ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani prime minister has said the country has yet to decide on the issue of restoring ground supply lines to Nato troops in Afghanistan; however, a decision would be announced as soon as talks between different ministries and officials conclude.

“We have directed the concerned ministries and departments to conclude the process as soon as possible,” Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani told reporters on Thursday after attending an event here in Islamabad.

The final decision would depend on the outcome of ongoing talks, said PM Gilani.

Moreover, the prime minister said that the invitation by Nato sent to President Asif Ali Zardari to attend the Chicago summit was an ‘unconditional’ one.

Meanwhile, in a statement also on Thursday, the Foreign Office said that a final decision on reopening the routes will be taken in the best national interest of the country.

Pakistan has engaged with United States to resolve all pending issues, said Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Ali Khan, adding that the government would abide by the recommendations of the parliament both “in letter and spirit”.

Pakistan closed its border to Nato supplies in November last year in protest over American airstrikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at the Salala checkpost near the Pak-Afghan border.

The government is likely to face domestic backlash once the supplies resume, partly because the Obama administration refused to apologise for last year’s attack and stop drone strikes in the country as demanded by Pakistan’s parliament.

Religious leaders on Thursday threatened to block the supply route if it does reopen, but it’s unclear how successful they would be.

US House approves amendment linking CSF to Nato supplies

US lawmakers in the House of Representatives debating the National Defence Authorisation Act voted 412-1 for an amendment that could block up to $650 million in proposed payments to Pakistan unless Islamabad lets coalition forces resume shipment of war supplies across its territory.

The lawmakers were debating an annual defence policy bill that seeks $642.5 billion in military spending for the 2013 fiscal year.

The moves came as lawmakers debated more than 140 amendments to the policy bill, which seeks $554 billion in base defence spending for the 2013 fiscal year beginning in October and $88.5 billion for the Afghan war and other overseas operations.

They will not move against Indians and Pakistanis will open the route..well they already have. Pakistan is in NO position whatsoever to dictate things to even Afghanistan, let alone USA.

Through arm twisting, there will be resistance. Armed, political, diplomatic. It won't be smooth sailing for America till it finally decides to ally itself with the Pakistan nation than buying off the services of Pakistan's crooks.

I hope Kayani and Gilani think like You....This pair has fooled Pakistanis more than anyone else..

yes and manmohan and sonia make Indians greatest brains on earth ? lolz man don't post if you have nothing

Guys I plan to be a major Naak main dum for all those that would betray Pakistan and sell the nation for dollars. There should never be smooth sailing for this supply route, so raise your voice against it, wherever you can. Its the minimum amount of service you can do for Pakistan.

It is all depending on the ongoing talks on Chicago Summit meeting between Zardari and Obama. It will re-open soon with worth less than $1,500 per containers fees. It is cheap, we are really cheap losing more than $3.4 billion.

WASHINGTON: According to a White House spokesperson, a formal meeting between US President Barack Obama and President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of annual Nato summit in Chicago was not likely.

President Asif Ali Zardari, will attend the summit, with a final agreement apparently close on reopening crucial US supply lines into Afghanistan, Tom Donilon, Obama's national security advisor said Thursday.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has also confirmed that President Zardari will duly represent Pakistan in Chicago summit.

To be more precise, currently no plans have been announced for a bilateral meeting between Obama and Zardari, who last met in Seoul in March to try to mend an anti-terror alliance almost fractured in November by the killing of 26 Pakistani soldiers in a US air strike.

On the contrary, President Obama will meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Chicago, as he launches a NATO summit that will mark a "critical milestone" in ending the war, a top official said.

Obama last met Karzai during a surprise trip to Kabul earlier this month when the two leaders inked a deal cementing 10 years of US aid for Afghanistan after NATO combat troops leave in 2014.

The pact allows US troops to stay behind to train Afghan forces and pursue the remnants of Al-Qaeda for 10 years after 2014.

Donilon said the Afghan war would be discussed in detailed sessions at the two-day summit starting on Sunday, which will draw the leaders of 61 countries to Obama's adopted hometown.

He confirmed that NATO would formally decide to begin shifting its mission next year, so that lead responsibility for combat would rest on newly trained Afghan forces and foreign troops would be in "train and advise mode."

The summit will also seek consensus on the structure and financing of the $4 billion annual cost of Afghan forces after 2014 when NATO combat troops are due to leave the country.

Donilon reported progress on securing offers from US partners to ensure the full cost does not fall on the United States, noting pledges of $110 million, $100 million and $195 million a year from Britain, Australia and Germany.

He added that leaders in Chicago would also discuss their presence in Afghanistan after 2014 and the shape of a small NATO forces expected to remain to offer training and advice for Afghan forces.

"Chicago is a critical milestone in the next step towards a responsible ending of this war, towards our achieving, very importantly, our goals in this effort in Afghanistan," Donilon said.

No don't support anyone for violence on Pakistan soil. But yes, we can always peacefully block the supply route. Let them resort to violence first. Let's see how many bullets America can buy off from the Pakistan government to fire on its own nation.

Here's my question. What advantage does Pakistan have to gain by continuing blocking of NATO supply routes? If anything it's alienating the US and NATO even more.

Besides, it wont be smooth sailing for anyone in the area, allied, non-allied or even local Pakistani troops in the tribelands. Given the transition thats about to take place, Pakistan would be strategically at a loss if it continues to be hostile to the NATO.

Most simple answer? Of course, how long can you bare to watch your bank account increase just by the interest?

Tactical Answer? The ban is costing Pakistan money. Even if the collection equals less than billion dollars.

Strategic Answer? With the new Afghan-Iran port agreement, Pakistan will lose some hold on Afghanistan and the Central Asian republics. Even though western Afghan is probably the most dangerous of the country, it makes since to export to Qwadar or Karachi and let the good go through Peshawar along the Eastern part of Afghanistan, Safer as a businessman/woman will tak into account the security.

The New Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India pipeline isnt going to happen without Pakistan scratching Afghan's back. Geo-Politics of Oil, Energy, Influence, and Power.

My grammar isn't always great, but I should point out that "have", not "has" would be correct.
