Pakistan tests candidates knowledge of Islam

indian rumor mill on full gas...

Not only that! A Candidate in Karachi was heckled by a couple of Mullahs that he wasn't a true Muslim as he did not sport a beard!! And so it was blasphemous to stand for elections as this would set a bad example!! Jeeeez!

So, according to these bozos, only the bearded are true Muslims! All others are infidels! :frown:

. .
Personally, I believe they should be testing the candidates knowledge of MICRO and MACRO ECONOMICS and NOT DUA E QUNOOT.:D

The ECP is trying to provide guidance to the Returning Officers to avoid such irrelevant questioning:

ECP directs ROs to refrain from ‘irrelevant’ quizzing of candidates

Mubashir Zaidi

ISLAMABAD: In a belated attempt to ward off criticism on the Returning Officers’ controversial questioning of candidates during scrutiny of nomination papers, the Election Commission of Pakistan has directed the ROs to refrain from ‘irrelevant’ quizzing of the nominees, ECP’s Director General Sher Afgan told reporters in Islamabad.

The nature of questions being asked by returning officers has attracted severe criticism from media, rights activists and political parties. However, the methodology was being defended until Friday by ECP Secretary Ishtiaq Ahmed who said Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution required the candidates to have ample knowledge of Islam.

Several candidates have had their nominations rejected on what are widely being viewed as flimsy grounds. Most prominent among those whose nominations were rejected is columnist Ayaz Amir. His nomination was rejected on the grounds that he wrote columns against the ideology of Pakistan and glorified the consumption of alcohol.

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the 2013 election candidates will continue until tomorrow.

Many believe that the latest ECP directive is a futile exercise as the scrutiny process will soon come to an end.

“Damage has already been done. The latest move is a damage control exercise to deflect criticism primarily arising out of Ayaz Amir’s case,” former Supreme Court Bar Association president and ex-member of ECP Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood told Dawn.com.

The former judge said the scrutiny process had also exposed the degree of competence of the returning officers working under the judiciary.

guys asking politicians about Islam is not Islamic extremism. in Islamics Republic Of Pakistan where these Politicians take the refuge of Islam and Swear every ten seconds on Allah's name I think it is wise to at least check where there Islamic knowledge lies. and also this test was not just about Islam as you read one of them was asked to spell 'graduation'and 'superintendent'. and could not do so these exerciser are a first in Pakistan and many of you who r following our elections closely must have the knowledge of fake degree holders
rite now we are holding these people responsible who lie to us and use Islam as a weapon for there own use at least now we know who is fake and who is not

about the good Muslims have beard part . these were just two guys who most probably have less knowledge of Islam and less education we all know having facial hair wont make you a good muslim being a good muslim makes you a good muslim. beard is a Sunnat a gesture of humility not a nessicity for every one Allah will not send you in Hell for not having a beard but Allah will send you to hell for stealing and lying.

I am Glad some one is out there making (dood ka dood Pani ka pani ) i hope our next batch of leaders r educated and honest i know this is far fetched but one can pray.

Goes on to show the kind of jahils hiding behind the flag of Islam in the world today. Now basically candidates will be tested for their knowledge in Islam. What a perfect way to create a mullahcracy. Thanks to the mullahs we are in a mess everywhere we go. No one bothers to stop the mullah from impinging on peoples right to be themselves.

Religion is a personal matter between God and man. No one has the right to judge another over how much or how little the person follows Islam. We should adopt secular theory and be done with it.

very true but these politicians do take the refuge of islam and the name of god in every second speech calling there opponents non muslim and stuff its a good thing that they r being tested for this atleast now we know they r hollow frm inside.

we are officially an islamic country with over 90% muslim population and our rulers must know about the faith of 90% of the people they want to rule...
if they dont then they will keep causing trouble by maing laws clashing with islamic values and that will be unacceptible for majority...

best is to change the title of islamic republic to just republic of pakistan

Sharif’s beardless bro faces opposition

Now why don't you go check it out yourself instead of blabbering? After all it happened in Lahore - a city near you. :P

Facing opposition in what sense? Any Dick or Harry can go to RO at the time of scrutiny of the candidate and can raise any objection, I find nothing wrong in it for law of the land allows every citizen to raise objection of any sort. Raising objection and declaring one ineligible on the basis of raised objections are two different things, please make a note of that. Such zealots exist everywhere, even in your very own country bigots assault men and women for participating in night parties.

Although I agree the article that allows such bozos to raise objection worths nothing.

Khuda ganjay ko naakhun naa dey.

These article provisions are giving overreaching powers to those ill-trained and ill-advised to use them properly, thus the big mess.

Very right! ECP must devise some training sessions for them, it's very vital to know what is to be asked.

This begs the question why was ECP sleeping on the job, and why did they not see the need to provide clear guidance on how the Articles were to be applied by the Returning Officers? Even now it is not too late to do so.

ECP should put out a clarifying policy indicating what are the questions that ROs can ask to determine knowledge of religion and moral character, so that both they and the candidates know what is expected of them to meet the requirements of the law.

If everything was under the control of ECP then things would have blossomed out altogether differently, politicos wouldn't have been in the mess they are in. Until SC intervention ECP was bit pro politicians, it even announced, under the pressure from political parties, that it would not take any action against fake degree holders. Strings lie somewhere else, SC is stirring up both the ECP and ROs directly. ECP is too feeble to override the pressure of both apex court and the political parties, licitly it must not overrule the instruction from former but again you kill the purpose of an autonomous authority if you start taking pressure.

That is what I fear greatly - that the actual strings are being manipulated from somewhere else, and with a secretive agenda that does not bode well for the country.
