FPGA is just for prototyping and testing. ASIC is cheaper for industrial scale applications.You don't need to get chip fabricated. A FPGA will do. I have seen lots of students do that in US and in India. Besides, you do not need huge amount of electricity to run that.

When we need millions of identical chips, ASIC chips are economical.
