Pakistan Turkey Defence Production Updates

  • An engine development proposal from Ukraine for the TF-X project. According to Ukraine’s proposal, an engine named AI-9500 will be developed over the AI-322 turbofan engine that will be used in the MİUS project and it is being evaluated by the authorities to use it in the TF-X project.

  • Baykar machinery and Motor Sich companies signed the MS500 turboprop engine technical specification agreement for Akıncı offensive unmanned aerial vehicle. Haluk Bayraktar said that a new engine alternative has been created for the Akıncı with the MS500 engine and that the first flight will be made with the MS500 in 2022 (Ms500 Turboprop engine can generate 1050 hp).

  • Siper Blok-1 missile, which is the first missile of Turkey’s long-range air defense system SİPER project, whose first fire test was carried out a few days ago, is estimated to have a range of 70-100 km. While making statements on the subject, Roketsan General Manager Murat İkinci announced that a new missile with a range of 150 km will follow after this missile.

  • The first two of the Anka armed unmanned aerial vehicles exported to Tunisia were delivered. It allowed Anka to enter the inventory of a different country for the first time. Also, 1 more is to be delivered soon. TUSAŞ corporate Marketing Manager Serdar Demir announced that Anka unmanned aerial vehicles were exported to an unnamed country. Thus, the number of countries ordering Phoenix became 2.

The 35-mm anti-aircraft shipborne gun GÖKDENİZ manufactured by the Turkish company ASELSAN will be delivered to the Philippines, which will become the third export buyer of this system after Turkmenistan and Pakistan.

A ceremony was held at the Turkish capital on Wednesday to mark the arrival of the first Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul (ITI) train carrying goods from Pakistan to Turkiye, via Iran after the resumption of its operations.

The ITI cargo train started its journey from Islamabad on Dec. 21, 2021, and arrived in Ankara in around 13 days. Turkey's Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoglu, Member of Pakistan National Assembly Makhdoom Zain Hussain Qureshi, and Iranian Ambassador to Turkiye Mohammad Farazmand attended the ceremony.

Departing from the Margalla station in Islamabad, the train took a route of 5,981 kilometers (3,666 miles) in 12 days and 21 hours. The cargo train aims to boost trade between Pakistan, Iran, and Turkiye. It comprises eight loaded wagons, 20 feet each with a capacity of 22 tons.

Karaismailoglu in his speech said the new railway will offer new options to the industrialists and businesspeople on the Pakistan-Iran-Turkiye route.

"It will save time and cost compared to sea transportation between Pakistan and Turkiye, which takes 35 days, and will lead to the development of trade between the two countries," he said.

"Thus, with the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul train, a new railway corridor will be provided to our exporters in the south of Asia -- having the highest population density globally -- reaching Pakistan, neighboring India, China, Afghanistan, and Iran. In this way, our country will be one step closer to its goals of becoming a bridge and logistics base between Asia and Europe," Karaismailoglu added.

Speaking at the ceremony, Qureshi highlighted that the ITI train would play an important role in enhancing regional connectivity and promotion of economic and commercial activities in the ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) region. Iran, Pakistan, and Turkiye established the Regional Cooperation for Development organization in 1964 and renamed it ECO in 1985.

Qureshi added that the train would offer Pakistan an opportunity to further increase its exports and strengthen its connectivity with international markets, including in Europe.

"The current government in Pakistan believes in regional connectivity and we feel that to play a role at the national stage we need to be economically reliable. In order to do that, we need to not only have peace in our region but also increase the trade within our neighborhood and this ITI project will become a friendship project.

"We get access to the European markets and Turkey gets access to the central Asian states so it is a mutually beneficial arrangement and I hope it will be sustainable and we can grow from it further," Qureshi told Anadolu Agency in an interview.

Ambassador Farazmand in his speech said the ITI railway project was first launched in 2009 under the economic cooperation organization but remained suspended due to technical issues and restarted after 10 years.

He emphasized that the three countries also plan to launch a passenger train to the same route in the near future.

The first train from Islamabad to Istanbul was inaugurated on Aug. 14, 2009. Since then, eight trains have been dispatched from Pakistan to Turkiye. Turkiye has also dispatched six trains to Pakistan, but the train service was discontinued due to floods in Pakistan in 2009.

Deputy Chief of Turkish General Staff, General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at GHQ here on Thursday, said Inter-Services Public Relation (ISPR) in a statement on Thursday.

