ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has successfully test fired long-range surface-to-surface missile. Hataf-6 Shaheen-2 ballistic missile have 2000 kilometers range. The missile could carry nuclear as well as conventional weapons.

The nuclear-capable Shaheen-2 missile was launched from an undisclosed location Saturday, and has a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,245 miles).

Prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen. Tariq Majeed and defence minister Ahmed Mukhtar witnessed the missile test.

President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani have congratulated the missile scientists for successful test of the Hataf-6 Shaheen-2 ballistic missile.

I think the test was again to check the operational readiness of the missle.

this is good thing seeing the president and prime minister togather will calm the political situation down

A good development indeed, but we cant stop, we must improve this tecknology. This is a matter of defence and we will never take defence lightly.:pakistan:

At the same time I hope we can also get a good anti missile defence system to protect against any missiles

Earlier in 2004 the range was reported to be 2.500km.
Is this a different version?

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan on April 19 test-fired a long-range ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads, the military said.

The Shaheen II, or Hatf VI, missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,280 miles) was launched from an undisclosed location, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas told AFP.

"This was the second test of the missile since February last year," he added. Shaheen is the longest range missile that Pakistan has produced.

"The launch was very successful. It hit the target with complete accuracy," Abbas said.

The test was conducted as part of technical improvements to verify Pakistan's land-based strategic missile systems, the military said in a statement.

Pakistan's missile arsenal includes short-range, medium and long-range missiles named after Muslim conquerors.

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani witnessed the launch, Abbas added. It was the first missile test by the army since a new civilian government took power a month ago.

Gilani congratulated the scientists and engineers on achieving an important milestone in "Pakistan's quest for sustaining strategic balance in South Asia," the military statement said.

He told the gathering at the missile launch that Pakistan's strategy of credible minimum deterrence was a guarantee of peace in the region.

Gilani said the country's strategic program will continue to be consolidated and further strengthened in line with the needs of national security.

South Asian rival Pakistan and India have routinely conducted missile tests since both demonstrated nuclear weapons capability in 1998.

it's because our politicians don't have the balls like they said they would to stand up against the west  kidding.

you can expect the missile to have a much longer range than that. 2500km would be ideal for the MIRV'ed missile with 7-10 warheads. Of course, we do have the shaheen III which we won't test for a while and the rumoured-to-exist tipu sultan.

pakistan should consider developing different missile designs like india has done. normally, the ICBM's Russia and US use aren't that much larger than the shaheen III.

imagine how large our icbm would be based of the ghauri or shaheen design? likewise, we need to spend more on R&D and keep on developing new designs, technology, guidance, SLBM's.

we can't keep on testing the same missile over and over again just for quality assurance. the army treats these nuclear missiles like they're just another weapon in the arsenal. unfortunately, i don't think they've realized that nuclear weapons are a totally different game.

we should have made a prototype icbm already along with an slbm, even if we didn't reveal it.

Pakistan declares long-range missile ready for wartime use

Pakistan said that a missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead anywhere in Indian is ready for wartime use after troops launched it on Monday during a field exercise.

Scientists and engineers had prepared the Hatf VI missile, also known as Shaheen II, for the exercise with a test-firing on Saturday.

Monday's launch "validated the operational readiness of a strategic missile group equipped with the Shaheen II missile," the Pakistani military said in a statement.

The army says the missile has a range of about 1,200 miles, the longest of several missiles in Pakistan's nuclear-capable arsenal. That is far enough to hit targets anywhere in archrival India, as well as in Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Navy Chief Adm. Muhammad Afzal Tahir congratulated those responsible for the exercise on the "successful launch and the accuracy of the missile at the target," the statement said.

Tahir said Pakistan could be proud of the "reliability of its nuclear deterrence" and that the country would further enhance its nuclear capability.

Pakistan became a declared nuclear power in 1998 by conducting nuclear tests in response to those carried out by India.

The South Asian neighbors have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

However, their relations have improved since 2004, when they began a peace process aimed at resolving their core dispute over the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir, which both claim.

Both countries routinely test missiles.

Nah not really.

Ever heard of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s or sectarian violence between shia and sunni?
