The Ror (Suryavanshi Kshatriyas) community hails primarily from an area, close to Palanpur, stretching across the Gujarat – Rajasthan border. Historically, the community was also found concentrated around Ror (Sukkur) in Sindh, Pakistan. It would be rather optimistic to put the total population of the Ror at one million and it would be fairer to assign a total head count of 750,000 to the community. The community is fairly small and well-knit; as of today, they hold nearly 270 villages in Haryana and 52 more in Western Uttar Pradesh and the Haridwar district of Uttaranchal. It's not a lie. There are Baloch Marathas as well. You can research on them.
In his famed work, “A Glossary of the Tribes and castes of Punjab and North-West Frontier Provinces”, H.A. Rose says that the Ror are fine, stalwart men. Quoting from the third volume, Rose says:
The real seat of the Ror is the great Dhak jungles of Thanesar. They hold 84 villages and Amin is the “Tika” or head village. They also hold 12 villages south of Kaithal and the gotra there is Turan. Again, there are 12 more villages of the Ror beyond the Ganges. The immediate place of origin of the Rors seems to be Badli in Jhajjar tehsil of Rohtak district and all of them unanimously claim to have come from there.
In the Archaeological Survey of India Report for the year 1871-72, A.C.L. Carlleyle says about the image of a Ror warrior found at the site of Kaga Ror or Kagarol. The features of the face are fine and manly, of the handsomest Hindu type. The warrior has his right knee raised; on his right arm he presents a shield in defense and in the left hand he brandishes a straight sword of huge dimensions over his head. In a belt round his waist he wears a dagger with a cross-shaped hilt at his left side. The hair of the head is full but drawn back in straight lines on the head. Evidently, its a figure of a warrior of great strength.
History
According to the Indian Puranic tradition, the Ror are a people from the solar race of the Ikshvaku Kul.Sri Rama of Ayodhya had a descendant called Devaneek in the eighth generation after him and this Devaneek had three sons according to the Puranas. The three sons of Devaneek were called Ahinag (Aneeh), Roop and Ruru. Ruru is remembered by all Rors as their eponymous ancestor and the lineage from there on is well-preserved by their bards right up to King Dadror, whose descendants later started the fight with Aibak in 1207 by refusing to gift him any women. Evidence is also available to suggest that the Greeks used to call the Sauviras by names derived from the name of the Sauvira capital of Roruka
Ror Capitals
Ror clans historically ruled from Rori, the capital of Sind for a long time. Rori has been known by names such as Roruka and Rorik since antiquity. Buddhist Jataka stories talk about exchanges of gifts between King Rudrayan of Roruka and King Bimbisara of Magadh. Divyavadana, the Buddhist chronicle has said that Rori historically competed with Patliputra in terms of political influence. The importance of this town can not be underestimated as evident in the following JSTOR article. The scholar T.W. Rhys Davids has mentioned Roruka as one of the most important cities of India in the seventh century B.C.
Roruka was founded and established for the first time by King Ruruk, who was the fifth Ikshvaku dynasty ruler in the lineage after Raja Harishchandra of Kashi. An idea about the age of the city can be had by exploring the time line of the Ikshvaku dynasty. King Ruruk happened 29 generations before Sri Ram and should be dated to around 2500 BC using the most conservative estimates. If we believe the traditional Puranic time-line for the Indian Civilization, King Ruruk may have lived around 5500 BC.Thus, it can be seen that Roruka in the historical Sindhu-Sauvira area is quite an ancient seat of civilization dating back to the third millennium BC certainly.
Shortly after the reign of Rudrayan, in the times of his son Shikhandi, Roruka got wiped out in a major sand storm. This event is recorded in both Buddhist (Bhallatiya Jataka) and Jain (Story of Udayan and the town of Vitabhaya) annals. It was then that the legendary Dhaj, Ror Kumar built Rori Shankar (the current Rohri and Sukkur) in the year 450 BC.
The ancient city of Rori was also a major pilgrimage center where famous personalities like “Sant” Bhrithari, elder brother of the great King Vikramaditya, came to pay their respects to Shankar Bhagwan. After the Arab conquest of Sind, the invaders pulled down the ancient temple of Shiva but Rori still remains very important as a religious destination for the Sindhis.
Bardic Version
According to bards’ chronicles and accounts, Rors had two more capitals in India. King Mukan Dev of the Rors, who originally ruled from Palanpur in Gujarat, later extended his rule in the north of the country and established a second capital close to present-day Delhi in Badli, Jhajjar. In terms of evidence we have from inscriptions, the bards are definitely referring to Rudradaman I and his 150 A.D. campaign against the Yaudheya Kshatriyas when they say that the Ror king came from Gujarat and established his rule in Haryana.
There are no archeological proofs whatsoever - or in fact any kind of proof that the Ror community has any connection with Marathas.
Major Malkhan Singh Keshwar (Read) has answered this question in his book “Clarification to Unification” under the aegis of Tracing of Ror Caste History (TORCH) Samiti.
I am quoting on behalf of Major Keshwar the following Answer to the question above. And I quote :
The Ror Marathas on various forums have raised some fundamental questions based on Battle of Panipat, Gotras, Customs, Land allotment, Areas of settlement etc. I have mentioned these statements of so called Ror Marathas - and answered them in details with facts and figures of authentic history.
1. Ror Maratha Statement : The Rors are the leftover soldiers of defeated Maratha Army, who escaped the post war annihilation and escaped to hide in Dhak jungles of Kurukshetra, where they met their families - and that is how the Ror community came into existence as Ror Marathas!