According to ISPR, matters of regional security situation, mutual and professional interest with special emphasis on defence and security collaboration between the two brotherly countries were discussed during the meeting.

The COAS said: "We highly value our brotherly relations with Turkey which are deeply rooted in history and entrenched in our cultural and religious affinities.

He underscored the importance of peace and reconciliation initiatives in Afghanistan, said ISPR.

OPERATIONALISES ‘TANK-KILLER’ BAYRAKTAR TB-2 DRONE

The Pakistan Air Force has operationalised the Bayraktar TB-2 medium altitude long endurance (MALE) tactical UCAV armed drone for service. An initial batch of the drone and all associated equipment were procured in mid-2021 by Pakistan in a deal with Baykar Defence of Turkey, which also included joint production and development of the larger Anka-S MALE UCAV drone and its future variants.

The TB-2 is a MALE UCAV drone capable of a 27 hour endurance and a flight ceiling of 25,000 feet. The MTOW of the drone is 1,430 pounds, enabling it to carry a variety of ATGMs, air to ground precision munitions and rockets on its four hard points. The TB-2 also provides excellent Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities with a variety of electrooptical paylods. An onboard avionic suite with a triple redundant avionic system encompasses units enabling a fully autonomous taxiing, take-off, landing and cruise.

The TB-2 has SATCOM capabilities as well as datalink (300 km range) and has a 150 kg weapons capacity. The SATCOM full range of the drone is not available publicly but rumoured to be 1000 km. The drone also has excellent ECCM capabilities, being able to subdue and resist Russian electronic warfare attacks in Syria and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The standard avionics payload configuration includes an electro-optical (EO) camera module, an infrared (IR) camera module, a laser designator, a laser range finder (LRF) and a laser pointer. The TB-2 also has an option to integrate Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) and an AESA radar for airborne surveillance purposes. Standard weapons include 4 MAM-L and MAM-C highly precise GPS/INS guided smart munitions with 8-14 km ranges.

The TB-2 has completed over 400,000 operational flight hours. The TB-2’s anti-armour capabilities are extremely combat proven and extensive. During wartime, the TB2 could survey and detect enemy mechanised formations, air defence sites and troop concentrations either through its signals intelligence arsenal or the impressively long range of its EO/IR sensor (believed to be over 75km against targets such as vehicles), which would then be engaged either directly by TB-2s, or the information could be relayed via datalink to Pakistan's other strike options such as the Fateh-1 long range guided MLRS.

The TB-2 provides the PAF with a highly effective & combat proven tactical unmanned ISTAR+strike platform, especially for penetrating air defences and conducting strikes on both enemy air defence infrastructure and equipment and the integrated battle groups they are protecting.
It is likely the the drones will be shown for the first time to the Pakistani public on the Pakistan Day Parade this year on 23rd March.

T he second ship of the Babur class, PNS Khaibar is currently under construction in Istanbul, and two more ships, PNS Badr and Tariq are being constructed in Karachi. PNS Badr is expected to be launched in mid-summer 2022.

Transformation: A concept of rise or fall for automotive industry

LAS VEGAS: The automotive industry is going through a transformation, similar to the one that saw what was the once world’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia’s fall from grace nearly a decade ago after it suffered from a series of poor management decisions and failed to keep up with rapid market change, innovation and competitors.

This transformation that is seeing the automotive sector rapidly turning into a mobile ecosystem is an opportunity for Turkey’s Automobile Joint Venture Group (Togg), a mobility-oriented technology company that is developing the country’s first domestically produced car, according to its CEO, Mehmet Gürcan Karakaş.

Karakaş’s remarks came as Turkey’s first indigenous vehicle made its international debut at the world’s largest technology and gadget fair, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which was held this week in Las Vegas with a heavy presence of automakers unveiling their newest vehicles with advanced interconnectivity and autonomous functioning.

Togg showed off its Transition Concept Smart Device, an all-electric fastback concept car. At the same time, it also showcased its experienced team and startups that are part of an ecosystem that is building the car’s smart systems, from a driver monitoring system for greater safety to a plethora of infotainment screens.

Karakaş highlighted that automotive industry players that fail to keep pace with the ongoing transformation would recede from the global stage, stressing features that make Togg different.

“Those who fail to achieve the transformation are envisaged to disappear. I don’t need to go into the names of the companies. We compared almost 20 companies with our global consultants. Large companies must transform in the business environment,” he noted.
