Pakistan needs to ban forced conversions of non-Muslims : advocacy group tells U.S Congress

WASHINGTON-

Pakistan needs to overhaul laws to ban forced conversions which are leading to rape or other abuse against hundreds of non-Muslim girls each year, an advocacy group said Wednesday.

The Movement for Solidarity and Peace, which campaigns against religious violence in Pakistan, said that forced conversions generally involve the abductions of girls or young women who are then converted to Islam and married.

The girls are often raped or beaten and, when the family complains to police, the abductor responds that the girl has willingly converted, the group said in a report.

While exact figures are unverifiable, an estimated 100 to 700 Christian girls and at least 300 Hindu girls undergo such conversions in the overwhelmingly Muslim nation each year, the group said.

“These trends threaten religious freedom and public safety for all people in Pakistan,” the group´s director of advocacy, Amber Jamil, told a briefing at the US Congress.

The group called for Pakistan´s judiciary to provide a legal definition for forced conversions in the penal code.

While abductors would violate multiple laws, Pakistan generally considers non-Muslim marriages invalid if one spouse later converts to Islam, the study said.

The group also called for more funding for the government to enforce laws and for a study to look more closely at the frequency of forced conversions across Pakistan.

Good stuf.

There is no compulsion in religion and these retards should be prosecued..such morons should be killed for forcing ..

However I disagree with the last bit...
Pakistan generally considers non-Muslim marriages invalid if one spouse later converts to Islam, the study said.
I know numerous people who have married Christian women without converting them or who converted later.....Hence, I am skeptical about this study..Hope it is not hearsay or skewed so that the voice is reached....

However, I agree with the rest!

That is a total oxymoron.

How can you force some one to convert and believe in something they don't want to believe in.

I don't think US is going to buy into this crap.

The US missionaries will make sure they don't.

If Pakistan wants to advance further then it needs to stop the harassment and murder of minorities. Pakistan's leadership needs to outline a clear policy against terrorism and minority rights.

The Movement for Solidarity and Peace sounds like a Christian missionary(probably western funded) organization. I don't think any American group is going to mind it one bit.

Movement for Solidarity and Peace in Pakistan Issues Global Appeal to End Forced Marriages & Conversions of Christian Girls and Women in Pakistan

(Washington, DC) – Movement for Solidarity and Peace in Pakistan (MSP) is issuing an appeal for action by releasing an investigative report detailing forced marriages and conversions of Christian girls and women in Pakistan. [The Christian community in Pakistan is over 2 million in size, accounts for 42 percent of Pakistan’s minority population, and is mostly resident in the Punjab.]

The prevalence of forced conversion and marriage are difficult to accurately estimate due to reporting deficiencies and the complex nature of the crime. Estimates therefore range from 100 to 700 victim Christian girls every year (conservative estimates for Hindu girls are on the order of 300 per year).

MSP’s investigations find that cases of forced marriages/conversions follow a distinctive pattern: Christian girls — usually between the ages of 12 and 25 — are abducted, converted to Islam, and married to the abductor or third party. The victim’s family usually files a First Information Report (FIR) for abduction or rape with the local police station. The abductor, on behalf of the victim girl, files a counter FIR, accusing the Christian family of harassing the willfully converted and married girl, and for conspiring to convert the girl back to Christianity. Upon production in the courts or before the magistrate, the victim girl is asked to testify whether she converted and married of her own free will or if she was abducted. (In most cases, the girl remains in custody of the abductor while judicial proceedings are carried out). Upon the girl’s pronouncement that she willfully converted and consented to the marriage, the case is settled without relief for the family. Once in the custody of the abductor, the victim girl may be subjected to sexual violence, rape, forced prostitution, human trafficking and sale, or other domestic abuse.

These patterns of violence and miscarriages of justice are explored in the report through an examination of 10 illustrative cases.

The report also describes the historical and social context of the problem, and the particular grievances of Pakistan’s Christian community in relation to the existing legal, political, and procedural guarantees for the protection of human rights of Pakistan’s religious minorities. The report also highlights the patterns of violence through which the law and social attitudes become complicit in providing immunity for perpetrators, and the complex nature of associated crimes that make it difficult to categorize this crime as specific to religious identity. The report concludes with detailed recommendations at various levels— national, provincial, and local — for key stakeholders.

MSP is mobilizing an inclusive coalition to raise awareness on this issue. MSP will host outreach events in the coming weeks in Pakistan (in collaboration with the National Commission of Justice and Peace in Pakistan) and around the world.

The current investigative effort by MSP follows its 2012 release of “Shia Hazara of Pakistan: A Community Under Siege", an in-depth report revealing abuse of religious minorities in Pakistan’s eastern province of Balochistan.

Concerned individuals can view and download the report and take action at www.msp-pk.org, Movement for Peace and Solidarity in Pakistan’s website.

I have never heard of any...however media claims otherwise so I gave them the benefit of the doubt since we do have some dirty laundry...

first of there is none , if there are some than its obviously not representing Pakistan or islam

LA IKRAHA FI-D-DEEN" . (Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 256)
Meaning: There is no compulsion in Religion (Islam)

The meaning of this is that there is no concept of forced conversion in islam. If anyone believe otherwise, the person is clearly disregarding Quran.

Having said this, this all issue is raised by so called NGOs. About 2 years ago some hindu girls from Sindh love married muslim men and converted to islam. Their parents with the support of these NGOs went to courts. The cases went on even to High courts. The girls were given every opportunity to testify that have they been forced to convert and marriage? Even the Judge take them to his Chamber to ask personally if they have any pressure on them to testify other wise?

But every time the girls testimony was that they have converted and married with their own will and no pressure what so ever is on them.

Now lets say a person is alleged to be converted to other religion, who will the judge ask to tell that if its true?
Off course that man himself. Can anyone else testify for him there?

So please spare us from this bullshit. Thanks

I must convert someone to Islam. Yo you, Yes you Hindu come here So I can convert you.

Man this is very forceful conversion

See how on the basis of self estimates, an NGO has been able to approach US Congress. This is how money is generated. A perfect business plan.

End Forced Marriages & Conversions of Christian Girls and Women in Pakistan
So it is a missionary group...
