Pakistan not to accept extension in U.S. strikes: FM - People's Daily Online 20:35, December 22, 2009
Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Tuesday that Pakistan would neither accept foreign boots on its soil nor extension of U.S. drone attacks, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Speaking at the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Qureshi underlined that Pakistan strongly believed that the U.S. drone attacks were counterproductive and unhelpful in joint efforts towards winning hearts and minds which was essential to succeed against violent extremism.
The foreign minister in his detailed briefing covered the whole range of issues related to Afghanistan, including the planned military surge, increased emphasis on effective government, political reconciliation and the importance of Pakistan-U.S. partnership towards promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Qureshi said that there were serious implications of the new U.S. Afghanistan Strategy for Pakistan.
As a result of the military surge, there could be more violence in Afghanistan which could, in turn, result in further influx of militants and refugees from Afghanistan into Pakistan.
Accordingly, Pakistan and the U.S. were engaged in consultation at different levels to coordinate more effectively military operations as well as to enhance border controls.
He also mentioned that the growing nexus between terrorism and drugs money was another serious issue needed to be dealt with in Afghanistan urgently, a foreign ministry statement said.
The foreign minister stressed that for the first time the nation was united against terrorism and militancy and Pakistan was resolved to take the ongoing fight to its logical end.
