COMMISSIONING CEREMONY OF ADVANCED FRIGATES FOR PAKISTAN NAVY HELD AT CHINA

In an impressive ceremony held at Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard Shanghai, China; two newly built Type 054 A/P Frigates namely PNS TIPPU SULTAN and PNS SHAHJAHAN were commissioned in Pakistan Navy.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi graced the ceremony as Chief Guest and handed over the traditional Command Scrolls to the Commanding Officers of PN Ships.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief of the Naval Staff highlighted that commissioning of PNS TIPPU SULTAN and PNS SHAHJAHAN ushers a new chapter in Pak – China friendship that has matured and rests firmly on the pillars of trust, respect and mutual support. The same is manifested in our defence collaborations.

Naval Chief added that with the active support of Peoples Republic of China, Pakistan Navy has undertaken substantial measures to strengthen its force structure and progressive capability enhancement.

The Chief Guest underscored that completion of Type 054 A/P Project is a major leap towards strengthening capabilities to respond to maritime threats and contribution to peace and stability in the region.

Towards the end, the Admiral thanked and praised the concerted efforts made by all major stakeholders involved in development of the ships including BOMETEC, SASTIND, PLA (N), HZ Shipyard and CSTC for timely completion of the project despite pandemic challenges. The contract for four multi-role frigates (Type 054-A/P) for Pakistan Navy was signed between Pakistan and China in 2018. The first and second ships PNS TUGHRIL and PNS TAIMUR joined PN fleet in 2022.

The development of these state-of-the-art naval units for Pakistan Navy is hinged upon modern stealth design with capability to simultaneously engage in multiple naval operations to counter maritime threats. The 4000 tons frigates are technologically advanced and highly capable platforms having enormous surface to surface, land attack, surface to air and underwater firepower coupled with extensive surveillance potential.

These ships will provide deterrence and means for averting threats in our region while contributing towards protection of Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCS). The ceremony was attended by high level Civil & Military dignitaries including Ambassador of Pakistan to China and officials of Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard.

Pakistan Navy's two Type 054A/P (Tughril Class) FFGs docked together at PN Dockyard, Karachi. Also in the dry dock is PN's 3rd AGOSTA-90B Submarine undergoing modernization.

On the cerenomy of Babur class Asfat chief said that willing to share Milden submarine project with Pakistan
I hope Turkey develops the Milden design further and develops a follow on SSN design inspired by the Milden, and only slightly bigger. Pakistan has already committed to 8 Hangor class SSKs, but SSNs would give the PN a new capability; endurance at speed. A design of the size of the Rubis SSN. At a minimum, Pakistan would probably plan to acquire at least 3 boats, ostensibly to replace the Agostas. With 4 boats, the PN could probably keep at least one boat deployed somewhere in the Indian Ocean, with at least a second transiting to a duty station, before the first returned to base.

Pakistan for its part could put land attack hypersonic cruise missiles on these attack boats for a survivable capability.

That would be the kind of program, IMHO, that could interest the PN. Politically, as a non-Chinese SSN, it would ruffle less feathers with some of Pakistan’s partners.

Can’t edit the last post, so posted a follow up post to share a video highlighting the details of the French Rubis class. A sub in the 3000 ton class, close in size to the Milden as well as the Hangor, which Pakistan is to build some in Pakistan. Pakistan and Turkey working on this project jointly should leverage Western/Turkish tech and some Chinese tech (from the Hangor Class) to create a modest SSN class. Pakistan also has familiarization with French technology via the Agosta Class and the Turks also have experience with German subs.

Modern automation technology should help lower the need for as many crew members, then the 50 years since the Rubis was built. According to the following video the Rubis was a design initially envisioned where the diesel engine was removed and a nuclear reactor put in its place.

A modern design with enough power to use a pump jet efficiently, could have the quietest signature in their respective region, and give the edge to the Turkish and Pakistani Navies. (For Pakistan a follow on design with 8-12 VLS to launch modest SLBM; in the 1500 Km range could be give it a decent second strike capability)

Something in the size (4800-5300 tons) and capabilities of the current French barracuda class would probably be the ideal design for this kind of potential joint project of Turkey and Pakistan.

Even little ole Sweden had a nuclear submarine program, so I don’t think it could be a hard thing for Turkey to pull off considering their ability to built great equipment with relatively small budgets (perhaps employing retired Russian scientists).

PNS Taimur, a powerful naval vessel, sails through the open waters with unwavering determination.

Hope to see this ship one day carry a navalized HQ-16FE (160 Km range). It would give Pakistan the breathing space to slow down surface warship procurements and focus funds on the economy or a SSN.

PN will decommission PNS Tariq, the last Amazon class frigate, by mid of this year. Ship will be handed over to UK as memorial ship. Previously HMS Ambuscade in Royal Navy, the ship is veteran of Falkland war.
The decision to handover frigate was made last year.
