Pakistan to sell 05 to 07 JF-17 Thunder Fighter Planes next year

If you think they can integrate them with the Mirages ... do you think they didnt with the JF-17?

but I wasn't questioning Pakistan's or China's ability to integrte these weapons with Jf-17. I was asking whether or not these Pak weapons are already integrated,tested,operationalized with Jf-17. If not,they won't be forming a part of weapons package of jf 17 and even if Pakistan exports fully made aircrafts,the weapons would've to come from china.

There are no confirmations.. not even other other weapons... doesnt mean they are not there... as for weapon package.. it depends on the customer doesnt it?

@Oscar: Seriously bro, do take the effort of organizing the parts/components/tech by Pakistan in Jf-17 into a separate list/thread. It would be really helpful. If such a thing exists,please point us to it. Thank You.

Well, the teams are on it. As such a start can be the PAC website to figure out what comes and goes from where.
So for a start in avionics that are total Pakistani DESIGN input and not a collaborative design or IP if that is.

Global Attitude Heading reference System (GAHRS)

Global Attitude Heading Reference System (GAHRS) is an avionics subsystem of JF-17 aircraft which provides high performance measurement of aircraft attitude by using highly reliable optical fi ber gyroscopes and accelerometers. GAHRS is a backup system of Inertial Navigation System (INS). In case of INS failure, it provides roll, pitch and heading information to Weapon Mission Management Computer (WMMC) using RS 422 interface

Integrated Survivable Recorder (ISR)

Integrated Survivable Recorder (ISR) is an important LRU of aircraft Electro Mechanical Management System (EMMS). It receives flight and audio data being sent from electromechanical management computer through HDLC bus and records them in crash survival memory unit (CSMU). After recording the data in accordance with the bus commands, it downloads the recorded data and sends it to electromechanical management computer.


Light Warning System (LWS)

Light warning system is used to display emergency warning signals. It's main purpose is to draw the pilot's attention to the warning signals for a proper timely action. It has a Built in Test Function for checking its serviceability and provides four warning levels according to degree of emergency related to flight safety and mission plan.



Stores Management System (SMS)

SMS is able to manage and control guns, bombs, external tank and stores such as armament at stations and pods which comply with MIL-STD-1760C-97. It also ensures that stores functions are carried out in addition to offering certain safety measures.



Smart Head Up Display (SHUD)

SHUD is an integrated electro optical display unit, and is one of the important units of aircraft. It is the main window which provides fl ight and combat information to the pilot. It employs command control mode to generate fl ight symbology required in navigation and combat. The displayed symbology are imaged to infi nity and superimposed with outside scene, enabling the pilot to view the displayed information without adjusting eyes while observing the outside scene. The unit is NVIS compatible. It outputs superimposed video signals for recording, so as to provide evidences for combat and training analysis.



Instrument Landing System (ILS)

ILS is used for aircraft approach and landing. It receives and processes the signals transmitted from ground localizer and glide-slope stations. It provides pilot deviation information from the given course and glide path so as to lead aircraft to the visual runway entrance according to the correct path track. The equipment is one of the essential systems which ensures safe landing of the aircraft under adverse weather conditions.





Back Up Acquisition Computer (BAC)
BAC is a back up computer for avionics systems and provides fl ight critical information to the pilot in case of main bus / mission management computer failure. BAC accepts data from fl ight critical systems on a separate RS 422 data line and communicates the same to Multi Function Displays. It also provides excitation voltage to hydraulic and brake sensors.




Inertial Navigation System (INS)

Radar Altimeter provides data on 1553 Bus pertaining to aircraft actual height above ground level. This data can be displayed on Head Up Display (HUD).



Smart Multi Function Colour Display (SMFCD)

SMFCD is a NVIS compatible display providing the graphical interface of the avionics & non-avionics systems to the pilot. Input to SMFCDs are 1553B data bus, RS-422 XGA In/out and RGB Video Out.



Central Supression Unit (CSU)
Aircraft are equipped with multiple avionics systems consisting of both active and passive systems. It requires an intelligent electromagnetic management system which can ensure co-existance of high power transmitters and high sensitivity receivers. Central Suppressor Unit (CSU) ensures optimum utilization of electromagnet spectrum on board JF-17 aircraft.



Weapon Mission Management Computer (WMMC)
WMMC is a central computer for JF17 aircraft avionic system control and management. The basic tasks of WMMC are multiplex data bus communication management, mission planning and fl ight program management, fi re control calculation, navigation assistance, audio alarming, integrated display managing (including digital map display control) and pilot interface control for avionics systems.


Electro Mechanical Management Computer (EMMC)


EMMC has the capability of communicating with Non-avionics systems of JF-17 aircraft. The computer collects data from various aircraft systems (air data sensors, fuel system, engine, etc). It also monitors electro mechanical systems and carries out data management/ transmission.



Data Transfer Unit (DTU)
Data transfer unit is an avionicssub system of JF-17 aircraft. DTU is used for mission planning, subsystem initialization and recording of vital inflight operational and technical data. Data transfer unit communicates with mission computer. It uploads the mission planning data to avionics sub-systems and retrieves in flight data via Rs422 interface. Retrieved data is used for operation and technical analysis.



Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

Audio Control Box (ACB) is the hub of audio signals management. It receives audio signals from on-board systems like mission computer, communication, navigation and weapon systems and routes these audio signals to pilot headset / recording systems.

Up Front Control Panel (UFCP)

UFCP is a man-machine interface (MMI) for the avionics sub-systems in JF-17 aircraft. The basic functions include setting, altering and displaying the navigation/communication system's parameters. It communicates with Weapon and Mission Management Computers (WMMC) via RS 422 communication link.



