Land size and Population size doesn't matter in wars. Only the size of forces matters. Anyway, smaller countries are actually easier to defend.

There were 3 factions, Sikhs, Mughals and rebels. Some of the rebels sided with Ahmad Shah Durrani (e.g Muqarrab Khan) where as others just let him be. The other factions opposed him.

for all the warlord originating from Afghanistan, the majority warriors were recruited from the region you just mentioned and even today people from this region hold the majority in Pakistan army (Abdalis are not dead, his soul is still guiding those warriors when they come for you)
