WASHINGTON: The Pakistani embassy in Washington has hired the services of a leading lobbying firm, Holland & Knight, to ensure effective representation of Islamabad’s interests in the United States.

A contract was signed by embassy representatives and Tom Reynolds, a former Republican congressman from New York who represented the top lobbying firm.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi witnessed the contract signing and held discussion with Reynolds and his team members.

FM Qureshi said he was confident that Holland & Knight would be able to work efficiently with the Pakistani embassy to advance Pakistan’s interests in the US.

Reynolds thanked the foreign minister for reposing confidence in Holland & Knight and assured him of their full support in efforts to forge stronger Pakistan-US bilateral relations based on mutual respect and interests.

The lobbying team will comprise of Reynolds and other former members of congress, former senior administration officials, Capitol Hill veterans and other professional experts.

The move is being seen as a positive one for Pakistan. Despite the pressing requirements of the increasingly unique political realities of the US, the Pakistani embassy had no lobbyist in Washington DC for the past six years.

The agreement coincides with Prime Minister Imran Khan’s maiden visit to the United States since assuming office. The premier left for Washington on Saturday on the invitation of US President Donald Trump.

The premier is accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, ISI Director General Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed, Adviser on Commerce Abdul Razzak Dawood and Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari.

I remind when nawaz Shareef hired one of the top american lobbying firm.
In 2017 when panama leaks burst the back of nawaz family & international media was declaring nawaz the most corrupt leader of the world. Then he hired the lobbying service of vin Roberti global to defame Pak Army in order to divert the attention from his countless corruption. But when God decides to defame some one, no one can escape & that's what happened when ICIJ confronted with lobbying firm. He made the lobbying firm ashamed.

Surely you're joking. Look up AIPAC and what they've accomplished through lobbying alone. Do you know the status of India's lobby in Washington? All of these countries with so much money spent on lobbying are fools?

Should be treated as a expense similar to military hardware upkeep. Unfortunately US lobbying firms are now a necessity to ensure India doesnt push its anti Pakistan agendas. Not only foreign policy matters but we can gain trade concessions and access to markets to boost our exports.

The amount needed to be spent on these lobbying firms is peanuts compared to what the FO spends on visits and can be made up via the austerity measures from the cost cutting in trip expense.

i think nawaz sharif didn't keep a foreign minister because of his strife with establishment.He thought that by not keeping a FM he can somehow signal that that he runs the entire country.It was a stupid move there were news at that time the the establishment was not happy because pak was not projecting any foreign policy and army chief had to lobby for pakistan by himself