There are few facts of history that do not support this claim :
a. Its a recorded fact that Shah Pasand Khan, with 4000 horse cavalry had laid a vigilance cordon in the region of Gharaunda - Karnal axis. On one of the occassion he murdered 8000 Marathas who had come to collect fodder and other logistics and impounded their goods. This was even before the battle had begun. 200 families passing through this cordon un-noticed has very little chance.
b. It does not stand to logic that when most of Maratha soldiers fled Southwest, why would 200 of them escape Northwards, where they would have no supporters?
c. It is also worth considering how these 200 families survived in the Dhak jungles of Kurukshetra without food or shelter.
2. Ror Maratha Statement : The agricultural land property holding with Rors today is a result of Doi / Doy / Doe Saab allotting lands to Rors ( who were proven as descendants of Rajputs as per Imperial Gazette) from the years 1880–1904!
These are statements that can only be made by people who did shallow research and have no knowledge of history.
a. Its true that a certain Doi / Doy / Doe Saab, a British Colonel was involved with allotment of Agricultural lands to various castes and tribes of those times. The so called Doi Saab died on 25 July 1825. It is anybody’s guess as to how he allotted land in 20th century. Only his ghost could have done it, so many years after his death.
b. It is also pertinent to state that the Imperial Gazette does not state the Rors to be descendants of Rajputs, but states as dependents of Rajputs.
c. Well this is again a falsehood spread amongst innocent village folks of Rors.
3. Ror Maratha Statement : There are no Rors beyond Pipli, as if a Lakshman Rekha has been drawn. This is because that is the maximum extent to which the Ror Marathas could expand?
This statement yet again indicates the lack of research and knowledge of history of those times - especially the Sikh History.
The areas Rors occupy today saw a turmoil of very large proportion caused by the forces of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the years 1806, 1807, 1808. He was invited by the British to mediate in a dispute between Raja and Rani of Patiala. In his famous trans Satlej campaigns, Ranjit Singh annexed lands Ambala, Shahbad, Malerkotla, Thanesar - there was havoc created thus burning villages, annexing lands, rendering a major population of this area Homeless. The Rors from these regions ( those vacated could be villages of Bodla, Jhanjhari, Khokhar, Panjokhra, Khanpur, Dudhkot and few others) then fled to occupy the current villages.
The Northern boundary of Ror settlements is not from Marathas escaping Northwards from Battle of Panipat, but definitely from the large exodus and destruction caused by Ranjit Singh’s campaigns.
4. Ror Maratha Statement : The fact that while sneezing we commonly say ‘Chattarpati ki Jai’ - proves that we are remembering Chhattarpati Shivaji of Marathas - and hence we are descendants of Marathas!
Only when one comes to the end of his logical thinking can someone give this reason as a logic for Maratha heritage of Ror caste. I mean this is really height of comparison - and is really funny.
By the way, anyone sneezing - one usually invokes the God Almighty - like Ya Allah, or Jesus or Vahe Guru etc - basically to prevent a bad omen. Even when the Marathas sneeze - the say Krishna - Ram - Hari. So it really is funny that Rors just got linked to Marathas by saying Chattarpati. Chattarpati in our context is the God Almighty the king of kings.
This one is really childish and very funny arguments of all.
5. Ror Maratha Statement : The maximum Gotras of Rors match with that of Marathas - that means we are descendants of Marathas!
If you refer to Page 222 of Dr More’s book “Panipat Yudh Ke Ror Maratha ka Itihaas” - you can very easily derive that writer has no knowledge of the established Vanshas, Kulas and Gotras of 36 Royal Hindu Races. A mere matching of one Gotra to another by twisting its spellings and because it sounds the same - does not make any logic. These are all - kulas and gotras - coming to us since centuries.
There are some very basic editing mistakes that are glaring and tell us that the writer is shallow in his knowledge of Gotras of Ror. Some examples given below -
6. Ror Maratha Statement : During our marriage in Ror caste the Bare Laddoos are given to the bhatiyas which is similar in Marathas also. This shows that our customs match and we have Maratha lineage?
This is actually one of the funniest claims and most shallow of argument to deduce the lineage of a caste.
In one of the images given in book by Dr More, they show a box of small laddoos being given to the Dulhan and comparing it to Bade Laddoos. Well everyone in Ror community knows that Bade laddoos are meant only for Bhatiyas - from the family of mother of bride or groom. No one else gets Bade Laddoos. How does a Maratha dulhan getting small laddoos compare to Ror customs.
Ridiculous is the comparison and needs to be shunned by everyone.

There are some very basic editing mistakes that are glaring and tell us that the writer is shallow in his knowledge of Gotras of Ror. Some examples given below -
- The Ror Gotras have been mentioned twice in their list - Khokhar, Dhakle, Balde, Jogran, Kalyankar (??), Turans etc. And each time they are shown to be from different Vanshas. That again is funny and a work in hurry.
- Take the example of Khokhar Gotra - it has been mentioned twice in the list ( ser 13, 54 of list). The Khokhar of serial 13 is shown of Gujjar vansh and that on serial 54 is shown as Falke vansh. Now it cannot get more ridiculous than this - and both are wrong. Khokhar are Rathores.
- The famous Bhaoo Gotra from the legacy of Rao Bhaoos of Kota / Bundi Rajputs - who gave a solid resistance and fight to Aurangzeb. This simply has been twisted to match Bhonsle. This does not even find mention in the 36 Royal Races.
- Take another example of Doodhians - who are Yaduvanshis and who have at some point of time ruled Chittor. Many forts of Doodhians were destroyed in various battles by the Marathas. How can someone just twist Doodhians to Dodhane and call them Marathas - their own destroyers.

Now it's up to you to believe whatever you want but yes there are Marathas who settled here and of many surnames.
