T-38A has undergone modernization recently to a better than T-38C equivalent.. why would Turkish Air Force part with it so soon ? Does Pakistan have an urgent need, perhaps an exchange ?

1- By the beginning of 2016, 2nd ABW at Çiğli AFB will be transformed into NATO Multinational Military Flight Crew Training Centre, which eventually means the need of more planes whereas we are transferring it to our brother state Pakistan?

2- How about Azerbaijan?

If this news is about T37s and not T38s than it has a number of implications beyond the obvious. Unless they are replacing older T37s, PAF seems to ramping up induction of new pilots. With these plus the existing 65 T37s and 60 odd K8s in basic training role PAF will have more than 150 basic trainers at the Academy. Also J69 engine is ideal for use in Cruise Missiles so even if the 34 new T37s are junked we can have potentially 68 new Baburs.

Increase in induction of new pilots is consistent with what we are hearing from other services. An additional battalion at PMA Kakul and creation of a Division size Marines force. Signs of things to come.

Pakistan has also initiated search for the most sophisticated multi-role fifth generation plane and for the purpose Sweden, American, Turkish and some European planes are being examined. India is acquiring planes of fifth generation although it has reduced its order from 126 to 36 and that deal too is facing snags. It is expected that Pakistan would also acquire fifth generation fighter-bomber planes for its air force, the sources added.

Nice gesture by Turkey but those jets are obsolete / very old and even US is going to replace them soon, also T-38 are very unforgiving jet for pilots.

If PAF accepted them then maintaining them will be very difficult they are similar to M-3 when it comes to spare parts. L-15 will be much better to have then these. @gambit

That same stupid argument. PAF operated T-37 tweet for 4 decades! Our J-6s, again in service for almost 4 decades! were also twin engines.

Never heard of this development. Where will it fit in PAF training regime

supersonic trainer sirjee. Right now fighter conversion is being done on F-7s, and they're not going to last very long. this might replace that until a more viable option appears.

T38 is an obsolete platform just like T37 and has been withdrawn from USAF service. maybe its an improvement over the T37 at best.

Where did you here that they have been withdrawn from service? US doesn't have a trainer to replace it at the moment!

Yaar, i spoke to an official in the Pakistan Embassy in Ankara, he confirmed the T-37 deal but said he was unaware of any news regarding the T-38.

Make sense since Turkey grounded its fleet back in 2012 following two fatal crashes. These aircraft will serve as spares mostly if inducted.

ISLAMABAD: In a gesture of goodwill, Turkey has decided to provide 34 jet trainers to Pakistan as a gift. The Northrop T-38 Talon is a two-seat, twin-engine supersonic jet trainer and it was the world’s first supersonic trainer and also the most produced.



The T-38 remains in service as of 2015 in air forces throughout the world. The decision was conveyed by Turkish Commander of Air Force General Abidin Unal to his counterpart in Pakistan Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman when they met recently.



It is likely the planes would be handed over to Pakistan before the end of the year. Highly placed sources of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) told The News here other day that the supply of 34 planes will reduce financial burden on the PAF and the planes will cater to PAF needs at least for the next 10 years.



T-38M is a modernised Turkish Air Force T-38A with full glass cockpit and avionics, upgraded by Turkish Aerospace Industries under the project. The US Air Force is using T-38M extensively and about 50,000 pilots have got training on this type of plane. One plane costs US $5.879 million as it is a US made machine that is being used world over including Nasa.



The sources said that Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman would go to Turkey to receive the gift from the Turkish Air Force. The sources said that Pakistan would keep upgrading its JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter plane which is attracting buyers world over.
