China’s shrimp farmers ‘terrified’ as deadly virus threatens to destroy lucrative seafood industry
  • The virus, known as Decapod iridescent virus 1, has infected about a quarter of the shrimp farms in Guangdong province, the heart of production in China
  • It is not known to harm humans but can kill shrimp in a matter of days

, which wiped out as much as 60 per cent of China’s pig herd.
“The infection rate and lethalness of the virus are terrifying,” said Wu Jinhong, a shrimp farmer in Da’ao township in Jiangmen city.

It only takes two or three days from detecting the first infection for all shrimp in the pond to be killedWu Jinhong

last year. In Da’ao township, where nearly 20,000 people – roughly half of local residents – are employed on shrimp farms, two thirds of ponds were infected with the virus in the spring of 2019 and had to be immediately drained, Qiu said.

This virus is horrifying shrimp farmers, like avian flu did to poultry farmers and African swine fever to those raising pigsDai Jinzhi

The outbreak eased during the summer and autumn months when temperatures were higher, but made a comeback again in February. Farmers say that temperatures above 30 degrees keep the virus at bay.

“This virus is horrifying shrimp farmers, like avian flu did to poultry farmers and African swine fever to those raising pigs,” said Dai Jinzhi, who found out recently his six hectares of ponds were infected.

After he was forced to drain his enclosures, which held about 3700kg worth of shrimp, he was left with only 200kg of the crustaceans alive – something that cost him more than 100,000 yuan (US$14,000).

“We can’t do anything but remove the shrimp and sell them at dirt cheap prices, then dry out the pond and leave it idle for at least two months,” Dai said.

“Some [other farmers] suffered another hit by the virus after restarting farming in the same pond [too soon]. So I don’t dare start over until the end of next month, when the weather has warmed up.

Virus sparks food shortage in the Philippines

The Philippines reported 538 new cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 2,084 as of 31 March 2020 – the highest overnight jump recorded in ASEAN. The country also has a fairly low rate of recovery (49) compared to Malaysia (537) and Thailand (342).

In the second week of March, the Philippines government called for a lockdown of Metro Manila followed by an enhanced lockdown of Luzon island – which is home to about 60 million and is responsible for 70 percent of the Philippines' economic output.

The lockdown has since been extended to the entire country, and it has been nothing short of a chaotic experience for most residents. Duterte’s administration has been criticised for not issuing a comprehensive guideline for citizens to adhere to following the lockdown. This has been exacerbated by police checkpoints that have caused massive traffic jams for pedestrians, motorists and vehicles – making it almost impossible to maintain proper social distancing.

The traffic gridlock can be attributed to a misunderstanding of orders as well as workers who simply cannot afford not to go to work. In La Trinidad, the capital of the province of Benguet, precautions against the spread of COVID-19 have made it tough for farmers to deliver vegetables as they have to stop at several checkpoints before queuing at two trading posts to wait for buyers. More time on the road leads to poor quality of leafy vegetables, thus reducing their value.

The Mayor of La Trinidad, Romeo Salda on Saturday said trucks and cargo would not be allowed to transport vegetables on Monday and Tuesday because local government and health workers were tracing people who may have interacted with two people infected with the coronavirus.

The Philippines faces another challenge – food shortage. Residents in various parts of Luzon have complained that the financial assistance promised by the government on 16 March has yet to reach them.

Local media reported that some residents have started eating corn fungus and resorted to planting their own vegetables.

It is estimated that around 18 million low-income families have not received the P5,000 (US$98) to P8,000 (US$157) two-month cash subsidies under the "Bayanohan to Heal as One" law.

Even without the threat of a pandemic, the Philippines faces multiple challenges with regards to food security. In 2019, the World Bank reported that at least 20.8 percent of Filipinos are living below the poverty line while data from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) currently reports chronic malnutrition among Filipino children aged zero to two years at 26.2 percent, the highest in 10 years.

Things will not get easier for the Philippines as Vietnam on Friday announced that it plans to stockpile its rice and suspend new rice export contracts to ensure that it can feed its population of 97 million throughout the COVID-19 crisis.

This means that big rice buyers such as the Philippines – the world’s top rice importer in 2019 – and other countries in Asia and Africa could be vulnerable if population movements are curtailed for an extended period of time.

France summons Chinese ambassador over virus remarks

The French foreign ministry said on Tuesday it had summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest a string of controversial comments by Beijing's embassy in Paris on the coronavirus.

"I made clear my disapproval of certain recent comments when the ambassador... was summoned this morning," Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a ministry statement, adding that the remarks were not in line with the "quality of the bilateral relationship" between France and China.

China's embassy to France has been leading a high-profile public relations campaign in recent weeks to vaunt the country's success in largely quelling the coronavirus while criticising the handling of the crisis by Western countries.

On Sunday, the Chinese embassy published on its website a long text titled "Restoring distorted facts – Observations of a Chinese diplomat posted to Paris".

The diplomat, who was not named in the text, sharply criticised the Western response to the coronavirus outbreak as laggardly.

But most pointedly, the diplomat accused workers at nursing homes in France of "abandoning their posts overnight... and leaving their residents to die of hunger and disease".

It seems that the pathetic Vietcong rice troll has a yuuuge thing with rice.. maybe that's a side-effect of agent orange?

Check the UN FAO site:
http://www.fao.org/home/en/

Per-captia wise Chinese consume 3X more vegetables comparing to world average, and per-captia-wise consume most grain and rice, meat and other protein products in Asia btw, Chinese's rice and grain national storage along, can support the entire country for 2 years.

I can feel you my very very poor Vietcong troll, you have to starving yourself to export rice to China, otherwise how could you afford any of the Chinese products that dominating your entire country:rofl:

I have never seen Viet rice in any stores/supermarket here, Thailand rice maybe, but Vietcong rice? WTF? I guess the reason we imported more Vietcong rice this year is the result of we imported less American soy beans, so we can feed our pigs farm with Vietcong rice instead of American soy beans:lol:
Damn I thought it was One year, apparently our government is quite paranoid about grain security, which is a good thing. Annual grain production is around 600mil tonnes, we consume 200 mil as food and 400mil is used for animal feed etc. If we cut down meat consumption, our production is enough to feed us 2x over easily and if we include our 200-300mil tonnes reserve, we should easily feed our population even with global fluctuations.

First time in thousand years of history, a ban from VN put CN in panic :rofl:

China Urges Its Citizens Not to Hoard Rice Amid Mounting Concern Over Global Food Supply

Government officials in China, the world’s biggest consumer and producer of rice, called on citizens not to hoard the grain after a recent ban on new export sales by Vietnam sparked concerns over global supplies.

The country holds sufficient rice and wheat stockpiles for one year of consumption, while imports of the cereals are only about 2% of domestic usage, Wei Baigang, an agriculture ministry official, said at a conference on Saturday.

Vietnam is the third largest rice exporter, a sudden disruption will cause price increase, but your puny rice exports is not even enough to feed One province A Q. Hahha, so wake up its only common sense China Has to feed CHINA because no one can.

So you can post articles claiming China will have a food crisis, saying farmers are worried and pessimistic, you fail to understand China is a nation 900k sqkm with 1.4 billion ppl, one farmer with lack of workers or seeds cannot represent the whole China. You need a diverse survey across the country to know the real picture. How much do you want to bet with me that from now till next year, there is no food crisis? DO YOU DARE AH Q?