Avionics Activation Panel (AAP)

AAP is used to simplify pilot's operation by centrally activating / deactivating avionics subsystems in JF-17 aircraft. It has the provision for individual or group activation of avionics sub-systems.


In other cases the design input varies to anything from nill to 60%. The JF-17 DOES NOT carry ONLY Chinese systems. As such there are components from sources including the US, South Africa, Germany, South Korea , Italy and other countries whose representatives off and on helped in the integration and inclusion of these components into the aircraft.

I am eagarly waiting for a thread that will detail the sub systems of pak origin in jf 17. By the way I was under the impresion that ILS was used by commercial a/c only. Does other combat a/c have ILS as well?

Can you explain the term Design Input to this biased person :)

Is it totally designed by PAF or PAF has given the inputs to the designer in terms of specifications.

Defence budget lacks specifications on exporting JF-17 Thunder

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s strained economic condition puts to question the country’s capability to spend billions of rupees on the defence sector on the pretext of enhancing the defence exports and kicking off related strategic ventures.
While the country grapples with worst kind of economic crises owing to crippled industry due to ever-rising inflation, increasing cost of industrial expenditures following massive hike in power tariff as well as security situation, billions of rupees are reportedly being pumped in the strategic projects without any accurate anticipation whether such kind of large-scale investment at the cost of public money would bear any fruit.
Some reports suggest that Pakistan intends to export sophisticated JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to certain countries by next year and $ 100 million (over 10 billion rupees) have been released in this regard. Interestingly, this reported amount is more than four times the size of funds allocated to Pakistan’s defence production sector (2.3 billion rupees) in this year’s fiscal budget. In the defence budget for the ongoing year, there is no mention of any prioritised project in the Defence Production Division suggesting the exports of JF-17 Thunder and the allocation of over Rs 10 billion for related expenses.
The budgetary allocations for defence and defence production sectors for the fiscal year 2013-14 suggest, of the Rs 627 billion defence budget, the Defence Division has received Rs 4.2 billion and the Defence Production Division, Rs 2.300 billion. Separately, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) have respectively got Rs 1.3 billion and Rs 5.8 billion. Pakistan Army has got Rs 310 billion in this year’s fiscal budget, which is almost 50 percent of the total defence budget for 2013-14. The PAF got Rs 131 billion that makes 21 percent of the Rs 627 billion defence budget while Pakistan Navy got Rs 63 billion, around 10 percent of the defence funds. Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) got Rs 6.2 billion.
As many as 20 projects have been prioritised for which Rs 3.5 billion have been allocated while only two projects in the Defence Production Division have been prioritised with the allocation of Rs 2.3 billion.

Adding to the mystery shrouding reported plans for exporting JF-17 Thunder, the top government functionaries concerned have kept conspicuous mum over the issue. This correspondent called Rana Tanvir Hussain, Federal Minister for Defence Production thrice at his personal cell number on Friday to get his viewpoint on the issue but he did not speak. His personal assistant Muhammad Bilal said the minister was in a meeting with Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and was not available for comments.
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, on contact, expressed inability to comment on the issue saying the matter was not known to him. “Frankly speaking, I haven’t heard of any such development. How can I say anything without having proper knowledge?”
The Secretary Defence Production Lieutenant General (r) Tanvir Tahir was called at his official landline number 051-9270930 but he, according to his staff, was not in the office.

Jointly manufactured by Aviation Industry Corp of China and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC), JF-17 Thunder is originally a Chinese product, with the related technology shifted to Pakistan in the recent years. Regarded as a third-generation multipurpose combat jet, the JF-17 Thunder, in technical terms, is known as FC-1 Fierce Dragon.
In an interview with a Chinese news agency in May this year, Chairman PAC Air Marshal Sohail Gul Khan had claimed that several countries were interested in buying JF-17 Thunder from Pakistan. The PAC manufactured more than 40 JF-17 Thunder aircraft, he had said
The recent media reports claim Pakistan is to export five to seven JF-17 Thunder jets to the countries like Sri Lanka, Kuwait and Qatar and related deliberations are under way.
Requesting anonymity, a retired air marshal said, the manufacturing cost incurred on JF-17 Thunder is 1.5 billion to two billion rupees, roughly. “It needs to be determined whether there is a significant room for exporting this aircraft and earning profit after incurring such huge amount of money,” he said. Pakistan’s current defence budget of Rs 627 billion has seen 15 percent surge compared to the last year’s defence budget of Rs 545 billion that was revised at Rs 570 billion.

Is it the case of being designed by Pakistan and produced by China?

Refer to the post where it has been highlighted what are indigenous and what are produced. Where there is co-production it is listed CLEARLY. A slight effort in reading rather than looking for some brownie points on usual agenda might help.

Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) system is solid state, airborne and selective transponder being co-produced in collaboration with M/s JIUZHOU China. It is used for identification of friend or foe. The system is compatible which civil ATC radar beacon system for air traffic control. PAC also provides the life cycle maintenance support to the JZ/YD 125 IFF system.


Clear mention of collaborative process.

Its essentially the system for the attitude indicator. The explanation is pretty simple, it is for measuring aircraft orientation. Going up, going down.. accelerating etc.

I am sure if the cost of each Block-II JF-17s would be $23 Million per piece then for 100 JF-17s for PAF it will cost $2.3 Billions in 5 years time. Also if PAC would have gain more orders like from Yemen, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other countries then it can easily produce about 50-55 JF-17s each year....

Tell me about the dual seat version of this aircraft???? Is it ready to be produced???
