Pakistan tests candidates knowledge of Islam

they cant be our leaders obviously. i mean ofcourse its not fair to them but they can hold local posts if they choose , but i wouldnt be too happy if a non muslim gets to be the president or prime minister.
Your constitution forbids a non Muslim to be PM or president so obviously what you fear cannot happen till it is amended.

But why can't a non Muslim become a legislature or MNA? Surely there is no bar on that?

.
We can get better Muslim Leaders through a better education system or a Singaporean styled Meritocracy tailor made for Pakistan; otherwise this doesn't achieve anything but makes a mockery out of the screening process ! Just stick to 'no pending legal cases' & 'no history of conviction' - Pretty much everything Islamic gets covered therein.

Yeah I like to see progress to but if I were to be honest, I'd prefer the Lahore of the '90s I grew up in with its less pollution, less unbridled commercialization, many a green belts & parks, a distinctly down-to-earth character to it & one that wasn't nearly as seeped with consumerism as it seems to be !

whats wrong with pending cases??everybody is innocent until proven gulity..wrong charges can be framed anyone if they are to be made out of the nominations..

Get your name cleared before contesting the elections ! Otherwise if you win you might find yourself in the position to influence the court proceedings.

just for an idea..how long it may take for a criminal case to be adjudicated completely in pakistan???this is of 2011 news and it says about 2.5 million cases are pending in courts.so if a person who is wrongly framed must wait atlest 2-3 years or more to get justice right??

leave about president or pm..atleast they must have a fair chance to represent themselves and express their problems in the legislature dont u think??

.
I dont care-

We need to get rid of these old illiterate corroupt politicians-

If asking them to recite kalima is the only way left to disqualify them low life leeches then i fully support the criteria-
Disqualify them even if by means of one's character- appearance or known associations-

Do you know any other Muslim country who follows the same rule.
Precisely. These issues are political and religion is being used specifically as a tool to weed people out, rather than politics being used as a tool to regulate the application of religion, as happens in countries from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Many Muslims worry about this craziness of Pakistanis. This Saudi naval commander, for example, feels compelled to specifically criticize Pakistan in Arab News, pointing out that it's enough for a Muslim to follow the five basics and as far as the Koran goes it's '“You have your own religion and I have mine”... then you can maintain social justice among people regardless of their faith.' link

Looking at the worries of hindus.. it seems they are very unhappy.

IMO, returning officer is not discharging his duties diligently.
When, laws of elections says, that candidate must have adequate knowledge of Islam, than they shall test this knowledge thoroughly, not half heatedly telling the candidates to recite short sura.
All candidates must be asked about explaining basis of Islam, i.e. Tauheed, Iman, namaz, zakat etc.

HRCP decries ‘charade in the name of scrutiny’
DAWN.COM

LAHORE: A leading Pakistani human rights watchdog has expressed alarm over recent “undesirable developments” in Pakistan, including what it describes as a “charade” in the name of scrutiny of nomination papers.

“Those ‘managing’ the election affairs have embroiled the people in issues that are as irrelevant as they are unnecessary,” the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said in a hard-hitting statement issued Friday.

“Candidates for the general elections are being asked questions that have no link whatever with the law and the constitution.”

Several candidates for the forthcoming general elections have complained of being bombarded with inappropriate and provoking questions during scrutiny of candidacy paper, with some questions relating to religious text and others to personal issues.

According to the Pakistan’s constitution, a person cannot qualify to be a Member of Parliament if he “violates Islamic injunctions,” or has “worked against the integrity of the country or opposed the ideology of Pakistan.”

In its statement, the HRCP especially noted the rejection of popular columnist and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) Ayaz Amir’s nomination papers by election commission staff for allegedly ‘flouting’ the ideology of Pakistan in one of his articles.

“The disqualification binge is fast turning into a farce that not only denies people the right to elect their representatives but also violates the most basic principle of natural justice,”

The HRCP said it fears the “undesirable developments” may “circumvent people’s democratic rights and strengthen obscurantist elements.”

“Sinister forces are striking at the very foundation of democracy in the country. This cull of candidates is set to defeat the very purpose of holding elections, and is aimed at inciting disputes and creating divisions among politicians and paving the way for conservative obscurantists,” read the statement.

“The commission fears that if the events of the past few days and weeks were not stopped then the dream of realizing genuine democracy in the country would become just that, a dream.”

we are officially an islamic country with over 90% muslim population and our rulers must know about the faith of 90% of the people they want to rule...
if they dont then they will keep causing trouble by maing laws clashing with islamic values and that will be unacceptible for majority...

If that is the case they why Sharia is not allowed in Pakistan. That is what the majority want.

Sir you forgetting Pakistan is the only country which was formed for Islam. No amount of religion is less here. The more the merrier :pakistan:

Why are indian a$$es burning?

Because the feeling of majority of Pakistanis is not being taken into considerations by the Govt of Pakistan. Majority want Sharia. And that should be implemented ASAP as per the wishes of majority Pakistanis (and not those on PDF)

.
instead of islam, ask them about stuff related to their terms like energy crisis, population boom, corruption, terrorism.

Bet half of the candidates can even correctly pronounce these, let alone spell it or know meaning of it...
