Pakistan’s Shia targeted by Sunni militants - FT.com
Human Rights Watch, the international advocacy group, has warned of the growing threat to Shia Hazara Muslims from Sunni militants in Pakistan’s restive Baluchistan province, highlighting a wider regional conflict beyond recent advances made by insurgents in Iraq.
HRW on Monday released a report , documenting the deaths of several hundred Shia at the hands of Sunni militants since 2008.
The report coincides with growing international concern over advances made by Sunni militants in Iraq against the country’s Shia-led government, fuelling anxieties over a deepening bloody rift between the two communities.
The Hazara are descendants of Mongols and inhabit parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Members of the community claim they have been increasingly attacked by Sunni militants backed by patrons in the Saudi-led Gulf since the 1979 Islamic revolution in predominantly Shia Muslim Iran.
