-2020), “yet the sentences of these tribunals have never been enforced.”

“This evocation is a lesson for our time, because, given the current level of nationalism, xenophobia and intolerance worldwide, it is essential to remember the abyss of the past. It is also through the culture of memory that the Assembly is commitment to upholding human rights and underlining the importance of strengthening dialogue among peoples, religions, cultures and civilizations, “the authors write.

. . .
Armenian genocide should be remembered. Even the US acknowledges the massacre of the Native Americans and has tried to make up for it, Turkey should do the same.

. .
The Armenian genocide has been debunked multiple times by an American Professor of History, Justin McCarthy. He even appeared before the House Committee on International Relations in 1996 and testified to the fact that no genocide(intent by the govt) took place. There was a Russian backed insurgency of Armenians and the only deaths (600,000 Armenians and 1 million Turk Muslims) that are verifiable are the result of that war of insurgency. Genocide is a stretch and frankly BS.

This is just more propaganda against the last muslim empire. More justification being manufactured after the fact for World War 1 and subsequent disbanding of the Ottoman empire(one of the main objectives of WW1) and of course, the Balfour declaration.

Screw you Christiano Ronaldo!

We are really tired of this nonsense...

The only reason why the Armenians make a deal is due to their large diaspora it's the only thing that united them if everyone stops comemrating Armenia would become irrelevant it's is just a land locked country depending on Russia while surrounded by Azerbaijan and Turkey

Turks, too, spend millions on lobbying in various Western countries against Armenian Genocide proposal.

I think they care.

Look guys,
What make us angry is that the governments try to decide what happened back then for the sake of populism and Armenian diaspora voters.

We offer ;

- Open Turkish, Armenian, Russian or other 3rd party state archieves. We already unveiled all archieve to public.
- Establish a council of historians to search and study on it.
- Let the independent historians and researchers decide what happened with all the evidences.

But interestingly Armenians don't want to do that, you now why?

- Using this card and playing victim is easier and more effective.
- They, too, know that they are not innocent.
- Fear of proving wrong of their claims, specially these exaggerated numbers.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

More and more countries are willing to risk Sultan's ire and recognise Armenian Genocide. Wasn't Erdogan supposed to make Turkey strong in the eyes of world? Doesn't seem to be happening.

Who will commemorate the genocide of Circassians and Crimean Tatars by Russians, Armenia’s biggest supporter?

Memorials, outrage, le suis charlie, all these are only for victims who are not Not Muslims.

Who will commemorate the deaths of millions of Turks and Pakistanis, and other Muslims?

Russians, Armenia’s biggest supporter
The thing I can't see clearly is relations between Russia and Turkey, they both try to use each other against US, yet they both never hesitate to attack each other's very core interest, their love and hate relationship is beyond comprehension.

Ah "genocide". The way of morally bullying countries in the 21st century. I dont seem to recall Portugal ever apologising for the millions of slaves it carried over to the Americas and systematically worked many of them to death for its own financial gain. Has it ever apologised for the Goa Inquisition?

The point isnt that they should apologise. Their apology and "recognition" does not even matter today as most countries have baggage and it would bring little tangible change to the lives of Afro-Brazilians and others. However in the same pattern bullying Turkey for what happened during a war time to a people, large members of whom were collaborating with an outside force, is ridiculous and pretentious at best and morally bankrupt at worst.

Not a genocide but a civil war.

Thank God my ancestors fought the Armenians or i would not be here today. Turkey most likely would have been destroyed and partitioned for good. Either my people would be killed or exiled.

Also kick the armenians out of Turkey majority of them are all illegal immigrants and terrorist supporters.
